First off, if anyone remembers the ill-fated Steady Habit Brewing Company in/around Higganum, well, there's no relation. Instead, this is a glorified taproom on the edge of downtown Shelton, near the south-central part of this state we affectionately call The Land of Steady Habits. Minutes from Routes 8 and 34, they serve a wide selection of fine local- and Connecticut-made beers, wines, and spirits, as well as some appetizers and light lunch fare, with a pizza oven waiting to be hooked up as of this writing. I picked a beer from one of my regular Danbury hangouts, Charter Oak Brewing Company. The draft beer tasted just as fresh as if Scott or Michelle had poured it themselves. Steady Habits must keep their beer cold and their tap lines spotless! I don't normally go for a grilled cheese sandwich, but with me not being super-hungry today, I went for it. This seems to be their de facto specialty (for now -- remember, pizza oven being assembled), and I've got to say, it does not disappoint! I ordered it Cuban-style, with ham, pickles, and pepper jack cheese. The ham was missing and the pickles were on the side, but the sandwich quickly went back and returned with the forgotten meat browned and inserted (and comped!) with an honest apology, then I added as many pickles as I wanted and gave the rest to my girlfriend, which she appreciated. I've got to say, that was one of the best grilled cheeses I've had in quite some time! The chips were a nice accompaniment, as fries and beer are a recipe for feeling bloated. There are no paper menus, only QR codes, so don't leave your phone in the car! (Hopefully they have free Wi-Fi for the LTE-challenged. I forget.) On the bright side, their web menu tells you instantly what's on tap and what's kicked! Well-played! The bar service is almost instantaneous when you're the only patrons; not sure how it is when they're packed to their sizable capacity. We were looking for a meal and a beer, so we didn't partake in watching the football game, sitting around a big table with friends, or trying out the arcade games. There aren't any breweries in Shelton, and while Bad Sons in Derby is awesome but seems to be constantly packed, Steady Habits will surely become one of my steady habits whenever my travels take me this way.

We were turned away because my cousin is 20. If we were able to provide proof of guardianship, we would have been allowed in. When we asked the waitress why we couldn't just eat, she was very dismissive, rude and did not explain why this is their rule, she simply stated "its a cafe liquor license". My husband and I have been here over a dozen times and have only been carded half of the time, and we've ordered alcohol everytime. Riddle me that. There has never been any expectation to be 21 to just walk in. All of a sudden we can't let a 20 year old just get lunch with a water? I'm sure they got themselves into an underage drinking disaster but that shouldn't affect everyone else. I understand the rules are written on the website, but we've never had an issue previously so why would I think to check if I needed to bring guardianship paperwork with me? The entire experience was bizarre and unappreciated. We will not be back ever.

I knew from Kindred Spirits that 90+ was a nice wine to drink and cook. I was also looking for a red. I've been losing my taste for red wines. I've always bought Woodbridge, Mondavi and Josh. K.S. recommended Trecciaia Toscana. It's from Italy. Very nice wine. Not fruity or red blend. It's a nice pairing with cheese and steak dinner. I do a lot of cooking and baking. K.S. has helped me come up with different desserts just by suggesting a liquor. I highly recommend K.S. for all entertaining needs
