Free music, and free beer? Is this heaven? Looking around the bar, enjoy the years and years of graffiti on the walls in the back of the bar. There are some really great artists in this town...and some fancy poets. The bathrooms are so full of markered writing, you could stand in there for a number of minutes just to take it in. I was impressed with the selection of crappy and not-so-crappy beer, and the service was great. The sound from the stage was great, and there was a little area where people would dance. At the recent Oktoberfest Torchlight Parade, the 'carny folk' bartenders at Fish Heads, randomly announced, "No single mixed drinks; doubles only." How thoughtful. Usually, I get to decide how much I'm drinking before a bar decides how much I'm spending. My Maker's Mark and ginger beer was $16. Last year, I paid $9 for that drink at Track 2 during the same parade. The North Side has a proud tradition of strong drinks and fair prices. You've kept the strong drinks and replaced the fair prices with the charming assumption that everyone on the parade route is a sucker. My, what a Richard move. I love a good dive bar. But for $16, I expect a rooftop view, or at least evidence that someone has recently given a damn. Less than an hour into being there, three men walked up to us and said we needed to leave because we were "causing a disturbance." When we asked what disturbance they were talking about, they refused to give us an answer and simply repeated that the "manager" wanted us out. There was no explanation, no specific behavior mentioned, and no actual reason provided. I am not someone who jumps to call anything racially motivated, but it is very hard to ignore how this situation looked and felt. We were minding our business, spending money, and showing respect, yet we were treated like a problem for simply existing in the space. The way it happened felt targeted and completely unprofessional. If this is how they treat paying customers, especially those who do not fit their preferred demographic, I cannot recommend this place. It was uncomfortable, disappointing, and left all of us with a bad taste in our mouths. I hope the establishment takes a hard look at how they handle and respect all customers, because this experience was unacceptable.
