I decided I was going to make an adventure of it though, and chose to meet my family at their cruise stops. Wings of Alaska treated me right. The flight from Juneau to Skagway was around a buck and a quarter each way, and well worth it. Flying over some of the most incredible scenery in the world in a small 10 seater was definitely a highlight. The pilot was friendly and put me in the copilots seat. Plus he agreed to take me over the glaciers instead of the bay. Nice little extra. They took good care of my carryon as well as my son's guitar. Easy to get in and out with none of the hassle of the big boys. Wings of Alaska turned my Alaska experience into quite a trip!

From getting dropped off curbside to dropping off bags at the airline, going through TSA security and finding your gate, it's all a seamless process. I'm so accustomed to giving myself time for all the above that by the time I was finished, I had nearly an hour of wait time at my gate. There is a small gift shop on the main level. I don't recall seeing food or coffee options. They may have had these. I just didn't take notice or remember seeing either options. Airlines staff were friendly and personable. What I enjoy the most about this airport is that it doesn't have the drama and over abundance of people that other major airports do. Also, downtown is about a 15-20 minute drive from the airport. Uber, Lyft and taxi services are available to get you to your destination. Again, since Juneau is such a smaller airport, getting in and out is very seamless. Something to keep in mind is that you will most likely have a layover in another airport prior to arriving at your destination. I don't see this airport being a hub. As for me, I flew direct to Anchorage then hopped on another flight direct to Denver. Overall, I was impressed. I plan on visiting Juneau again so I'm looking forward to using this airport another time. I may even use it more often after possibly becoming a Juneau/Douglas resident.

I recently flew with Alaska Airlines for the very first time!…read moreAnd what's weird is...I have completed a lot of traveling and exploring around Alaska (all with local/regional/carriers on propeller planes), yet finally, I had the opportunity to fly ALK. I took their once a day afternoon flight from here in Juneau (JNU) to Gustavus/Glacier Bay (GST). When I looked up fares online...it was pretty basic... It was the same flights, same times, same prices. $108.50 each way = $217 in total. JNU 4:03pm --- GST 4:40pm GST 5:40pm --- JNU 6:12pm With the final total of $217, I got to choose my own seat for both routes without having to pay any extras. I was able to simply pick my seat at the end of the online booking process. Again, included in the $217, I was able to bring a carryon bag and place it in the overhead compartment of the Boeing 737 Jet. No fee for this. And then, I placed my bookbag underneath the seat. I don't know if Alaska Air charges for checking in luggage? I didn't have a large suitcase, so I don't really know. I also liked how simple the booking process was on Alaska Air's website. I downloaded the Alaska Air App and appreciated how I was able to check-in for my flight 24 hours in advance without having to create a username and passcode like I've been forced to with other airlines. In the end...I'm not from Alaska, and they don't really cater to routes where I'm from in South Florida...so it was nice to be able to just check-in as a guest without any hassles. Stepping back just a moment... From Juneau Airport, it's pretty much all Alaska Airline routes. Obviously, Alaska would dominate the capitol city here in Juneau. I noticed inside the airport there was a small check-in counter for Delta, though I didn't see any departures or arrivals for them on the overhead board. It was all Alaska Air. I did observe 2 small seaplane carriers with passengers waiting in front of their ticket counters. I didn't catch the names though. While waiting at Gate #2 passing through security...I saw Alaska Air had all 6 of the Juneau Airport departure gates. There's a small seating area with enough spots to accommodate people. Towards the left hand side was a small food cafe. Another little extra...whenever I fly an airline for the first time, (although they rarely carry them anymore), I always ask for those little souvenir "wings" that they sometimes or at least used to carry around. Lol, I have a pair of wings from almost every airline. I asked the gate agents and flight attendants on both routes if they had a pair to spare and unfortunately they didn't. But...everyone I inquired with was very considerate, and smiled to me knowing those wings are cool little keepsakes and...they all happily searched for extras. So, no problem, it wasn't meant to be, but I appreciated their efforts. Finally, I had no issues with either of my flights. Granted...this Juneau to Gustavus route was literally...20 minutes flying time in each direction...so what could really have gone so badly, lol? In the end, I was happy for Alaska Airlines to be part of my National Parks journey to Glacier Bay, my 62nd NP overall. I am grateful I finally got to experience them after all these years.

I wouldn't take this airline on a regular basis, but since this is the only option that gets me out of Alaska guess I have to. Thanks for making me an hour late to Seattle, even if I was only spending the night there. And there's really no way to change your flight reservation once it's been made without being too costly, unless you fake your own death... good luck with that. Only other way to get there is a 7 hour ferry ride or to fly to anchorage and drive 15 hours (through Canada). My flight was as at 8:30am, which was a rookie error on my end. These little planes do not fly in fog and due to poor visibility I sat in the airport until 3pm where they gave up and told me to come back tomorrow and try again! Booked the same flight for the next day and came back and early in the morning it was foggy but the fog burned off by 10am and we made it. Do t bother scheduling a flight BEFORE 10am! No need to go through security/TSA. They call your name and you walk right out on the runway. Plane had 4 seats (half the plane is used for cargo). Flight was AMAZING and well worth the wait! We flew Pretty low to the ground with amazing views of this beautiful area. Views of the water and mountains. Makes you thankful to be alive!

As a former frequent flyer and fan of this airline I now advise you to steer clear if possible…read more First... don't overlook that these are multi pilot complex aircraft being operated by single pilot with a single engine. The pilots are good, the engines are reliable, but things happen. Second... woefully understaffed, and many employees display a cavalier attitude to say the least. Just Call Juneau and try getting someone on the phone if anything goes wrong. I will be flying Alaska Airlines from now on. If you don;t like TSA... get TSA pre. Save yourself a lot of heartache and money. Finally. There is no passenger screening. An angry passenger could be a big problem. Think that couldn't happen? Watch how the pilots treat the passengers before they even get on the plane... Condescending, insulting, Confrontational are words that come to mind. It's understandable as they are overworked and double as baggage handlers etc. Also smaller stations have no real senior leadership which is not a problem until there ARE problems and no one knows what to do and trust me they will refuse to contact Juneau for guidance...... Most important.... WEATHER. This is Alaska. Small light planes are not capable of doing what a 737 with two pilots and special proprietary instrument approaches can do. Alaska Airlines has no competition when it comes to safety and reliability in Southeast Alaska. You can get on the first leg of a 20 minute flight on Alaska Seaplanes and find yourself trapped on the plane for hours as they attempt to land and various airports on the route for that flight and wind up right back in Juneau. As a retired pilot I will be flying Alaska Airlines from now on. The specifics of my latest flight follow if interested. The seats on a Pilatus PC12 are not good for your back. So I bring a stadium seat with me that has back support built into it. Seaplanes does not allow carry on "bags". So understandably the pilot wanted to take that from me thinking it was a "carry on". I politely explained that I needed to sit on it for my back problems and he seemed to understand.... I thought things were fine. I sat in the most forward seat Starboard side just behind the bulkhead to the cockpit. I had my toes bent touching the bulkhead feet on the floor. There were 4 other passengers.... pretty intimate. The pilot boards and before closing the door proceeds to chew me out for having my toes up against the bulkhead which is carpeted and if you have ever flown in the front seats of any airplane I am sure you will recognize that most people touch the bulkhead with their feet. No matter I thought.... I didn't say anything, I simply pulled my feet back and complied with his rather odd demand. As we flew I wondered what could cause such an angry outburst and began to wonder about the guys state of mind to be honest. I admit I found it insulting to be singled out like that in front of other passengers as if I had done something wrong. We arrive in Sitka and I am concerned enough about this guy that I decided to watch him unload the bags to be sure he didn't;t throw mine around with the computer, cell phone etc in it. This is getting too long I going to cut to the chase. They lost my bag. From Juneau to Sitka. Which means it could then be on its way to any of their other destinations with all my prescriptions in it. The pilot had specifically rolled the baggage cart over to me personally and asked if I saw my bag there. I had said nothing so far. I said no. He shrugged. I said does this mean it is lost. He said yes. I said how is that possible? He said well stuff happens...."no one is perfect". So I said "what can we do about it". I got no response. So I went inside. For the next hour No one at Sitka would help me in any way. No one would pick up a phone and call Juneau. No one would send an e mail to dispatch and inquire about where my bag was before it ended up somewhere else inaccessible perhaps. I finally lost my patience and demanded that they do something...... Nothing happened. I went home. I spent an hour and a half on the phone mostly on hold trying to get a human being. They finally called and said they would have the bag to me by noon the next day. Unacceptable because of the prescriptions. I was able to talk them in to sending it on Alaska Airlines and I am thankful for that. I believe the pilot of the flight should be disciplined for his utterly uncaring and frankly confrontational attitude. Yeah I did finally get angry and yell at him and there was a scene I must admit.

It's a bit of a walk to the Wings Airways check in and shop- not too bad, but longer thanks to construction. Check in was easy and they can hold bags for you to pick up when you return! Great since we had about 45 minutes to explore before boarding. We got Orange/Orcas group- they have a fleet and each plane seats about 10. I'm mad at myself for not paying attention to who our pilot was- June 22- 9:30am- he was excellent! Has been flying for 13 years, very smooth take off and landing! I knew that someone gets to ride up front with the pilot and my hand shot up so fast when the question was being asked! Birthday girl- me me, pick me. lol- yes, I got front seat- right next to the pilot! Prepare to be stunned. Simply, unequivocally, utterly in awe. I lost count of how many times I said wow. Five glaciers, plus tons of smaller glaciers, jagged mountain peaks and smoothed over mountains, the waterfalls!!! The rivers!!! I felt like my entire being couldn't comprehend the enormity of what I was seeing. Alaska made me feel so small in its vastness. Reminded me how little I've seen or done. Landing at the lodge, it is directly across from Hole in the Wall Glacier. The grounds are glorious- it was buggy outside- and the gracious hosts have bug spray on a barrel head right outside the front door. Our feast was incredible- smoked salmon, caught fresh right downstream from the lodge. A family owed property, they bring in 9 additional hands to work the summer and all stay on the property- self sustained. The food- my goodness. First, I have never been a fan of salmon- but there was no way I was eating chicken at an Alaskan Lodge! The salmon was delicious- cooked perfectly. Everything was delicious- the herbed biscuit- perfection. I tried the spruce tips oil in my iced tea and promptly bought a bottle to take home! And just when you are done your meal and enjoying the atmosphere, they bring out gingersnap cookies- freshly baked. Ginger is great for your stomach, even though I was stuffed, I thoroughly enjoyed the entire cookie. Next up, our naturalist took us on a short hike and talked about the flora and fauna, about the glacier, the local plants that they use daily. I broke from the group to check out the trickle of a waterfalls at the back of the property- enjoyed the quietness of the forest & was grateful for my hoodie to keep the mosquitos at bay. Return flight was just as spectacular. Alaska stole a piece of my heart for sure. Thank you to every staff member between the Wings and the Lodge! You were all fabulous!
