I took two of my kids here today - one did okay and the other did not. The one that did well had a…read moredecent 6 month exam. She had X-rays done (no cavities, yippie!) and given tips on how to get that one last baby tooth to come out. She also got a referral for an orthodontist. I didn't get to see much of her visit because I sat in with my younger child. With my younger child, he had X-rays done. Nothing too exciting there. I think they were called bite wing X-rays and they were done in the exam room. Simple enough. They can pull the X-rays up in the exam room. That seems pretty common for most dental offices. The cleaning and oral exam never happened however because my son just wasn't having it. He got upset and started getting tearful as well as covered his mouth. Here's where I dropped my review to 2 stars as I've continued on with this review - while I appreciated the quickness the dentist was to recognize my son's distress, he didn't attempt to try to relate to him or really talk to him. Instead he told me he would refer my son out to a pediatric dentist and gave me the reasons why. Sure, I could understand his reasoning and did not object whatsoever. I could also see that as a family dentistry, they would specialize in the fully or maybe even mostly cooperative pediatric patient. While I appreciate not traumatizing a child (and maybe even the parent) more, maybe mention that, too. Some parents might not recognize this and only understand this as being brushed off. Also, as I mentioned before, the cleaning and oral exam for my son never happened. However, looking at the "Statement of Services Rendered," I saw that my son has a charged for $43 for a "Limited oral evaluation." I'm not sure what part of this is true as I never saw any part of an oral evaluation occur. I did see readings of the X-ray occur as I was in the room and he explained areas of teeth he was looking at. But when I compare his charge to my daughter's charge of "comprehensive oral evaluation" also for $43, it seems concerning since she had a full dental exam. Further, the other dentist that saw my daughter was not wearing gloves when he was pointing out teeth and showing areas of concern (a baby tooth, etc). While I did not observe him touch her mouth or teeth without gloves on and he was using tools to point out her teeth while I was in the room, isn't it standard practice to be wearing gloves when looking in a patient's mouth? My daughter did inform me he was wearing gloves before because the gloves smelled gross. Anyway, if I could have given stars for overall staff friendliness, I would have given 5 stars as the staff was so nice. One at the front desk, Chandra, maybe(?) was very nice and I appreciated her help tremendously with finding a pediatric dentist for my son. Now I need to call and investigate this "limited oral evaluation" charge.

Confession: I stress about going to the dentist. I had a horrible experience at a different…read morepractice which made me avoid all dentists for a good three years. I was searching for a new one and Dr. Cabana came up on my insurance list of dentists and it was right down the road from my house. The office is fairly new. It's in one of the strip mall s in front of the Tega Cay Walmart. It looks a little small, but there's enough space since it's one dentist at this office. Everyone is super friendly at this office, from check-in to check-out everyone smiles. Also I've never had to wait less than five minutes. For appointments, I like the text reminders. First thing morning and late afternoon appointments fill up fast, but I haven't had a problem with scheduling them far in advance. For cleanings, they take their time with you. The hygienist always asks about any trouble spots or problems and then proceeds with x-rays and the cleaning. I like that x-rays are done at the chair. This office has music playing along with ocean noises. There's no little TV's but I never liked those previous offices. Dr Cabana will then check all of the previous work and look at any trouble spots. On my first visit, I did have a cavity and had to get a filling. Remember that bad experience, it was during a filling. I had a lot of anxiety and started crying. Here they calmed me down, made sure I was completely numb before starting. When they did start, they explained every step and made sure I was okay. I got through it and very much appreciate Dr. Cabana's bedside manner. He even fixed my bite from the previous dentist's work that was causing pain. Needless to say I am no longer afraid of the dentist and have made my six-month exams for about 2-3 years now. My husband also goes here. I highly recommend Stonecrest Family Dentistry. The care and service is top-notch.
