I am having drywall taping done in my new home in the Lafayette area. The work is being done as a…read moreside job by 2 local tapers, one of them being from Blackburn Drywall. The other is a principal of High Quality Construction in Lafayette. The work just started, so my star rating is set at "middle of the road". I have seen a jobsite work reference and the work is very good. As the work proceeds, I will update this post with the results.

We hired James, Blackburn Drywall to remodel our family room. Drywall, ceiling, and flooring, also…read moresome drywall touchup in other areas. I was very happy with the ceiling. The rest, not so much. Drywall job was just ok, but I did not complain because it was new too old. Very little effort was put into the small details, i.e. socket covers being straight. I think his workers are use to "fix and flip." We also paid James to reset a door for us. Per Anderson, this was not installed correctly by another contactor. James also told me he had a flooring guy that could refinish our hardwood floors. So, I decided to also include that. After several attempts at sanding, it was clear they were not capable of doing the job. James agreed and apologized. We decided that we would finish it ourselves. Our choice. I did not complain. I did not ask for a reduction in price. They spent a lot of time trying so I paid James exactly what he asked for, when he asked for it. Once James was completely done, he told me, "If you have any issue to let me know even if it was a month or two later." So, I did. I let him know that the door needs adjusted, maybe just shimmed at the bottom. He went off on me! Said I was trying to rip him off. Totally crazy. These are photos of what I did not complain about! FYI, I had another contractor look at the door. It took him less than 10mins to fix the door issue! If you hire James beware, he can talk a good game in the beginning, but when he is done, he is done! It was obvious when I reached out to him, he has no intent in fixing any issue. He says his reputation means the most to him and that he wants things to be right. That is not the case. He was so rude, for no reason. I really did not deserve it. Very unprofessional behavior. If he really does not want to be contacted to fix any problems after he is paid in full, then he should not offer to!!!

About a year ago we had a basement sump backup for which we called ServiceMaster Advantage of…read moreLafayette. The minor disaster required the carpet of the built-in basement be replaced. Separate crews were assigned to take out the damaged materials. ServiceMaster sent Eddie Diaz to scope the work and explain what would be done. The crew he sent about a week later, to pull out the damaged carpet, asked for entry and spent a good amount of time on the work. But it seems to be much more than assigned work that occupied their time. When they were done they departed quickly and without checking in to show me what they had done. Within a few weeks of their work, I noticed assorted items of thousands of dollars of value--ammunition, vinyl record albums from the 1960s-70s, military uniform items and insignia, CDs, electronics, and other personal property--missing from my office and the nearby closet, neither of which had any damage. I had happened to inventory many items a few weeks before their work and knew well what I had from inventory and electronic receipts, that the items were definitely gone, and that no other people had any access to the areas whence the items disappeared. I compiled a list of what I realized was missing and filed a statement with the Tippecanoe County Sheriff's office a few weeks later, after checking carefully what was missing. The detective investigated the slickie boys whose names they got from ServiceMaster, but the identified boys claimed they were never at my house, and I had no solid proof they were. In the intervening months a few other items are also missing, having not been noticed among the many items in the office area until recently needed. With highly restricted access to the area, those had to disappear the same time as the other property--no other explanation makes sense. Some lessons: Even if very busy on other activities, observe the laborers closely, frequently, randomly, and fully trust none requiring entry to your premises--especially not any low-skill, part-timers who might be unable to gain more reliable employment. So they cannot lie that they never worked at your location, photograph their government issued facial ID and their vehicle--including the license plate--before allowing them entry. Unless it is untrustworthy, any competent business will be certain to have the supervisor come by that day, when the work is done, to ensure it has been performed suitably and honestly. Other contractors do so. For the money paid, the customer has every right to expect the supervisor sending the laborers to be professional and "close the loop." We have installed a security system in the meantime. The multiple cameras would have captured the boys carrying out their stolen property. I will not call upon this business again.

I was impressed by the professionalism and attention to detail shown by Servicemaster Advantage. They met their commitments on time, got everything done that I asked for, and worked around a number of external constraints. I was even more impressed because this was a task somewhat outside their norm, but you would have never known so by how well they completed it.
