There are a couple of listings for this shop so make sure to go to 357 Navajo Blvd. When we arrived the shop was closed but a note on the door instructed 'potential customers' to call. The owner Leo arrived in 5 minutes as promised and greeted us warmly. Inside there are three jewelry cases filled to the brim with copper, silver, and turquoise jewelry. You can find Hopi, Navajo, and Zuni handmade jewelry, ceramics, and textile pieces at Nakai's. This was the only trading post we stopped in Holbrook and is certainly worth a visit. Leo is knowledgeable about his trade and was happy to explain the differences in turquoise to me, producing the map you can see in my photos. He was patient in helping me select a pair of earrings and checking out rings in my size. Be sure to visit Nakai's and it's reasonably priced wares.

The dinosaurs are huge but then so are the piles upon piles of petrified wood and other rocks surrounding the building. I believe my husband was grateful they were closed, he seemed to relax a bit more as we strolled around the perimeter!! I definitely would have loved to get my hands on some of the fine specimens they had just laying in the dirt! Everywhere we looked it said they were open the afternoon we drove through town but unfortunately it was all locked up and no sign of anybody around. Since we found it on Roadside Attractions, we treated it as such and just enjoyed the unique dinosaurs and a chance to stretch our legs! There's something incredibly awesome about a perfect stranger trying to get you to invest in meteorites. Not to buy a meteorite, mind you. But to INVEST in meteorites. Try as I might, I struggle with the image of a prudent businessman, venturing out on I-40, driving past Holbrook, past the dozens of hand-painted signs advertising STEWART'S PETRIFIED WOOD SHOP!, up the gravel road past the pens teeming with ostriches, and up to the storefront, where he wisely exchanges legal tender for a hunk of space debris. Who knows. Maybe it happens. But as for me, I wasn't swayed. I did, however, learn a lot about meteorites and petrified wood. I even got my much-touted FREE PETRIFIED WOOD that was advertised on the many billboards I'd seen along the way (the piece was about the size of a dime, in case you're interested). As for my rating, I really have no choice but to give this place five stars. The thing that's so cool about Route 66 is the simple fact that places like Stewart's Petrified Wood Shop exist there. I can't think of any other major highway in the country where a combination ostrich farm, petrified wood and meteorite shop, and paper mache dinosaur emporium could exist, let alone thrive. If you find yourself heading down I-40, don't hesitate to stop and take a gander. But beware the ostriches. They bite.
