Eventually after standing at the counter for an extended amount of time, a fat guy in the corner finished eating and asked us what we wanted. I told him I needed Mauser ammo, He said "What ammo?" I said "Mauser", he replied that he doesn't know what I'm saying, I'm a little perplexed at this point as I am a native English speaker though I do have a foreign accent, I explain "German Mauser, K98 etc..." He said to me in the most obnoxious way possible "In America we pronounce it Mauser" (The "You say tomato, I say tomato" thing). I was stunned, as was my friend (from the same country of birth as me). We left and as we discussed it both became more and more angry at that xenophobic, surly, a-hole and his disgusting attitude. Since then I have served in the US Army for over 10 years, and have purchased many firearms and ammo in Long Island gun stores. I have NEVER set foot in Benson's since that day!

Matt and Jamie are running something truly special for firearms enthusiasts of all levels. Every shelf and case is full of anything you can imagine from entry level to Call of Duty level prestige. Jamie and two of her team members (I feel terrible I didn't get their names) spent time listening to what I was looking for and then gave me their insight and helped me narrow down my choices. Jamie even showed me one of my options from her personal collection and explained that they offer demo rentals on their range. In the end I purchased something I couldn't find anywhere else on the island. Matt (Jamie's husband) came over and introduced himself and thanked me for coming in. He explained some of the amenities and offerings at Guardian should I want to take advantage of those. I will absolutely be back to dive further into those. Spark notes: Even as a first time visitor, the team at Guardian treated me as a lifelong customer and friend. When I first walked in nobody knew whether I was a window shopper or serious buyer. Our most recent visit was for a new set of skis, boots, and poles for my wife. Admittedly we were lured in by the Black Friday deals, and despite the store being a little bit crowded, Jonathan was extremely patient and helpful throughout the entire experience. We were on the fence between seasonal rentals, rent to own, or just outright purchasing, and Jonathan explain the math and available equipment for all the scenarios. We started off with an advanced boot fitting, complete with a 3-D foot scan, and then Jonathan whisked out a few different boot options (one for each foot) asking my wife to walk around in them for 5-10 mins each. After going through the exercise a few terms, she zeroed in on a nice pair of Nordicas. From there, we went to the skis, and they were running a great deal on brand new equipment from last season, so we bagged 40% off for Blizzard skis paired with Marker bindings, then grabbed a set of Leki poles to complete the set. Their prices are competitive to begin with, but they do price match in the off chance you find something cheaper that's in stock (same size, year, etc) elsewhere. From start to finish, it was a great experience, and we both learned a lot through all of it...Even got some great tips for layering so don't be surprised if we're back in a week or two for some new base layers! PS, and just as a heads up, they charge you a $50 fee upfront for the advanced boot fitting they do (3D foot scans, etc) but that is applied towards any boot purchase, or if you decide not to get boots, you can still walk away with a $50 gift card to the store to use towards something else, so no matter what, there's no loss. I presume they do that so people don't come in, spend a couple hours of an associate's time, and then not purchase anything, and it makes perfect sense.
