Our golden-lab mix, Olive, has been a member of Tanya and Eric's pack since November 2020. She's a shy and anxious dog, but absolutely loves and trusts Tanya and Eric, and always runs out to greet them when they arrive to pick her up. She has a blast with the pack and has gained so much more confidence riding in the car and playing with other dogs. So much so that we've even upped Olive's pack walks to "double days" twice a week to give her more time with the group. Tanya and Eric take their groups out on actual hikes in nature rather than just dog parks. They're also deep experts in dog training to keep the pack safe and in control while still getting plenty of fun and exercise. Tanya is even a regular Search & Rescue volunteer, which is a true testament to her commitment to training. When we first reached out to Derby Dogs, we were really struggling with recall for our young dog and couldn't let her off leash as a result (despite having worked with multiple trainers). Tanya and Eric worked with us to train our dog on recall so that she could work towards joining the pack off leash, and were successful when other trainers' methods weren't. We really appreciated their style and philosophy towards training. Because of their help, we are now able to trust our dog off leash and she is now a full time pack member. I feel lucky to have Derby Dogs help take care of my dog. I trust them entirely. They're super responsible, communicative and friendly. From the first time I met Tanya, it was obvious that they are great trainers and genuinely care about the dogs in their pack. Tanya contacted me regarding the missed e-mail/calls. She stated that she was on vacation and wasn't able to respond. She then proceeds to blame me for not trying again to contact them and just giving them a 1 star rating. To be clear... Their website didn't not state they were away. There was no automated response from their e-mail that stated they were on vacation. Also, their voicemail for their business didn't indicate anything either. So of course I thought that they just didn't response. I cannot recommend this business due to my interactions with Tanya. I do not believe that this business owner handled this situation well. I would of just said "I'm sorry we were unable to get back to you sooner. We were on vacation. Are you still interested in our services?" That would of be just fine! And I would of changed my rating. Tanya and Eric have changed our dog's life. We moved from San Francisco to Berkeley earlier this year, and were worried about finding a new walker for our pit mix Charlie - she's is a rescue and can be a bit distrustful of people, new dogs, etc. We found Derby Dogs via Yelp and are so glad we did. Tanya has been a natural with Charlie, and within days of joining her Derby Dog's pack we saw Charlie with more confidence in herself and around others. She has become happier, more curious and energetic on our own walks, with vastly improved recall and comfort with new dogs. Charlie goes on the AM pack walks five days a week, and as an early pick up, is gone for 2-3+ hours. When we come home from work late in the evening, Charlie is no longer frantic and manic from her time alone-- she is instead relaxed and content after her daily adventures with her crew. It's hard to add much to these glowing reviews, but I will try. First off, Derby Dogs is FABULOUS!!!!! Everything outlined here is true. My story is somewhat different, though, and I want to tell it because I think it reflects on the kind of business that Tanya and Eric run - and the kind of people they are. Last year I determined that I wanted to adopt a dog. I have put this off for years, waiting for a time that I felt settled enough to take on the responsibility. But, it was something that I had wanted for a very, very long time. I have a love for Labs and having made the decision to adopt, that's what I wanted. I also wanted a rescue dog. When I submitted to the first organization, I was crushed to be denied - almost immediately. It seems that the fact I worked away from the home, and would leave the dog alone for periods of time, was a disqualifier, despite the fact that I could provide a safe, loving and abundant environment. On my application I had stated that I would absolutely hire a dog-walker, and listed that as a priority. (I also said would eventually take the dog to my place of business, since I own and operate my own company - but, I would only do that after the adopted dog was fully trained.) These points didn't seem to matter to this organization, and I admit to being a bit angry, so I determined the best thing to do was to find the best dog walker possible, prior to submitting any more applications. I researched and talked to lots of folks - but Tanya and Eric were the obvious choices. And, here's what I want to say about their service: they run an exceptional business that corresponds with my own business values. Here's what happened. Tanya took up my cause like a crusader, immediately linking me with multiple rescue organizations and contacts in that community, including her own favorite rescue organization. (She almost seemed more offended than I was by the denial.) She offered constant advice on possible 'picks' that I met, and held my hand through a daunting and challenging process. She offered guidance for training, feeding, vet care and what seemed like hundreds of other issues, sometimes answering my lengthy emails late in the night. And, she did this all without the promise of pay - without a dog to walk, without being retained. She did it because she believed in me and my family, believed that all dogs can find a good home and believed in rescue. And, this went on for a long time - nearly two months. I was about to give up, just because the search was exhausting, and I thought I should take a break, and resume my search in the spring. But, then I met Lucky, my new best friend in the whole world. Lucky is lucky indeed. He's got a great home, a best friend, and has become a 'full member of the pack'. You can check out his photos on the site - and you can see how freakin' happy he is to be hanging out with his buddies, and his pack leaders - Tanya and Eric. One final note - coming home from work has never been such fun. Reading the reports from Eric and Tanya, particularly in the early days when Lucky was still learning the ropes (and, admittedly, having a few behavior challenges, because of past neglect by prior owners who abandoned him), is like getting report cards from school. When Lucky had a great 'recall' day - we celebrated that night. And, when Lucky 'graduated' to full pack member - it was a great day for our family. Tanya and Eric provide more than just a service - they provide love and structure to new pets, and an ongoing source of advice and counsel for engaged pet-owners. I just can't thank them enough for their help. And, I so much appreciate their patience as they guided me through this process. I'd like to address the 1 star review Derby Dogs received because ironically, my husband ran into the pack today when he was taking our dog out of for a hike. (He had the day off, which is the only reason we weren't using Derby Dogs.) Today, as well as other days that we've walked with the pack everything was 100% professional. Yes, Derby Dogs uses long lines to train and help recall some dogs who may have trouble being totally off leash, but this is something that is safe and effective, not a sign of being out of control. The dogs are being DOGS - running around, having fun, playing with each other - which is what you want your dog to do on a walk. If my dog were to march around on leash without any interaction with the other dogs and no play time it would do nothing to wear her out. I'm glad we can always depend on Derby Dogs to provide her with a safe, stimulating, and fun outing! read more

This is where you want your dog to be when they're not with you. No joke. They come back tired, and socialize better with other dogs. Thats big when your dog is high energy and you work too much :/ . Derby pays attention to the dogs, and it shows- ours has been doing much better at recall since. On top of that, they are easy to get a hold of via text/email, which is great. Derby Dogs is awesome, they take really good care of your dog, and they are very helpful, even working with our dog on specific training and helping us to learn about our dogs behavior. They let us know when anything is out of the ordinary with our dog, and watch over her attentively. They have helped her to stop charging, something which we couldn't seem to get our dog to stop doing. All of which they have taken on without any sort of request from us. We have boarded our dog with Tanya and Eric twice, for a total of about 14 days, and will be happy to do so again the next time we are out of town! I had interacted with Tanya in her role as a volunteer assistant in Albany's Recreational Agility class. I liked her because she is open, friendly, and genuine, "reads" dogs very well, and helped my dog ENJOY learning the obstacles. Before each boarding, I joined a "pack walk." Tanya and Eric are able to keep track of individual dogs' responses to recall, food allergies, etc. It was fun and my dog enjoyed it. At one point, we recalled the dogs, and my dog followed the pack to Tanya, going right past me! They supplied updates of our dog's progress via text messaging, email, and photos. When we ran into an emergency, Tanya and Eric were both very accommodating. Mostly, though, our dog had a great time playing and making friends. read more

We adopted our dog, Helix, earlier this year from a rescue and have been with Derby Dogs for over 6 months now. And we love it; we love them and so does Helix. He is a high energy dog and definitely needs the walks. Tanya, Eric and Jake take them out to all sort of places and leave notes about where they've been and how the walk went. They also take photos pretty regularly and they are really great shots. As it always does at first, Helix had some training issues with recall; but they worked with him and trained him and he improved for them and for us. They pay attention to your dog. Helix had an eye infection, we had started him on drops but it hadn't gone away quite yet before his next walk. I appreciated that they made note of his guppy eyes; one more person looking after him, all the help you can get, right? We've also had Helix board with them over a long weekend. He came back so much calmer than if we had put him at a doggie day care center. Being able to stay with familiar people and familiar dogs really benefited him. We just boarded our dog Ella with Tanya and Eric over the x-mas holiday. Before then, we went on two wonderful walks with the whole pack to ensure that Ella got along well with the other dogs. I have full confidence in both Tanya and Eric when it comes to taking care of our dogs. And, Tanya and Eric are both really nice people. Tanya and Eric are dog lovers and enthusiasts and consistently go above and beyond the call of duty to provide the best care for our dogs. Examples: They consistently work with one of our dogs on the daily walks to improve her recall skills. They provide updates on our dog's behavior and let us know if there is any changes in health or attitude. They fill the dogs' water dish if it is running low upon return from the walk. We have been using Derby Dogs for our new GS rescue for a little over a month and they are the best! I have used dog walkers elsewhere before and got NOTHING close to the service we've gotten from DD- and they are an amazing value Our dog Ghost LOVES his pack walks, and the walkers leave us tips and reports about his progress everyday. Thankfully, he is beat after his walks and is a much more peaceful pup in the evenings because of it! They help with training info as well which is much appreciated, as this "puppy" is quite a handful. It is also great to have him socialize with other pups while on the walks. Dinga and Wiley (aka, the "girls") joined the Derby Dogs pack for an extended two week boarding after meeting with Tanya and Eric and their super well-behaved, mellow and joyful pack. Tanya and Eric are in control and exude calm and confidence. They also clearly love what they do. Even on our first walk together, our dogs found their place in the pack, and we knew right away that this would be the best possible, safest and most nurturing situation for them. After a few more walks, Dinga and Wiley stayed with Tanya and Eric for two weeks and I cannot say enough about their level of care, patience, and professionalism! They went above and beyond to help our dogs settle; their generosity and dedication are just outstanding. They even took the time to work with Wiley, the aptly named, who is now crate trained! Yup. They did that. We came back to two very happy, healthy doggies who look forward to their bi-weekly walks with their new pack. These guys are spectacular. I adopted a shepherd-rott mix just before I started a new job, and I knew I needed help keeping her socialized and exercized. Tanya and her wonderful crew would pick Phoebe up in the morning for pack hikes and return her at the end of the day, tired and happy. I did the 'daycare' option, which means she got both the morning and the afternoon hikes and the car-ride for pick ups and drop offs in between -- HIGHLY recommended if you work long hours! Phoebe got training on the walks, too, and her recall and 'stay' improved dramatically. I also loved that I could board Phoebe with Tanya when I went out of town, so that the situation was always familiar for her. Tanya and team are wonderful with dogs, completely reliable, and provide great structure and fun for the pups in their pack. When I was home for pick-up, I was always struck by how happy Phoebe was to see them -- wagging tail, pet-my-belly, chin licks. I've since moved out of the area, and we both miss DD! read more

I was new to the area just a few months ago and was looking for a good doggie daycare, when I found Derby Dogs. Tonya and Eric are GREAT at what they do! They invited my dog and I out on one of their trail walks and it was clear these two know dogs and dog behaviors...which made me feel comfortable and happy to leave my dog with them. I have a very high energy German Shepherd with a temperamental stomach. He has done daycare, weekend boarding, and extended boarding with Derby Dogs. They've dealt with his medications, special diets, training preferences, etc without any questions or problems. Tanya and Eric are incredible. Our Belgian Shepherd/Lab mix puppy, Ronan, does daycare with Derby Dogs and every evening he comes home having had great training, socialization, exercise and playtime--and he's tired!! My fiance and I work long hours and cannot leave Ronan at home, so I bring him to work for a few hours in the morning, he's picked up at noon and dropped back off by 6pm. It's perfect! Not only is Ronan getting the exercise, attention, and training he needs and deserves, but my fiance and I have the peace of mind knowing we don't have to worry about him during the day. This is well worth the cost and I hope Ronan will stay a pack dog with them for a long time to come :) Eric & Tanya really understand dogs, and treat them with the utmost care. Their level of communication with us has been outstanding and when we joined them for a "trial" pack walk to see how Ronan did in the pack, it was clear that they are total pro's when it comes to dog walking....which is a big job! Also, I feel compelled to address THE ONE STAR REVIEW BELOW that someone wrote for not getting an unanswered email....I hardly think that an unreturned email when a business owner is out of town warrants a 1 star rating. And suggesting they should update their website with their vacation schedule is absurd. Yes, not hearing back from someone can be frustrating, sure, ok we've all been there. But giving an AMAZING business like this a 1 star review for such an absurd reason not only hurts the business owners chances of keeping their business afloat, but it also robs potential customers who stand to benefit from Eric and Tanya's business from getting their dogs the care and attention Derby Dogs has to offer! So think twice before you give a lame "revenge rating" out of frustration. For most of us, our dogs are an incredibly important part of our lives; we love them madly, they are part of our family and want the best for them. Tanya & Eric? The absolute best and I highly recommend them. It's hard to trust someone else with your beloved pals, but I really do trust them 100%. I have peace of mind that my dogs are well loved and are getting a great outing with expert, calm, centered, conscientious dog lovers leading their pack. I've seen bored, apathetic dog walkers who take a pack to a dog park and then just sit there. This is not the case with Tanya & Eric. They always take the dogs to an off leash trail and give them a really good work out. They play with them, interact, teach, and manage the pack with knowledge and love. And oh yeah, they are extremely reliable, communicative, friendly & cheerful with the humans too. I can't stress enough that they ~really know~ and love dogs and will work with your dog's particular personality. One of my dogs is a little guy who is fine with other dogs, but somewhat shy with new people. He will also withdraw and mope for a few days if he gets stressed. Naturally I was worried about him on his first outing. It turns out I had no cause for concern. Tanya showed up the first time with the good treats. She already knew Buddy was a bit shy, so she was very gentle, patient and absolutely perfect with him. She didn't chase him down; she gave him a minute and waited for him to come to her. She put on the halter in an instant while he was happily gobbling a treat and it was a move so quick and so expertly handled that he didn't even know it happened until it was over. I was amazed and pleased to no end that it was a completely non-stressful event for him. I knew things were going to work out great right at that moment. Now both of my dogs are overjoyed when Tanya or Eric come to the door. I love it that if you are not home when they drop off, if you leave a notepad, they will write you a little note to tell you where they went and what they did that day and they always ensure the water bowl if full when they leave. I sometimes run across Derby Dogs folks when I walk my two mutts at our favorite hidden gem park. I haven't seen them in a bit, but I was on Yelp and have been meaning to write this for over a year now...so there ya go... These walkers have solid control on the pack they have, and know which ones are ready to play with my dogs and which ones are not. They're always checked in with the behavior of the pack they're walking, keeping them under control at all times. I wish I could say this about all of the dog walking folks I run across...(I just had a run-in with one and it prompted me to write this review of Derby Dogs) Since I have one geriatric old man dog and a bonkers little boxer dog, there's quite a curve there, and it's often hard to blend into a pack to socialize, or even pass by a dog walker without some sort of interaction. I never board my dogs or need a walker, but if I did, I have a feeling that DD would be my first choice. read more

I found Derby Dogs via Yelp and sent an email over to the owners Eric and Tanya, I received an email back almost immediately asking for more details about my dog, Peabody. We also set up a time that I could meet Eric on one of his daily pack walks to see how Peabody did with pack, as well as giving me the chance to meet the pack and Eric! I was thrilled! I loved being able to walk around the park, talk to Eric about Derby Dogs and watch Peabody meet his new friends. Once it was established that Peabody would be a good addition to the pack, we set up his schedule and the rest is history. Tanya, Eric and their team genuinely care for the dogs (and their owners!) they take care of. Peabody was always super excited to see Rima, his dog walker, and they quickly developed a great bond. I love that they take the dogs to different off leash locations and let them run around and you can't beat the prices they charge. Peabody loved going on his hikes, especially the days they got to romp around in the streams and he always came home tired and happy. Derby Dogs is the best. My 12-year old Westie has been doing pack walks with Tanya, Eric, and Ellie for the last year and we both love them. We have had the pleasure of working with Tanya and Eric for the past 6 months. With the birth of our first child, our german wire-haired pointer/border collie mix pup was not getting all of the exercise and extended outdoor time that she truly needed and deserved. Because of personal circumstances, I had to stop sending my dogs on regular hikes as a customer. But my dogs miss them so much, and so every so often I'll contact them and coordinate meeting for hike. Nothing gives you a better sense of what an effective team Tanya and Eric are then joining them on a hike, and what great leadership they provide to their packs. Tanya is fantastic! Our 5 month old Rhodesian Ridgeback, Jasper, joined her pack walks in September and we couldn't be happier. He gets tons of exercise, socialization, and recall training (which is super important to us!). Tanya is exceptionally talented with the dogs, easy to work with, and accommodating of schedule changes and other issues. And she is definitely up to (and even enthusiastic about) the challenge of working with a young and energetic puppy. We used to send Jasper to day care for about the same cost, and joining Derby Dogs has been a game changer. Jasper is so much happier, less stressed, and better exercised. Plus the pick up and drop off service is fantastic. Jasper does the early walk 5 days per week and is gone for about 3 hours per day. I also rest so much easier knowing I can board Jasper with Tanya, who he absolutely loves, if we ever need to travel. We are so happy with this service and can't thank Derby Dogs enough! I cannot say enough good things about Tanya and Eric. They have been absolutely wonderful with my pup and have gone above and beyond in every way possible. I have a very crazy schedule that changes from week to week, and they are always willing to accommodate me and take my pup on a walk, even though it's been last minute many times. And if I ever need them to do something extra like give my pup dinner because I won't be home until late they always come through. Plus, they post cute pics of our pups playing on their doggy website so we can see all the fun we are missing out on. Highly recommended- you won't regret it! read more

I met Tanya and Eric @ coffee shop. I asked what they did, and they mentioned they had a dog / walking / boarding business. Just so happens I have a puppy ( year old). Derby Dogs are the BEST walkers around! My pit bull Nilla has some issues with other dogs and Tanya and Eric were 100% willing to work with us. Tanya first came for a meeting to see my girl's temperament and then worked closely with us to make sure that everything would go smoothly. They had to do some rearranging of Nilla's schedule to make sure she was with the right pack but were always patient and positive. They even let me come with them on a couple walks to learn how to better manage Nilla when she encountered new dogs on hikes. I disagree with everything Charles B. said. Tanya and Eric had a system for everything they did and were never out of control. They cleaned up after their dogs and were always very professional. Nilla LOVED Tanya and Eric and was always exhausted and happy when she returned from her walks. Unfortunately, we moved out of the area but I still wholeheartedly recommend Derby Dogs to every bay area owner. read more
