I began my dental journey with DBD during the spring /Summer which was going to be quite extensive and costly. I had not missed a single appointment and prepaid as they requested. The last appointment I had the rude lady at the scheduling desk wanted to schedule my next appointment for the Fall. Due to my profession, during the school year it's hard to schedule ahead without actually having my schedule and guessing I would be free was not a good idea. However, she insisted and so I did. When we got to my appointment week I had to cancel because I would not be available.The dentist/hygientisf knew I had a loose tooth and it was a part of my plan to fix. Well, it was literally falling out and I tried to schedule an appointment/emergency. Not only did she tell me they were booked post beginning of the year but the ONLY date she could see me was literally a day or two away for the rest of the year.. Well, I can't cancel class so I had to decline but asked her almost by week if anything was open or waitlist. She had a nasty attitude and said NOTHING. Nada. Well, I told her I was going to try and find someone else to get me in sooner than Feb 24' and to please email my X-rays etc. Honestly, if your dentist doesn't consider your tooth coming out an emergency and not willing to work with you, why keep them. So, I finally found a surgeon that could get me in but needed a referral from my dentist. Because I told them that I was going to find a new dentist so I COULD BE SEEN SOONER THAN FEB FOR A TOOTH FALLING OUT IN THE FRONT OF MY MOUTH, they took it personal. I asked them if they would send a referral and she said NO! You told us you were getting a new dentist and we refunded your money for the visit you canceled on so we can't help you. WOW! Way to leave a patient hanging all bc I needed to get my tooth implant asap not Feb. what was I suppose to do, look like a fool for Christmas bc your booked and didn't want to work with me to get me in if even on the weekend. Most people consider a missing tooth an emergency. I was in pain and needed help! This place will take your money and treat you like junk if you don't follow their rules. They tried telling me I needed dental work that another place told me I didn't need, gave me an insane quote, and when I left a bad review they called me threatening me that their "legal team" was looking into my review, trying to claim that the quote I KNOW they gave me wasn't accurate. The dentist had horrible bedside manor. This place treats people like ATM's. DONT GO HERE. If you have any kind of dental anxiety, please visit any other practice in town. This practice is not equipped to handle those with anxiety...Originally, I booked here because they had a lot of availability, could get me and my daughter seen quickly, and the staff was prompt and friendly on the phone. I knew that I had a cracked molar that needed fixing. I had a positive first appointment with a very nice hygienist! I was told that I would need a crown placed on the cracked molar and an additional cavity filled. I wanted it to get taken care of ASAP, so I was happy they were able to see me quickly. I confirmed that the crown appointment I would have the same hygienist, as she made me feel comfortable. Upon arriving for the crown appointment, it was a different hygienist. I was nervous, but tried to make the best of this knowing that schedules can often change at the last minute - I was a bit disappointed the practice didn't make me aware of this before, having known my anxiety and me specifically asking to make sure the original hygienist was booked. I was very nervous for the crown appointment, but tried staying relaxed, brought headphones, and opted for the nitrous. I was set up on the nitrous, and I was given the numbing shots by the dentist. He left the room for a few minutes and came back in. He asked if my lip was tingling, and I replied, "NO". I am very sensitive to anesthesia, so I know the sensation well. He put another shot in and proceeded. Initially, I didn't feel anything, but then I felt a very sharp ZING, almost like getting burnt by a curling iron (but, ya know, on my tooth). So I quickly raised my hand, as instructed. He did not stop. I tried raising my hand further and struggled to talk with the guard/pillow in my mouth. The dentist abruptly stood up as he noticed that I was struggling, and said "we definitely can NOT do this today with her. Call her husband". And stormed out of the room. I was shocked that this was his behavior and he never even asked if I was okay or addressed me. After trying to explain my pain and fear to the hygienist, she just told me to calm down and stop talking because the nitrous wouldn't work. They called my husband (without me knowing)- who had to bring our toddler and baby. I asked if we could just complete the procedure because I was already upset and didn't want to have to come back. He explained that the anxiety I was facing was my own fault and was preventing the Novocain from working. I was a little in shock and very upset. I just asked that he finish because I didn't want half of my tooth gone and then still have to return. He obliged and finished. I later found out, they never called my husband (who had brought our two children to come get me), so they sat in the parking lot for 30+ minutes. My husband finally called them and they said I would "be done shortly", so my husband decided to drive around...45 minutes later, I was finished and called him. If you have small children, you understand the inconvenience and annoyance to load and unload kids and keep them stationary in the car. Following the procedure, I was given little information about my tooth, I didn't know if I could eat right away or not and how much pain to be expected. The following day my mouth was very sore, and I called to cancel my cleaning and cavity that had yet to be filled for 6 months from now. They poked and prodded at why I wouldn't be returning, and I explained that I had an awful experience with the dentist and would prefer to see someone else. I asked to be refunded for the cavity that was not completed. They assured me that after dental insurance claims were filed, someone would call me so we could settle the overpayment. After a week of pain and sensitivity, I called our old dentist in town (that is hard to book..probably because he's really good at his job and very popular). So he found time to fit me in and saw that my crown was placed too high. He shaved it down and let me know because of the sensitivity I am having that this tooth will need a root canal - only weeks after having this crown it still needs additional work! read more

I had an absolutely terrible experience here. I was referred out to get a root canal. I chose Dentistry By Design after a consultation with them because they (Dr. Gilsdorf) assured me they would work with my extreme anxiety and severe gag reflex. I was given sedation prescriptions before the procedure and a nitrous mask during the procedure. Dr. Gilsdorf has absolutely no decent bedside manner and was beyond rude with me. While waiting for the root canal to begin my legs were shaking: likely due to all the sedations meds and coldness of the office. The Dr rudely said "you'll have to stop that." I was taken aback at his lack of empathy as he so explicitly sold me on during the consultation. After one shot of Novocaine I still had complete feeling in the tooth to be worked on. They gave a second shot and started the procedure. I could feel every bit of the drilling into my tooth and the pain was unbearable, I kindly raised my hand to stop for a moment and see what else could be done. At this time Dr. Gilsdorf got out of his chair, and with an extreme temper said "there's nothing we can do, you'll need to leave," and he stormed out of the room. I left that office in tears with a temporary filling and still in need of a root canal. Since my procedure was NEVER completed I asked for some sort of refund. I pre-paid for a root canal. I left with nothing but a temporary filling and they are saying I will get no refund. I would like to point out that all the office staff and assistants were very kind to me, and even gave me recommendations for a Dentist who would help me better than theirs. I absolutely do NOT recommend Gilsdorf to anyone for anything. He was rude and should find a new career, this is obviously not for him. Or at the very least, he should let patients know how utterly rude and condescending he is before they agree to using him. read more

I have never had a bad experience at a dentist until now. In April, I called to ask if they could replace a filling that had popped off of one of my molars. I had had it for about four years. They needed me to come in for an x-ray. I did not have dental insurance at the time. When I asked for an estimate, they would not give me one. A week later, I went to the office for the x-ray. The hygienist rushed me into the x-ray, even though I had not finished filling out my paperwork. I felt extremely uncomfortable as she started x-rays with my unfinished paperwork. Afterward, when she discovered I didn't have health insurance, she suggested I use their dentist program, which was $400 upfront. The dentist did not even meet with me to discuss the treatment for my filling. Before I left, I prepayed for the filling replacement, which was $242, plus the $123 for the two x-rays. I noticed you could pay the filling prepay in installments should you be unable to pay entirely upfront, but the woman at the counter did not mention there was a "management charge of 5%" on these four separate payments. It felt scummy that they wouldn't mention the fee because the writing was so tiny and it felt like some people might overlook this. I returned at the beginning of May for the filling on a Monday at 8 am, but when I arrived at the office, they said I "wasn't on the schedule," even though they had called to confirm my appointment the Friday before. Because I am a graduate student, I had to postpone my appointment until July. When I returned in July to have my filling done, I had dental insurance through Blue Cross Blue Shield. I asked them if they would be able to refund me the pre-pay difference because my insurance is said to cover fillings at least 70%. They agreed to refund me the money. The hygienist responsible for numbing my mouth before the filling did not numb it correctly or in the right area, so I felt intense pain during the drilling portion of my filling, which I signaled to the dentist from the first sign of pain. After about twenty minutes of painful poking and prodding, the dentist finally added more numbing agent to the area. At the end of my appointment, I paid another $100 something for "the $50 copay (for BCBSKS insurance) and some other fees that they didn't really explain. Keep in mind, I have already paid $242 prepay for this filling, which on my estimate from BCBS seems to have been recorded as $269. BCBS says that I should have paid $67 out of pocket. Overall, I have spent over $300 on this particular filling. I called the office in August to ask about my refund, which I still haven't received yet. They said that I seem to have a refund of $144, which means I have paid at least $160 for the filling. Again, I had my filling appointment July 30. It is August 18, and I still have not seen the refund to my card. They wanted me to schedule a cleaning, but I declined and found a different dentist (Family & Implant Dentistry -- great experience!). Definitely would never go back. This office just seems like a huge waste of time and money. Very disorganized, quite rude/impersonable staff, and overall extremely unpleasant experience. Would not recommend ever. read more

My appointment was scheduled at 2:45 but I wasn't even brought back to the room until after 4:10. I was at the point of walking out and wish I had. I hated the whole vibe of the place. The woman who worked the front desk was the only person who had any warmth to her personality. Everyone else was rude and no one apologized for the fact i'd had to wait an hour and a half for my appointment while my husband and 2 year old was waiting out in the car. I expected to get my teeth cleaned and get antibiotics for an infected wisdom tooth. I spent over 2 hours waiting for this appointment for him to take less than 3 minutes to look at my teeth and prescribe me antibiotics. He told me I'd need to make a separate appointment for my teeth cleaning. Like wtffffff. Not to mention this place is extremely cold and uncomfortable. read more

I moved to Kansas a year ago and set out to find a new dentist ASAP. I saw the reviews on Google so I thought I would give Dr. Gilsdorf a try and boy am I glad that my daughter and I did. I have had a lot of dental work done in the past and it has left me with anxiety and Dr. Gilsdorf and his staff were very understanding and patient. After the dental work was complete a few days later I felt like my bite was off and they encouraged me to come in until it was just right. I also ended up having lots of pain and needing a root canal specialist, they gave me antibiotics, helped me with pain management and made sure I got to the right specialist right away. The hygienist was 30 minute late to my appointment, then spent another 10 minutes making a fuss over my previous dental x-rays (performed by another facility) saying they were "of mediocre quality" and that my previous dentist missed a cavity that she was seeing on the film (which this new dentist confirmed was NOT actually true), and spoke over me every time I'd try to speak. The dentist was cold and spent only 60 seconds talking to me about the basic cosmetic problem I came in for in the first place, just to refer me to an orthodontist for teeth whitening and Invisalign (even though their website advertises both those things). Then, they wanted to schedule my next dental cleaning 6 mo out from now and asked for a deposit for it, because I was "scheduling the doctor's time". I schedule the doctor's time ANYtime I make any sort of medical appointment, but I have never had to leave a deposit for any type of checkup. Everyone here was rude, cold, and unhelpful. It felt more like an assembly line, like how many patients can they fit in one day and push right back out the door. Quantity over quality. Definitely won't be coming back. read more

WOW! From start to finish this office was amazing! Not only did they have better technology than the dental office I was going to down the street (Family and Implant Dentistry) they had a more professional staff, were up-front with me about what insurance was considered in network, and even called my insurance providers to make sure that my daughters dental work would be covered, or if not, how much my co-pay would be. They didn't act like I was twisting their arms to ensure I wouldn't have large out of pocket costs, they sympathized and understood that we're all budgeted. So impressed! It's a gorgeous, clean office with coffee, prizes for the kids, and a humble staff that doesn't make you feel like you're just another dollar sign like my previous dentists office. I'm SO HAPPY that my friend told me about this place!! Why did I switch to Dentistry by Design? I had to find another dentist was because I had an awful experience with Family Implant Dentistry. The most recent issue we had was that my daughters tooth abscessed and her crown fell off after only a short time, thus why I called Dentistry by Design based on a recommendation from a friend. I have had issues with my dental work also, but I just assumed that it was normal to have problems with crowns hurting after the fact, breaking off, teeth becoming more sensitive, extreme pain for months after a procedure... not realizing that this isn't normal, and that I did need to seek outside help to correct the issues that I'm having/have had. Family and Implant Dentistry was also misleading about my insurance coverage, continued to perform "necessary" dental work that wasn't necessary, and I have thousands of dollars in dental bills that I'm paying to Family and Implant Dentistry and another place because their billing employee never bothered to tell me that my insurance was maxed out. While I know some responsibility falls on me for that, I also have three kids, an active duty military husband, and am a full time student. I don't have someone being paid at home to ensure billing is done properly and insurance coverage is good. I had also asked for them to pre-authorize procedures so I would know that I was covered, but it wasn't until a woman nonchalantly told me that I had thousands of dollars in outstanding charges that I found out that they hadn't really checked to see if my procedures would be covered or not. I assume as a business, they would want to ensure that they were paid... so why would you allow something like that to happen? What if I couldn't afford to pay for it? I'm having to make payments as is now, because I don't have that kind of money sitting around! I literally CRIED on the phone when finding out what my final total was... I was so upset and mad that I cried because I wasn't expecting to be billed like that. In all of my life, I have NEVER been to a dental office where they didn't make sure that your procedures would be covered, or at the very least tell you what your co-pay would be. When I initially called my prior practice to ask if they accepted Met Life and Delta Dental they said they did, but they failed to say that they were NOT in network for EITHER of my insurances! Eventually they apologized for this "mix up" but now I have an insane amount of dental bills to pay on top of paying for my sons braces... their apology doesn't pay my new dental bills. I do NOT feel that I will have this problem at Dentistry by Design. When I asked about my insurance coverage they assured me that they accepted both Met Life and Delta Dental and that BOTH were in network. They have already far exceeded the experience I had at F.I.Dentistry and I have every intention to continue having every member of my family attend this practice for the remaining time we have in Manhattan. My daughter absolutely loved her dentist and I can't wait to begin giving my business to a respectable facility that is forthcoming with their information and takes the time to ensure that my family will not be financially strapped because they are "too busy" to take the time to make sure that I have coverage. My seven year old daughter was so excited about her experience there that my middle child, who is ten, asked when he can go to see the dentist! I cannot say enough good about Dentistry by Design. If you want a personal experience where you are treated like you're family instead of being treated like another dollar sign, you need not go elsewhere. So since moving to Manhattan area 9 years ago I have changed dentist's multiple times. Only because of personal treatment from the staff. So started coming here in late 2014 and have been very pleased. Dr.Brett has been amazing and very laid back man who won't judge cause of your "dental issues". The only issue I do see is the waiting room..a little on the small side but cozy. Great and friendly staff who will answer any question you have. ***Update*** I have since taken my son to a different dentist (A Tooth Story in Manhattan, which I highly recommend!!!!) and the stains "that may be cavities but I'm not worried" did in fact turn out to be cavities due to deep grooves in his teeth that his toothbrush bristles couldn't reach and clean. And sealants on baby teeth are a thing, just not covered by insurance, which his new dentist will do if I decide to proceed. Our new dentist also did a thorough exam and did xrays to confirm what exactly was going on with my son's teeth, which is EXACTLY what should have happened at Dentistry by Design! ***Update*** There's been a few things I haven't been pleased with about this office, but I won't bore you with those. I will however share why I won't be going back and why I won't be taking my 3 children back. One of my sons, who is 2 1/2, had his first real dental visit/check up 3 weeks ago. He was given a clean bill of health and we were told he had no cavities and things "looked perfect". Fast forward 2 weeks and I notice some dark brown/black spots on the biting surfaces of 2 of his molars. Worried about possible cavities I called to get him seen. The Dentist looked at his teeth a week after I called and said he had "stains that could turn into cavities and we will keep an eye on them" and that he "wasn't worried". Well I was worried. I needed some reassurance and had questions. I even asked about sealants and he said "In my x number of years of practice I've not heard of putting sealants on baby teeth". He came off condescending and seemed annoyed, almost insulted that I was questioning why my son had these "pre-cavities" after being told 3 weeks prior that his teeth looked perfect. His reply to my questions was a pat on the shoulder and a swift referral to another dentist for a second opinion. Needless to say we will not be returning to this office or be going to the dentist he referred us to for a "second opinion". I will be shopping for a new dentist that specializes in children. read more

I was new to the area and a first time patient here and I felt extremely welcome from Day 1. The staff has always been great about working with my schedule and I've never had to wait long for an appointment. I had veneers put in this year and I am so pleased with how they turned out! Dr. Gilsdorf and his staff were very good about explaining every step to me. They made a personal model set of veneers so I could see what mine would look like before I got them. The veneers didn't turn out bulky or uneven or mismatched or anything, it feels like I've had them my whole life! After having a consult with the "dentist" and him reassuring me that he had graduated at the top of his class and trained by a world renowned mentor, and specialized in someone with anxiety, I chose to have this "dentist" do full extractions on top and bottom and do immediate full dentures. Biggest mistake of my life. I was asked to pay for all up front what the insurance did not cover. To include my out of pocket expense of temporary dentures and impressions and they also included my cost of permanent dentures which would not be placed on my for 8 to 12 months due to healing. After discussing this with my insurance I found that legally they can not charge you for permanent dentures until they are placed in my mouth (not a year in advance). On my first visit to get the impressions done the technician (new I am sure) was unable to get them. The "dentist" came in and did an impression. He was unable to get it correct. He got very upset and stated "I am not sure what we can even do for you" he then stomped out. I asked the young lady if he was upset and why, she said he was just thinking. He returned and tried one more time and told me that the impressions took on that turn (to find out after extractions and temp placed in mouth that they definitely did not). When returning for the extractions, bottoms were extracted no issues, top however was a different story. The top was not numb, when trying to tell him this he promptly put his tool down and said there was nothing he could do for me and stomped out. The bottom dentures had been placed but nothing with the top. I left there incomplete, feeling embarrassed and scared of being half done and no money left to go elsewhere. Later that afternoon I started realizing that the dentures were so big that I could not close my mouth, drink from a cup or even a straw. I was drooling due to not being able to close my mouth (my lips would not touch). We called the office and they told me to come in on Monday. When going to the appointment on that Monday I was told that they could not thin out the acrylic on the outside instead they shaved off from the inside (which made the teeth to where they did not fit snug on my gums) Fast forward. 8 trips later for adjustments within 4 weeks, I was "looking a little normal" as the young girls working there told me (because the "dentist stopped seeing me or overseeing the technicians work on me after my first adjustment visit on that Monday) and I was able to force my lips closed. When asking about getting my money refunded only for the teeth that were not extracted to pay for the oral surgeon to complete the job I was told that I would only receive 106.00$ of the 1000.00 plus that was owed for no extraction of the top teeth, I have had to haggle and got a little more back but not everything that I paid for the uppers. They are set on not giving back my full amount owed. I have since found that I may have to replace the temporaries in order to get them to fit (I can fit my tongue between the teeth and my gums due to them improperly adjusting them and no dentist overseeing what was being done and improper impressions and direction, I have not been able to eat or speak correctly and my teeth pop out of my mouth when talking or when I bend over since and have incurred more cost with starting over with an absolute savior of a dentist that is going to try to make me "normal" to the best of his ability. Save your mental health and your bank account, run very far away from this dentist and do not look back! read more

I had to get my fillings done and couldn't find a babysitter for my 3 months old... She was fussy and crying while I got my fillings. The entire time the nurses and ladies at the reception took care of her! What a nice place where you don't feel guilty bringing a baby! I can recommend this dentist to anyone. Besides I learned more about my teeth in the three times I went than in the last 33 years of going to the dentist. This Dental business & their staff are just awesome!!!! They're always very friendly & on time. My 5 year old daughter, & myself are both Military Dependants, & they service both of us. ALL of the staff are great with children. Their office, & dental cubicles are EXTREMELY cleanly, & they offer the kids, Coloring Books & Crayons as they wait to be seen. The children also get to pick a cool toy out of a Treasure Chest after each visit. My daughter loves going to visit them. Their business is just awesome & I enjoy each & every visit!!! read more

I have had a great experience with Dentistry by Design. I have had appointments for myself and my children. The staff is very friendly and professional. I really feel like they care for their patients. They give opinions on treatments but I have never felt pressured to have something done. My children feel right at home and I feel at ease in the clinic. They accept Tricare Dental and are upfront about pricing and insurance, which was a major selling point for me. But ultimately I wanted a dentist that I could trust and that my whole family would be comfortable with and that is exactly what I got. This is hands down the best dentist I've ever been to. I've had cleanings, fillings, and I'm in the process of getting an implant done with Dr. G. Their use of technology is unbelievable and I'm thrilled with all the work I've had done thus far. The staff is extremely friendly and make you feel so comfortable! I moved to this area almost a year ago from my home in CO and had to leave a very good family dentist who I trusted and had seen for many years so finding one that was as good was going to be a challenge I thought. I read other reviews on Yelp about local dental offices and was decided to give Dentistry by Design a try and I'm glad I did! The staff was very nice and accommodating along with being very professional. One of the ladies gave me a tour upon my arrival to get me accustomed to their office and the place was super clean! Oh..and they have blankets! Seriously? How awesome is that? I'm always so cold and although I didn't use one during my visit, it's great to know that the option is there. Anyways, my dental hygienist's name was Carly and she was fantastic! Very thorough and knowledgeable about what she does and with the help of the dentist, Dr. Gilroy, they helped me come up with a solution for my problems. Also, they don't try to push or sell unwanted or unnecessary services onto you, which is great! I've got my kiddos going in a couple of weeks, we've found a new family dental office! read more

I cannot say enough great things about Dentistry By Design! From the moment I walked in the door everyone was friendly and helpful. I'm terrified of the dentist (even getting a cleaning), but they make my visits very comfortable. My favorite part is the heated neck pillow and warm, scented towels! I highly recommend this office - you will not be disappointed. read more
