However, I would not call this place as typical Portuguese food restaurant. It is as eclectic as fun is the name (a mosquito that can be found in the part of the river). The red hair tattooed owner was super friendly answering all my questions concerning the pictures in the walls. I was curious to see if they were real ancestors or she just got those photos online to create faux family ambiance. It happens that they were real family, now overseeing what we eat from those black and white shots! This restaurant is very relaxing and calm, you can have a conversation and enjoy the food. Another thing is when you go to the bathroom and you clash with those eyes protruding the walls!!! they look so authentic. It was funscary! Food: my seafood plate was super delicious, nothing to complain about. The tomato based broth was really good. My colleague was not as happy with his meat as was more done than expected. We shared a creme brulee that was awesome too. It was a bummer that the bacalhau dish was not available. That is what I went for initially but i dont regret choosing that restaurant versus more typical Belgian options around.

Since the wife and I have really been into cocktails lately, trying to learn as much as we can, and trying new things, we decided to check them out on a Friday night. The bartender, Mica was so kind and friendly to my wife and me. We sat at the bar to watch him work, and to admittedly pick his brain when it came to ingredients. The wife tried a classic Mai Tai and I had their Cognac Safe Ticket. You can find descriptions of their house cocktails in the pictures. I absolutely loved the CST, and found it to be so delicious with it's hint of pear. We ordered a cheese plate and two more drinks, a Dill Breaker and An Apple A Day Keeps the COVID Away... Which despite the long name, was easily, without a doubt, the one of the best cocktails my wife and I have ever had! We enjoyed talking to them about their rums, especially their Trinidadian rums. They let us try some vermouths and other ingredients we and been curious about, and the bartender was so open to all our questions and provided some great conversation as well! The vibe of this place is great. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a nice date spot, or for great cocktails. We can't wait to go back!

I decided on Hemelhuys, a little gem tucked away on a pedestrian street, a stone-throw away from Hasselt's serene cathedral, St. Quintinus, and close to the town's fancy stores and great restaurants. This quaint, welcoming boutique hotel has eight spacious rooms combining modern-day comfort with old-fashioned charm. These tastefully renovated units are spread over two old stone houses connected by a small but lush garden. The short walk through this pretty garden is aptly names Chemin du Bonheur. Both owners, Ann and Liesbeth, blend discreet elegance with genuine small-town warmth, and go out of their way to make guests feel at home. And, just like the owners, the young staff is very attentive to the guests' needs and, in addition, smiles a lot -- a pleasant touch that augments one's enjoyment of the place. Breakfasts are most inviting: a selection of assorted fresh breads and bakery products, home-made jams, cheeses, fresh fruit and, for hungrier people, a variety of egg dishes. Location + charm + service + comfort + caring owners + friendly staff = compelling combination to embrace Hemelhuys, a delightful hotel of superb taste in a town that prides itself on being Hoofdstad van de Smaak (Capital of Good Taste). I will have to lie but I'd guess they serve about 400 different beers, mostly all Belgian. So if you want to try out some Belgian beers or just want to get drunk, and you are in the neighborhood this is the place to go. (Delirium, Kwak, Karmeliet,.. being my personal favorite ones) On the down side, the service sometimes can be sloppy and you will have to wait longer than at most pubs. But all these different beers are well worth the wait!
