I've always loved salsa dancing and decided I finally wanted to take a class to learn the steps rather than just fly in and out of turns and hammerlocks. My boyfriend and I have been to 2 of of Del Campo's beginning salsa lessons and while I am naturally loving it I was surprised to hear my boyfriend is having fun and likes it as well. Each drop-in beginner lesson begins with the basic step and a refresher on how to turn to help keep returning people sharp get new people moving. After practicing that, we learn a new move and practice some more rotating partners. (You don't have to switch partners if you don't want to.) The staff at Del Campo is friendly and make the lesson fun. They are there to teach and help you if you have any questions or need practice. So far we've learned the "sweetheart" and "cross body turn." I can't wait till our next lesson and would consider continuing to the intermediate level and taking more classes later. read more

Mike Del Campo is hilarious! The most important thing in a dance class is the instructor, and Mike is great. He has tons of helpful tips to teach you some of the finer points of dancing, and so many jokes that its hard to keep your posture while laughing. I bought a groupon for 8 salsa classes for my girlfriend and I, and it's a really good experience for salsa dancers of all levels. We're beginners, and although I have a little experience, it helps to have them go over the basics each time in the beginner lessons before jumping the new moves. They recommend people rotate parteners to get more experience, which is a smart move, but if you want to just hang out with your partner and do your own thing you can do that too. The space is a little small for the class size, so you have to be mindful of where you're dancing, but that's probably just good practice for real dance floors which are often more crowded. read more

Took the intermediate class. I was twenty minutes late so I imagine I missed the warm-up. Learned a lot of choreography with female styling built in. Some classes don't give you a lot of time to practice (especially with music) but this class had the perfect balance. Del Campo Dance is more than just the studio which shares space with the Sacramento Academy of Dance. It's really Mike Del Campo (with his wife Gina riding shotgun) introducing Sacramentans to salsa dancing (and some other forms of ballroom dancing) with plenty of humor, patience and style. Mike could be a stand-up comedian, he's a funny guy with his routines down pat as he leads dance neophytes through the ugly duckling stages of partner dancing until they're ready to be released as funky swans into the local dance clubs in town. Mike runs the fun beginners' salsa classes at the Ballroom on Folsom Blvd every Monday night, and the intermediate salsa class directly after that. He also gives a beginning salsa lesson at Harlow's every Sunday night at about 7pm. And he teaches beginning to advanced salsa classes as well as private lessons at his studio. So I guess he's Mr. Salsa in Sacramento. Some of Mike's lines: Salsa, where the men drive and the ladies ride. This is salsa, it's legal to grind your hips. Men, lift your hand up and let the ladies twirl, we all know there's nothing ladies like better than twirling. All bad dancing is the leader's (guy's) fault. The studio itself is on the second floor of a complex across from Town & Country shopping center, and you'll bump into other dancers including ballet tykes and waltz duos. I have been taking Mike's intermediate salsa class for about 3 months now and enjoy it very much. Salsa is a dance where the man (leader) has to get the pattern right or things go south and the woman (follower) cannot do her thing to look good. Mike provides insight as a man into the man's moves which I find very helpful, since my past dance instructor was a woman. We both feel like we are learning a lot and are excited to get out to the clubs to practice our new moves! Nobody puts baby in the corner- not even Mike Del Campo. A special Yelper and I got a Living Social deal for six salsa classes and have made it to two beginning lessons so far. As previous reviewers have stated, each class starts out with a review of basic steps, and then a lesson on one or two combinations. You are encouraged to switch partners every so often but can stay with your date if you brought one. Mike always has a couple of jokes up his sleeve and is an upbeat yet patient teacher. I thought I would feel kind of cheesy coming to a salsa class but it's definitely laid-back and fun. The beginning classes are well-suited for people of all skill levels! read more

Del Campo Dance Studio has moved into a new space right around the corner from their old location. They are now located at 2729 Fulton Ave in Sacramento. The new place has a lot more room and it has a GREAT dance floor! They also have a couple additional rooms for private lessons, so the teachers can be much more flexible with their teaching availability. Visit their website for an updated schedule... they are now offering beginning, intermediate, and advanced salsa classes and every month they have a featured ballroom dance series. Del Campo Dance really is the best studio for Latin dances in the area... you can't find better instructors anywhere! My girlfriend and I took a chance on a living social deal for a 8 salsa dance lesson punch card, and suffice it to say, I'm enjoying it so far. Mike and Amber that teach salsa on Tuesdays and Wednesdays are great at what they do. They keep the class lively, don't go too fast, and are funny to keep things light for us folks that are not salsa black belts (as Mike jokes). They offer other types of lessons, and what is interesting is for us to watch a group of youngsters that are probably 12 years or younger doing ballroom dancing before our class on Tuesdays. Mike and Amber do a great job teaching the guys and the gals. Mike is especially good when he lets us know that salsa is all about ladies showing off and he does somethIing "sexy", then he makes sure us guys know that we are driving. =) I recommend Del Campo to anybody, especially if you are leery about learning how to dance, since there are quite a few single folks wanting to learn of all ages. read more

Mike and Gina are fantastic instructors. I was a little apprehensive about taking dance instruction but these guys made it so easy. Mike is really funny which helped me to relax and made it easier for me to pick up the moves. After just one hour of instruction I could do a few basic salsa dance moves and had a great time showing my friends. It made me want to keep going and after a couple months I was very confident on the dance floor. I can't say enough good things about Mike and Gina. I'm just glad that I live near Sacramento so I can learn from them. read more
