Food was really good. Service was fast. Inside is smoking, which is just weird for a restaurant. Does Marion County not have a no smoking ordinance? Ordered takeout for the whole family the day after Christmas. Wings, fries, sandwiches, and hot cheese balls. Everything I tried was good -- bone in wings with Cattleman's gold and honey habanero, beer batter fries, and hot cheese balls. The beer batter fries were super good and I'd definitely recommend. Both wing sauces I tried were pretty good -- the honey habanero was more sweet than spicy but still tasty. The cheese balls were on the dry side but the ranch they came with was some of the best restaurant not-from-the-bottle ranch I've had in a while and just took the already delicious beer batter fries to the next level. Service was fast and everything was accurate. We'll be back next time we're visiting. read more

Food: Burger and Beer Battered FF. Burger Bun size: 6 inches. Actual burger size: 3.5 inches. I'm pretty disappointed at this point, but it did taste pretty good for a hockey puck sized slab of ground jerky. What really caught my disappointment and my 2 stars is that my burger obviously had to have been forgotten on the grill. 6" bun and shy of a 4" burger? And I paid HOW MUCH? And waited almost 45 minutes. This entire experience was a joke. I feel like this place could do way better with a better crew. Only good thing is the bartenders are eager to serve you more alcohol to make up for their abysmal kitchen. read more

I've become a regular, as I recently moved to Fairmont and this is close to my house. It's well worthy of praise. My only complaint is it is a bar, and I don't deal well with lots of smoke, and that happens on occasion. Despite that though, I rarely drink (I have yet to have an alcoholic drink at the Derby in a few dozen visits), and I still find it worthy of patronizing on the food alone. Toss in ample TVs and a friendly staff more than willing to put whatever game on I'm there to watch, and it's highly recommended. My personal favorites are the jalapeno burgers (Easily Fairmont's BEST burgers, hands down), the greek salad with buffalo chicken, the Italian hoagies, the cream cheese stuffed peppers, and lastly, their wings and wing sauces are top notch as well. This is NOT a dive bar. It's a bar with great food, and is a good enough restaurant to visit despite it being a bar. And, given the prices, it's simply an unbeatable bargain. As far as a comment that the place is trouble, well, it sounds like that lady wasn't even a customer, went to pick up a friend who was a problem, and somehow managed to become a problem herself. I have NEVER seen anyone, customer or employee, so much as raise their voice in The Derby, unless it was to cheer a team on at one of the games they always have on (another good thing!). And I've traveled far and wide more than most. 35 states, all 55 WV counties, 5 countries. The Derby compares favorably to most pubs for good people and good food at outstanding prices. read more

Wings are really good, especially the blue and gold! Salads are really big, although just iceberg lettuce and toppings. They've had West Coast IPA on draught for a while which is a big bonus. Smoking IS allowed in the bar, which is great if you're a smoker, not so much, if you're not. I like the juke box too. read more

Just ate there for the first time and was pleasantly surprised. We had the philly steak hoagie, the jumbo fish sandwich, 7 of the spicy garlic wings, the fried mushrooms and a pitcher of beer. Cost --- $30.00. The sandwiches and wings were very good and the mushrooms were average. All in all I would highly recommend. The only downer was the smoke, but still will go again. read more

I have traveled all over and gone to many different bar and grills, but nothing can compare to my awful experience that I had at the Derby Bar and Grill last night. I was there for a total of ten minutes only to pick someone else up that was to intoxicated to drive and in that ten minutes, a gentleman that worked there and was at the bar off the clock, was soon after I got there screaming profanity at me and talking to me, that under no circumstance should any woman be talked to. I do not need to quote word for word what the man said, I am sure you can guess. I would never recommend this place to anyone, and since this is how they run there business, chances are they will not be in business for long, if not I am sure they will be sued for harassment of some kind in the very near future. No male should ever threaten a woman's life, and I am sure this isn't the first time since the attack on me happened almost immediately after walking in the door. read more

Had lunch here today and I ordered the bacon cheeseburger with beer battered fries. I really liked the fries, but there was nothing about the hamburger that would make it stand out. The bun was delicious, but it was so big, it overshadowed the burger and toppings. The waitress was friendly and we didn't have to wait too long for our food. Great food, good service, good atmosphere in that it isn't a "college bar" but is more of a local watering hole. A good place to relax, have a drink, watch whatever game is on one of the three flatscreen TVs or the big screen TV. Gets quite noisy and crowded during WVU and Steelers games, but that is to be expected for a sports bar. Overall, a good place to hang out and have a drink. read more
