I drove up to the one recommended by some locals but it looked from the outside to be a shabby, run down brick building. I turned back and ended up at The Elms Motel - I had a parking space in front of my door, HBO to watch True Blood (in 30 minutes!), a coin-op laundry room two doors over, and a grocery store just a hundred yards away (closing in 10 minutes!). I dropped my stuff, popped over to the store for beer & veggies, made up some nice curry in my room (shh!) and watched "True Blood" (twice). Got my laundry all clean and had a fantastic night's sleep.

It was built in 2022 and still looks pretty great! Plenty of parking. The lobby and main areas are well kept. The hallway carpet on the 4th floor looks new still! The market has some options on snacks and tide me over items, but there's a target, raising canes, Wendy's, Arby's, and so much more in the area and within walking distance. The business center is a one chaired desk with computer, printer, and all you need. It's a small minimal open lobby. I like it. It's clean and stylish. The number one stand out here is the staff!!!!! My hubby is here for work and they let me get a late check out of 1:30. When i went to lobby I asked if I could watch hgtv since no one else was in the lobby and she said yes! The staff are really accommodating and this will be our go to hotel in Norfolk every time!!! Highly recommend them.

House is very cluttered, including the porch and hallways that lead to the bedrooms. Uncomfortable double bed. Bathroom needs updating. Towels skimpy, both in size and in number. I had a bad slip in the bathroom because the "stick-ons" weren't adequate to prevent slipping. Breakfasts were somewhat odd. Jello, macaroons, tomatoes, brownies for breakfast? These were side dishes and the main dishes were pancakes the first morning, omelets the second. (Owner did remember that my son was allergic to corn and provided an alternative, other than one made with corn syrup, for the pancakes. A very nice gesture.) I was attacked by their very large black lab when I entered the reception area rather than going through the back entrance. I received three bites: One on my finger which bled a lot. One on each leg. I was wearing jeans or I would have had more than just bad bruises on my legs. And, to top it all off, my husband suffered from what we are fairly sure was food poisoning, we suspect from the sausage served the first morning. (He'd had food poisoning before and the symptoms were identical.) The cost for all of this luxury was $90.00 per night. During the same vacation we paid $111.00 per night for a Hampton Inn room with two queen beds, breakfast included, in a nearby city. Next time we'll drive a little farther and stay in a nice hotel.

When you visit this hotel, you'll find there are plenty of activities including antique stores, museums, and don't forget the Norfolk Comedy Festival in the famous Johnny Carson Theatre. The reason why I stay at Hampton Inns as opposed to Holiday Inns is the amount of extras that they offer at a reasonable price. There rooms are well appointed with a microwave, fridge, coffee maker, hair dryers, and cable. You also get a USA Today, free high speed internet, swimming pool, a fitness room, light morning breakfast and a business center. What more can you ask for?
