The Courier lost some subscribers when it was bought by the Journal Register Company, the parent company that oversees the Heritage papers of Western Wayne and Washtenaw County. Those subscribers probably felt it was less of a hometown paper, and many were probably upset by the fact that the Ypsilanti office was closed and staff was consolidated with the staff that covers Belleville. However, I think that the folks putting out the paper really are trying to do a good job. I remember the Courier under the original owners, and I think the paper looks better these days. The layout is consistently cleaner and more interesting under the new owners, and community pages are full of photos of local doings. The report is also decent to good. A July edition had lots of election coverage on the front page and inside coverage ranged from business news to stories about Eastern Michigan unive rsity to news about millage efforts.

Typically articles are reported…read morein both languages, which makes this an excellent resource if you're learning either language, a great way to contextualize your reading. The coverage is not extensive, and it's a rather short read - but I find it an invaluable text and the perfect size when sitting down for a cup of coffee in Southwest.

I look forward to every Thursday after work, when I open my mailbox to find a folded up copy of the…read moreweek's Jewish News. Not long ago, there was an offer for a free year's subscription for recent college graduates, and so I joined the legions of my kinsmen in subscribing. True to my genetics, I read from right to left, starting with obituaries and ending with an increasingly provocative editorial by the publisher, Arthur Horwitz. In between, you can read about who's celebrating marriages, births, circumcisions, 90th birthdays, anniversaries. There is a great weekly food column by Danny Raskin, who is as old as the hills. And you can get a bunch of wire stories from the Jewish Telegraph service. But I, like most people, mostly read it to find out who's doing what in the community. It's a good read, especially when it's free!

If I had to choose between FM 98 and HOT 102.7, it would be this one. I'm not sure why though,…read moreconsidering this radio station can't even keep a steady signal throughout the city. Seriously, in some parts of Detroit you can't listen to 102.7. That seems mighty strange to me. Either way, Russ Parr in the morning is pretty entertaining for the most part. His show is carried throughout various cities in the US, so it is not necessarily "Detroit" based in content. You want "interactive" Hip Hop and R&B, then this is a station you would enjoy. Although I must admit I don't understand why they call it "interactive".
