    Tasty samosas!

Grab one of the set menues to get a mix of dishes. Good price and you will get full , I even got a doggy bags with me home (quite unusual for me, but maybe my friends didn't contribute as much?). I can recommend to order the "søt"-naan bread, really tasty, even though a bit sweet. The menu came with a few starters, mains and desserts - ask the chef for recommendations/alterations to the menu. Will definitely visit again some time soon!

What a gem! Der Peppern Gror is one of the few stylish restaurantants that serve Indian food. In Oslo classy and Indian rarely go hand in hand, but within the city hall square we have it! It's a refreshing addition to the Oslo food-scene. Let me start with the best part: service! Our lovely waitress was more than attentive, kept us entertained throughout our night and exceeded all expectations. I am only sad I did not get to hug her goodbye (If any business owners see this, give your nordlending female waitress a biiig hug, she is doing her job incredibly well!) The menu has several options to chose from, "curries", "chef's recommendations", "home-style" and a few more. We went with dishes we were unable to pronounce the names of, but gosh was it good! Amongst others we had the aubergine-dish, Baingun Bharta. Now it was absolutely delicious, but given that it was one of the few items categorized as "spicy", I'd expect it to be way spicier. That is not to say I was offered fresh chili on the side. The interiors are quite different from other places I've paid a visit to. It's homey, dim lit and you feel comfortable in your place. There are quite a few seats outside, and if it's sunny outside, I'd recommend a seat in the sun. Just remember your shades! As the sun sets it does get chilly, and I was not able to spot any heaters nearby. Now differs this place from many other well-established Indian restaurants, are the cocktails. PRAISE THE GODS for Chili Passion. What a drink! What an explosion! What a time to be alive!

Der Peppern Gror is suspiciously and, to me, happily reminiscient of the London restaurant chain Dishoom. The interior is seriously cool and modern, and very different from most other Indian restuarants in Oslo. The menu is divided into smaller street food dishes, grill, "home-style cooking" and "restaurant curries", where the latter category contains the familier dishes you would expect to find at any indian restaurant, such as Butter Chicken and Daal Makhani. We went for two smaller street food dishes to start with - Gol Gappe and deep fried chicken with coconut. Gol Gappe are small crispy domes made of chickpea flour containing shredded cooked vegetables and served with two sauces to pour into the domes before popping the entire thing in your mouth and enjoying a rather unusual explosion of flavours - I liked these, but would say that I would have liked even more balanced flavour in the sauces. The fried chicken was undoubtedly good, but somewhat too fatty to my tastes - the portion is also very big for a starter, even for two people. For mains, we chose the homestyle Tadka Daal and Gosht Chappain (tandoori lamb chops) with tandoori sauce, with tandoori parantha (a wholemeal flatbread with layers of butter inside), rice and raita. The perfectly seasoned and cooked lamb chops were a standout, and the tandoori sauce (which the waiter was keen to point out is not found in India, but is made to accomodate westerns eating styles) was rich and delicious. The tadka daal was maore subtle in flavour, but also very good and well-balanced. The tandoori bread was a new experience for me, but definitely a pleasant one. My only complaint would be that the rice was on the dry side. Although there were some tempting options, there was no room for dessert, as the portions are quite large. The service deserves to be mentioned especially, as both of the waiters that served us were exceedingly firendly and keen to answer any questions we had about the food. We will definitely be back to sample more of the menu!

Vada Pav, one of their best and is indeed a delicious appetizer

The Masala Dosai was a crepe made from a fermented rice and uridhal (lentil) batter, served with a filling of spiced potatoes and served with dhal (lentil soup), coconut chutney, and sambar (vegetable/lentil soup) on the side. The crepe was perfectly thin and crispy, and each of the accompaniments was perfectly spiced (especially with lots of mustard seeds). I also tried the Kottu Rotti Chicken, a dish made of chopped roti flatbreads stir-fried with shredded chicken, egg, onion, and chilli. The rotis retained a chewy texture, and the meaty chicken and spices turned the boring leftovers into an exciting new dish. Even more memorable than the food, however, was our server, a new immigrant from Nepal, who made us feel right at home and made special accommodations to serve us even close to closing time. This is a great, local, small business worth supporting!

You step down into the basement of an typical Oslo building and the good smell of the tandoori oven invites you already. I guess it is a also a very cozy place to for dinner (middag) Ordering is simple and can be done in Norwegian or English - for sure also in more Indian languages which I don't speak. The food tastes like in good restaurants in India and the "spiciness" is somewhere between the more moderate style in Germany and the hotter one found in the United Kingdom. On request all other "levels" would have been possible. The mango lassie was as expected and the food delicious and to the point. In case of even colder weather than the day I visited the place additional electric heaters are held ready for your convenience. Me being very picky about the excess usage of air-condition and exaggerated ventilation was helped by kindly shutting down these devices for a while - mange takk!. The lady who serves had a smile and was obviously aware that it is worthwhile working there. The toilets are clean and spacy. Go there! - is was the best Indian place I could find in Oslo so far (March 2011). smoke-free environment
