Hidden down by St Kessogs Church, you'll find Deli Ecosse. And for that, you'll count yourself lucky. We wouldn't have found this wonderful deli-cafe if it weren't for the recommendation from the organiser of the Callander jazz and blues fest. Thank you, Graham. - What ensued was a heavenly lunch!
Hungry and just finished our set, we headed in. The welcome was a genuinely warm one and there was a cheery, homely feel; chalkboards with specials adorned the walls, a cabinet of plump, fresh cakes. Boy, deciding on lunch was quite possibly the hardest decision I'd made all week. There was so much choice; with sandwiches, soups and salads. But, after much a 'hum' and a 'haw', it had to be the smoked salmon and scrambled egg on toast. Breakfast in the morning? No, no, no. - Not at Deli Ecosse. Here, breakfast is an all-day affair and very much encouraged! Why, I don't mind if I do.
I ate, quite possibly, the best afternoon brunch. If not, then it's a sure-fire contender. With fresh, tasty salmon and creamy, perfectly-seasoned eggs, Deli Ecosse was a one-way ticket to brunch heaven. I've had similar dishes before only to be presented with salmon and eggs on toast. But Deli Ecosse mixed them just right. The result was the perfect ratio of salmon to egg and a real mix of both the flavours. I ate every morsel and quashed the urge to lick the plate.
All avid brunch-ees know that brunch is best ended with something sweet. So, I just had to have a slice of cake...They looked far too good to refuse! Cue yet another tricky foodie decision to make; the dairy free carrot cake or the gluten free ginger cake? This time round, the apple and sultana cake won me over. The flavours were delicious and it had just the right amount of sweetness, making for a delicious afternoon treat. If I were to be unnecessarily picky, I'd mention the slightly burn edge but that's insignificant because it was a truly lovely cake.
During our stay, we also had a quick look at the deli-items for sale around the cafe. They've got a nice wee selection but if you love deli-browsing, they have a much larger deli on the main street which has a better selection. In terms of value, our lunch was really reasonable and it was nice to be welcomed so warmly. Deli Ecosse is quaint, unassuming and exudes genuine warmth, with both quality and freshness in its ingredients. I'm looking forward to my next visit to Callander...I think I'll be back for lunch! read more
