The menu also has some lunch items like schnitzel. We ordered two einspänners and some cake. The sacher was much lighter than usual, I usually find it so rich and dense, but not this one. The topfen strudel was a bit dry. The dining room is old world and charming. You definitely feel like you're getting the old Viennese coffee house experience. Overall not too pricey, and they requested a tip. Not sure this is the best place for kaffee & kuchen, but it was good to experience as visitors to Vienna.

The waiter then pretty much left us alone as we took our time eating and drinking. Pricewise, the cafe seemed similar to other coffee shops we had visited during our trip. So why not more stars? Largely because the food being offered isn't vegan friendly. Maybe that is due to tradition, fine I understand that if that's the case, but I've heard that there are other traditional cafes in Vienna that do have vegan options. Just give me one. The fact that they don't have a vanilla slice was really surprising as it's the one thing most Viennese cafes have. The hot chocolate here was the most disappointing. It was a milk hit chocolate that just tasted like warm milk and looked barely chocolatey. Three out of three of us disliked it. This place ruined the whole experience for us and it's a shame as it looks lovely from the outside. I would not come back here again.

Gerstner is a long-standing bakery with a few locations (including at the former summer palace). They had a shop relatively near our hotel, so we stopped in early during the trip. If you are facing the State Opera House, Gerstner's is on the right across the street. Note that there is also some as or more famous outlet for cakes behind the Opera House also, but they appeared to have a line when we walked by. At Gerstner's you enter at street level where they have a dessert counter with displays. You can get a slice to go here. However, if you want more of the full experience, you can go upstairs (they have an elevator as well). A wide curving staircase gets you to the rather small 2nd level (the first floor, in local parlance). There are some tables here, but it has the air of a bookstore coffee shop. We opted to continue up to the next floor. Here, there is a dark hallway where you approach the host stand. There was one couple ahead of us and they got seated quickly. I think they had a bar as well as dining, so they ask which you want. We just wanted dessert, so they walked us past the bar. This floor has high ceilings and palace-like decoration. The vibe is definitely 'special' but they don't charge extortionate rates for it, which was nice. We were shown to a small table in the main dining room. I think you could see part of the Opera House out of the open windows. Two of us got coffees and we all split a Sachertorte. We enjoyed it, but everyone agreed that it was a bit dry. Maybe the Viennese don't go for moist cakes. They do have other items on the menu and I think you can get a regular meal here (schnitzel, salads, etc.). However, we visited around 2:30 p.m. on a weekday, so we just wanted the cake. The bill was reasonable, and we all agreed that this was a worthwhile experience.

I ordered my usual Kaiserschmarrn and a drink. I had noticed that the table next to me had a drink that looked good, so when the waitress took my order, I specifically told her that I wanted the same drink the table next to me was having. When my order arrived, it was brought by a different waitress. The drink looked completely different from what I had pointed to, so I asked her what it was. She told me it was a double espresso. I explained that I had not ordered a double espresso and again pointed to the drink at the table next to me, which was clearly a hot chocolate. The waitress then called over the waitress who had originally taken my order. Instead of simply acknowledging that there had been a misunderstanding, she insisted, "That's what you ordered." When I explained again that it wasn't, she told me, "It's the same thing." A **double espresso and a hot chocolate are obviously not the same thing.** What bothered me even more than the incorrect order was the way both waitresses spoke to me. Their attitudes and tone were extremely rude, dismissive, and demeaning--as though I was stupid for pointing out the obvious mistake. The interaction became uncomfortable enough that people sitting at other tables were looking over at us. To make matters worse, my Kaiserschmarrn was **cold**. It tasted as though it had already been sitting out for some time before it was brought to my table. I understand that mistakes happen. Had they simply apologized for the misunderstanding and corrected the drink, I would not have had an issue. Instead, I was argued with and spoken down to over something that could have been resolved in seconds. This was genuinely one of the worst customer-service experiences I have ever had at a restaurant, and certainly not what I expected from an establishment with Demel's reputation. After several previous visits that I enjoyed, it is extremely disappointing to say that I will not return and will no longer recommend Demel to my friends.
