Honest mechanic…read more My car broke down in Peoria while away from home on work. Rob was the mechanic I spoke to. I towed my car to his shop and he tried to find out what the issue was. Initially, the problem was misdiagnosed... something else was also wrong with the car, he assumed that was the primary problem, unfortunately it was a red herring; that's ok, I understand how it goes. In the end Rob found out the what the true issue was. It happened to be a very expensive fix. Rob didn't pressure me; to my surprise he was totally cool when I told him I'd rather tow the car 200mi back to my own mechanic in Chicago to complete the job. He told me not to pay him for the initial fix since the initial diagnosis had been incorrect. I felt it was only right to pay Rob for the part he had installed, but honestly he would have let me out of there not giving him a dime. That's not something you see every day with a mechanic. Me; an out of town business traveler with a broken vehicle; he or any other mechanic could've taken me to the cleaners and I probably would have gone along for the ride since I was stranded 200mi from home. Rob treated me well and he struck me as the kind of guy who probably treats all of his customers just as well. If you need service in Peoria, check out Rob at Stecher's. He's an honest mechanic and a stand up guy. I don't know about you, but those are the qualities I want in a mechanic. I initially met Mike and he did a thorough exam of my car along with photos. He worked up the estimate (6,200$) and said it would take about 21 days. I couldn't get it in for a couple weeks. I dropped it off the morning of my appt. He called every few days to keep me updated on the progress. I also received texts with updates when it went from body to paint and estimated completion date. They finished up a couple days later than promised but due to the holidays (my appt drop off was Dec 21), and weather, it was understandable. Once I picked it up he took me to my car and summarized the repairs. And as a final touch, they washed the car prior to pickup.
