I first visited The Little One almost 18 years ago on my first trip to The Netherlands. It is the…read moreoldest bar in Eindhoven - and probably the smallest. Spacious is definitely not a word that describes this place! However, what it lacks in space it makes up for in character. They have a selection of whiskeys/malts that would satisfy most purists. Oh, and there is a lot of "stuff" hanging all over the walls and ceiling. Like musical instruments and farming tools. In here you will not find flat panel TVs or loud music like you find in other pubs/cafés. But you will find an interesting mix of patrons and one hell of a barman - who happens to be the owner. Wil Lange knows all about service - and a lot about whiskey and cocktails. He will take good care of you while you sit and chat with the locals and visiting foreigners. I noticed recently that The Little One has a presence on the internet now. They have their own Instagram account and a Facebook fan page with quite a following of loyal fans. They may brand themselves as a speakeasy bar now, but this place will always be a dive bar to me. Don't let that prevent you from visiting a place with great atmosphere and good people.

I don't even remember where I heard about this place, but it might be the original Dutch Dive bar…read more Living up to it's name, it has room for some 10 people at the bar and maybe 15 more standing. The bar is brown and smoking is not disallowed. The bartender has been working for something like 50 years, so this guy's got stories. Stop on by, but don't expect a great crowd. The bartender from another local bar told us to check this place out, and although it ended up being a little bit of a search mission, it was well worth the detour. When we arrived they asked if we had a reservation (Sat evening). We said no, and they said that was okay, they had seats downstairs. There's a prohibition like feel meets 1920s themed mental patient/witch doctor like vibe, making you want to instagram every little thing you see. We walked past the first floor, down some stairs to a little area with couch like seats and then down to the downstairs floor. Interesting bar with lots of unique contraptions in glass underneath the actual bar, as well as a giant stuffed lion with a bandage wrapped around his head. They had a fair impressive list of cocktails, but keep In mind, none of them were cheap. The waiter did also promise to make whatever drink we liked. I ended up going with the Pisco Sour and my gf had a random drink they made which she really liked. Definitely an awesome bar...reminds me of something great you would see in Brooklyn! It looked like there were a lot of local here!

However, I would not call this place as typical Portuguese food restaurant. It is as eclectic as fun is the name (a mosquito that can be found in the part of the river). The red hair tattooed owner was super friendly answering all my questions concerning the pictures in the walls. I was curious to see if they were real ancestors or she just got those photos online to create faux family ambiance. It happens that they were real family, now overseeing what we eat from those black and white shots! This restaurant is very relaxing and calm, you can have a conversation and enjoy the food. Another thing is when you go to the bathroom and you clash with those eyes protruding the walls!!! they look so authentic. It was funscary! Food: my seafood plate was super delicious, nothing to complain about. The tomato based broth was really good. My colleague was not as happy with his meat as was more done than expected. We shared a creme brulee that was awesome too. It was a bummer that the bacalhau dish was not available. That is what I went for initially but i dont regret choosing that restaurant versus more typical Belgian options around.
