This is a gratitude and a strong recommendation. The kind folks here cared for our kitty She-Ra (and for us) for as long as we had her. Twelve years ago, as a severely underweight 2-year-old, she ran away from a meth house that was breeding her to sell her kittens (crazy story), finding us several miles away at the Yardarm after crossing Kent-Des Moines Road. (The burgers they grilled there obviously smelled really good!) She moved in with us and we took her to Dr. Onorati after we'd been to another vet that we didn't get a great vibe from. As we left with her that first time, Dr. Onorati thanked us for taking such good care of her. The kindnesses continued over time as we brought her back many times for regular care and emergencies - when she pulled a thigh muscle chasing a cat out of her yard like the bad-ass she was, when she cut herself on the sharp barbs of a fence she hopped over, when she got folded into the automated machinery as we lowered a garage door we didn't realize she was lying on top of, and more. She was 8 pounds of sass and awesomeness. Last month she developed a massive infection that did not respond to intensive treatment, and we ultimately made the decision to help her say good-bye. The doctors, the assistants, the technicians, and the front desk folks were all just incredibly kind to her and to us as we navigated the past month and the end. We are so grateful to each of them. As I spent lots of time there, I had the opportunity to witness the attention and care all the animals (and their people) coming in and out received. When our next kitty finds us, we'll be back again. Sending healing love from our too-quiet home to all of you and your sweet furry ones out there. read more

Since they have changed hands they are awful, I lost my dog last week because of this. They don't give good instructions or care. I found a new vet and will never go back and will tell anyone who looks for care to not go there. They have tarnished what Dr Conger and Onorati built in a very short time. It's sad to see how bad this place got after Dr. Onorati retired and others doctors left. I'm sadden to see that most of the old staff left while the remaining familiar long term staff that care for my boarding animals and their vet care, look overwhelmed and overworked. The company is charging higher and higher, being quoted almost over $1300 for a dental is ridiculous! Pushing for $350 dental xrays and blood work as well with heart worm test sounds like they are trying to make up all the money they are losing! It's sad to see how fast the clinic went downhill. A year later and I'm still happy choosing this vet for my pups knees. I brought her last year and she had to have her right knee surgery this year she had to have her left knee done and they went in to make a couple adjustments for the right knee. As stated, they guarantee their work so they had to fix her right knee (no charge to fix it) so it essentially turned into a double knee surgery which was not planned. But they've done a phenomenal job when it comes to surgeries and communication and what to expect and all of that. I will say it was much better knowing that my dog was going to be staying there for a couple of days prior to the surgery because then mentally I was able to prepare that she was going to be there. My dog is terrified of vets and when she went in there for her post op appointment she got extremely excited to see one of the girls and I did not get her name (she's the one with the tattoo that says breathe on her chest.) all of their staff is wonderful but the fact that my dog got excited to see somebody in that setting just showed me the love and care that this clinic gives to all of their animals. There is one thing that I would like to address and maybe give a heads up to other people who generally aren't going to use these guys as their normal day-to-day vet. (I would if I didn't live in Tacoma) When I went in they said that she was "due for shots" and then asked if I wanted them to just give them to her and I said yes thinking that they looked at her actual medical records from my normal vet. That was not the case and she ended up getting a couple of shots that she was not due for or that I had opted out for w my vet. But over all, we are one happy family down here and once she is healed and I see her running free as the wind w her sister it will all be worth every minute and ever penny. The doctors are great at explaining after-care instructions as well. During the pandemic, the lobby was closed, but the lobby is now open in 2023. They had to reduce their hours due to lack of staffing: they are now open Monday through Friday but not weekends. Have been going to DMVH for 24 years. That's been with 3 golden retrievers and 2 cats. Never have thought about leaving, but when we took our female GR in for her boosters, and she was shaking so hard that they could not even take her to a room or in the back. We noticed when we walked in the whole atmosphere had changed and with our little girl so upset we decided we were going to be leaving and looking for a new vet. Avoid this place. All the vets (Liz and Onorati) retired. I had an appointment last week; we showed up and they REFUSED to treat my cat - turned us away! (It's a lot of work getting him into kennel as is plus, he was in pain). They didn't care. They said he had to be sedated in order to treat an ear infection. We have dealt with his ear infections for years. Just needed antibiotics and ear meds. They apparently want to hold him all day, charge extra to keep and sedate him. All she had to do was an exam while we held the cat, and she refused. Last time he was sedated they had trouble waking him up. Had she reviewed his records she would have known. And asked us the last time he was in the office. Didn't review his records, he is there nearly every year, has been going there for 15 years, we've spent a small fortune there and this rude vet told me she doesn't care if I write a bad review - told us to leave. Worst service I have ever received, or lack of service. This place is terrible and charges a fortune. DO NOT RECOMMEND. Found a vet the same day willing to do an ear exam and provide all the meds needed to resolve for HALF the price I have been paying at this place. read more

I went to DES MOINES's vet for30 years The vet that I went to there was Dr. Jim he is a excellent veterinarian I called to get appointment for my Congo African grey parrot they told me he was out of town until March. That was a January with no buddy to refer me too. Then I called again and they said that he had retired in December. I felt very hurt at the fact. that I have such respect for him and nobody even told me he was retiring they insist they said they left an email. I have several clients and said they never got an email and they go to him also I don't think that's a way for a new business to start out with their patience by not contacting them with the letter, not a email and letting them know that somebody you love and respected and that you pets trusted and you trusted their animals to was gone. I had to bring my 14 year old baby here yesterday. My pup was a worn out soldier, with a horrible skin condition. She limped in, clearly uncomfortable and in pain. The vet gave me options, but those options just weren't in the wallet for me. Trust me, I would have given anything to fix my baby. The ultimate decision had been made, and I have never been a witness to putting an animal to sleep. I was able to lay on the floor with my Roxy girl, and hold her until her last breath. I cried like a baby, and knew it was the best for her at that very moment. The staff and vet were in the room with me, and showed total compassion. Of course I awoke today with the empty heart, and feelings of guilt. But, I sincerely appreciate the compassion shown for my baby. I rushed my pup JJ to DMVH from grandview dog park when he was experiencing a sudden and severe breathing problem. He couldn't breathe and had collapsed in the park. The team took him in and got work. Saved his life! After some shots and O2 therapy he was able to go home in about 3-4 hours. Very thankful to this hospital for saving JJs life. read more

I can't say enough kind things about Dr Conger, Dr Onorati and staff . Where do I start . Well unfortunately I lost my mom and dad bunny . I was left with 5 orphans. I knew this would be a hard battle . But the staff at Des Moines were with me every step of the way. Sometime I had to call to ask Dr Conger questions 3 times a day . One day when Dr Conger wasn't in Dr Onorati baby sat my baby to make sure he would make it. Because of them I have my Batstache . He is alive and very happy. They also helped my tortoise get better . Dr. Conger has been beyond amazing with my herd of pit bulls, and our bearded dragon. We found out about her through a rescue we fostered for, and all of our foster dogs have been seen by Dr. Conger. The prices are completely reasonable, my annual checkup bill for 2 seniors who get the full ride (blood work, etc.) and a puppy is so much lower than it could be! My 3 dogs have wildly different temperaments and they are amazing with all of them. My puppy spent a few weeks with them recovering from the worst case of kennel cough pneumonia, and they never gave up on him, and he is a beautiful, healthy 2 year old today. He gets nervous, but they are so gentle and sweet with him. My middle dog has had an aural hematoma in each ear, 1 year apart. The first time we took her to an emergency vet, and it cost us $1500, 4 vet visits, and a lot of stress, since they "forgot" to finish the surgery the way they said they would, by sewing her ear flap to the top of her head, so she couldn't re-injure. It got itchy as it healed, and she had to go back to have all the stitches from the original surgery removed, and new one to hold her ear up. Dr. Conger handled the other ear for us, almost exactly one year later. She did a different style of surgery, and it healed perfectly, the first time. That ear is softer and she was much more comfortable as well...and it cost $400, and Dr. Conger removed all of her bumps at the same time, and we only have to pay lab fees on the ones she can't immediately ID as benign. She always answers all of my questions, and if I think of something later, they always have her call. The clinic is crazy busy, and the wait times get a little nuts, but that is because the Dr.s take emergencies as they come in. They let us keep our crew in the car until they are ready, which really helps reduce anxiety & stress, since they don't have to try and behave while exotic pets like ducks & squirrels wait for a vet! (I have seen both...) read more

This place is great. Staff is friendly, and Dr. Onorati is wonderful with my 2 dogs. Plus they are open late enough I can go home after work to pick up the dogs. When it comes to care, I wouldn't take them anywhere else. However, I'm not a big fan of boarding there. No pick up on Sundays and my dogs are not happy with me for a few days. I've found other kennels that they dogs seem much happier in when we travel. read more

Love Dr. Conger! She has been helping our 9 yr old dog get her toe fixed after an incident with another (terrible) vet caused all kinds of issues. She has been extremely supportive and helpful in trying to get the toe healed properly. She is the ONLY vet my dog has ever not been completely afraid of and that says alot. Her staff has always been very helpful. The office is always super busy which I don't mind b/c it just goes to show that everyone likes them and are obviously popular. But they are always willing to get you in last minute for urgent issues. Love them! read more

I miss Dr. Conger. She was extremely knowledgeable, patient, had excellent bedside manner and would always call me with a verbal update on my pet. I always got the feeling that she cared as much about my fur babies as I did. Once she left the practice (medical issues) I stuck with Dr. Onerati and the new vet for about a year. What I learned is that this has basically become a "turn & burn" type of outfit now; always overbooked, the best you'll get is a drop-off appointment for most everything. It is very difficult to get a face-to-face with Onerati and don't expect a follow-up phone call. A vet receptionist will tell you what is up with your pet, and I'm sorry, that's not what I'm paying for. When my cat had another eye ulcer (which Conger had previously treated with eye drops - staying in contact with the eye specialIst), the other two vets at DMVH said that my cat needed eye surgery and to take him to the eye specialist. $300+ later, the eye clinic gave me eye drops for the eventual sequestrum and said that his ulcer had already healed. The final straw was them hospitalizing my very sick rabbit over one weekend (cost $1000+). I walked away with no conversation from the doctor, no diagnosis, and nothing about treatment or prevention. A month later (unable to spend another $1000) I treated at home and my rabbit died. I've switched vets now and get the face time and caring that my pets and I deserve. Do not take your pets here. I can't imagine taking our animals anywhere else! Dr. Onorati is the most compassionate vet I have ever met. He is WONDERFUL with both animals and humans! We recently had to make the tough decision and have our American Eskimo put down. Dr. Onorati was so patient with my entire family. He took so much time and I never felt rushed or pushed into making a decision. When the time came to euthanize he was so sweet and gentle with our dog and she passed away in such a peaceful way. The front waiting area is not at all fancy, in fact it is pretty small and sometimes smells like animals.... go figure =) With that being said, I would never trade the loving care that we receive for a decked out fancy office! read more

Just had my 2nd miss diagnosis with my cat from this place. Swore he did not have cancer cuz none of the pallets for cancer showed in the bloodwork. Cat had a unknown infection. Conger wanted to do an exploratory surgery on 15year old cat and said she may put it down during surgery if she found anything bad. After about 3months of having him on antibiotics and no probiotics gave him upset stomach that they did nothing for beside prescription diet food For kidneys. I called for quality of life and what to look for. Took 5 days to get a return phone call and I even stopped in the office and they did not have time to talk to me about it. After 5 days It only seems to be because they got a record request from a new vet we decide to go get a 2nd opinion and Conger even told me good chance I would not be able to be in the room when they put him down. Des Moines vet has no bed side maner are very clinically by the book. I asked several questions and got the same reply " the bloodwork does now point to that. " and " bloodwork would look different if it was dental " The new vet found the cancer in about 1min with a physical exam. The new vet had so much more compassion. The Des Moines vet has not called or check on us after they got record request and they where our cats vet for 15 years. After he passed I went back to Des Moines vet to return his prescription food and they never even asked about him or how he was doing. Also they did not ask if they could clip his claws, they clipped all claws on both front so short they had to use the blood clotting stuff on EVERY claw!! The outcome would not have changed but I wish we had switched vets sooner so he would at least had compassion instead of clinical treatment for the last few months of his life. read more
