I have been a professional tradesperson for 50 years. I was recently hired by a client to…read morerepresent them in remedying the defective work performed by Catalyst Construction. The quality of their work, their construction knowledge and professionalism are nothing short of ABYSMAL. I contacted Ryan Klobas (the owner) with regards to his defective and delinquent work. I threated to contact the Builders Board to motivate him to show up. His response? He said that "PEOPLE ALWAYS TRY TO TAKE HIM TO THE BUILDERS BOARD, BUT IT NEVER WORKS," and then promptly contacted his attorney (who sent us a patronizing letter) instead of showing up to the job site (something he NEVER did) to remedy the situation. He bullied my female client (a mother of an infant). HE TOOK 14 MONTHS TO INSTALL 2 WINDOWS! It wasn't until I began proceedings with the CCB that Ryan finally agreed to complete (or attempt to) complete the project. I had to dry plans on his behalf (he did not seem to know how) to show him how to do a simple window installation. I specified the use of proper materials, as he had not educated himself on this common trade knowledge. I forced him to get permits and engineering for the structural damage he had done to the residence. He lied to my client, telling them that permits were "optional." HE USES A CHAINSAW AND A SLEDGEHAMMER (literally) to cut ROUGH openings into structural concrete walls. He installed his windows exactly backwards. He dug huge holes in the yard, leaving them all winter to fill up with water, which migrated into the house. He does not know how to caulk properly. He used finger-jointed (garbage) lumber, which disintegrated in 2 months time. There is not one aspect of construction, neither in the use of materials or in standard construction orthodoxy, that Ryan knows how to implement. He makes things and systems up in his head, uses materials against their intended purposes, then writes a letter telling my client that he is "innovative" by doing so, and that my client is "crazy" for suggesting otherwise. All of Ryans' employees who visited the site, refer to Ryan as "an idiot" and "a bully." One employee told me that he gotten abused by Ryan because Ryan hadn't given him the plans (which we provided) for the project. Ryan told his employee that he should "LIE TO THE CLIENT TO PROTECT THE COMPANY." Every one of his employees who attempted doing their mis-guided work on my client's house, ended up quitting, because of the way Ryan mistreated them and his clients. I am not sure where the positive reviews have come from, but I suspect they are fake. My female client was literally afraid for her safety. She experienced Ryan as DANGEROUS. DO NOT HIRE THIS GUY.

They made an oversize bid for work that did not need to be done to jack up the price, and my insurance allowed the fees, but they cut corners everywhere they could and did not do the work that was needed. I had to call them out on it so many times it became a daily review of the work to make sure it wasn't shoddy. they abandoned the job for a full month and after many attempts to reach the foreman, I called the owner to complain. They stated they were waiting on tiles, but I still didn't have walls in my kitchen and the drywall was ready to go. My kitchen floor sags and the marmoleum is cut all over in weird places. the trim is falling off. there are many patches left where they didn't paint the walls. I am constantly scraping caulking off of walls and trim where it wasn't cleaned up. there is no insulation in the outside walls. they didn't reattach doors. they just left one day. I don't speak Russian by my phone can translate and some of the workers were quite cruel about my disability and my gender identity, as well as racist towards other people. -000/10 do not recommend.

I did some research and seen the Craftsman Design and Renovation van around the neighborhood. I called and the office person was wonderful and she said the owner would call me back to discuss next steps. Well today I talked to the owner and outlined my process so far. I had mentioned I started my search at Home Depot and had an idea of cabinets and countertops. He said he was a design build firm and people come to them to design, this was said in what I felt was a dismissive tone. The conversations started to take a turn. I said "don't customers have an idea of colors?". He then went to tell me that his company does remodels in the ballpark of 50K. He never asked me the size of my home or my budget. I guess my money is not good enough. I can only imagine the communication on a project if this is how the first impression went. UPDATE: the owner of Craftsman Design and Build got wind of this post and called to make this right. He did sincerely apologize. He called because he wanted this post down/revised. I understand that a bad review here can be hurtful to a business. I use reviews here to learn and choose where to spend my $. I am updating my rating a smidge because he did reach out to me. He was very slow and ran us way over budget (he essentially billed us 89.00 per hour to put in tile, and he seriously billed us for 48 hours of tile work to put in 45 pieces of 12x24 tile). When we would ask for estimates to finish, he gave an estimate, and then took twice as long as his estimate. When we confronted him, he literally said, it's time and materials, it is what it is. We finally had him stop work when he was close to 50% over our original estimate (and he STILL wasn't finished). The final quality of work was so bad, we had to hire a new contractor and have all the tile torn out and start over. Be careful!
