What a great experience! Definitely expensive but they take care of everything. They tied a small tube to one of ours for our cooler to float along with us. The parking lot has a couple port-o-potties and plenty of parking spots. They drive you to the put in spot and then back after about a 3 hour float. Be prepared - there is a short, steep walk to the river, and coming back up is longer and steep, but not terrible. We can't wait to go next year! read more

The river water is exceedingly clean and wildlife is all over the river. Last year we saw a bald eagle. And they have the good tubes with no bottoms (unless you ask. I (female, 49) brought my two daughters ages 10 and 11 on this trip and it was perfect! The family that runs it is sooo nice. Check in was easy, getting out of the river was easy and the worker was even waiting for us at the exit point so he could help us carry the cooler and tubes up to the car. First, call and ask about the water level to see how much walking, if any, you'll be doing in the river because many parts are very, very shallow. Second, prepare to have your butt and back slammed into rocks on the parts where the water runs fast and it's shallow. Third, it is very expensive and I don't know what the money is for. Everyone was very nice and I took my nephew and they carried our tubes and our cooler up and down the hill and they met us with a towels at the end. The van drivers were very nice and friendly. It was nice to be totally taken care of you just leave your car and they take you in a van to the water is totally beautiful when we went the levels were a bit low but they did let us know ahead there would be places where we may need to walk and pick up our tubes-you can definitely get a work out going back up the hill on your way back! You really get what you pay for! At first I thought it was a little bit expensive but after taking a trip it was well worth it! These guys are amazing, the service was excellent and that's what you want on the trip like this. We got there there was a nice field with porta potty's and a gentleman explained everything we needed to know, they fitted us for life vests they were super friendly and helpful. Carried our cooler they gave us a nice ride to the put in point. The one thing you should know as we had someone with an arthritic knee, is that it is pretty steep going down to the water just be prepared to take it slow. The young people that were there to meet us and give us our tubes and set us up and helped us were also super friendly and very helpful. The river was awesome... Peaceful lovely I only wish people wouldn't play the radios because we saw a bald eagle and could hear it if that radio wasn't so loud! When the ride was done you pull off at a bridge and again it's a little tricky to get up to the road, we had to help our friend up the steep path with many roots... If you just ask for help you should be OK. They even gave us towels! Another small thing which maybe I imagined but I thought they had the heat on low in the van on the way back rather than the air conditioning. Everyone was wet from swimming in a little chilly, all I can say is this is so much better than the other company I went with last year and I'll definitely be coming back! read more

My gf and I wanted to try a new experience for our 1'st yr anniversary. The booking was pretty easy with text reminder. Everyone there was very nice and helpful. so much fun. they were ready and waiting at the end. They even helped us at the end back up the hill. Be prepared for a bit of climbing that adds to your adventure. Thoughtful enough to have a chair to give my gf breaks. I would recommend a rope attached to the trees along the path. That may help. Definitely worth repeating. We went on an extremely hot day, it was SUPER busy but alll of the employees are really nice. Booking/checking in was easy, the ladies gave us some fun facts about the historical town the river is in while driving. They give you an extra tube for you cooler and strap it in for you, which is great. The river was nice, water was clean, DEFINITELY CHECK THE WATER LEVELS BEFORE YOU GO (there's a link on the website). The water was at 235 CFS when we went, If it was any lower I doubt you'd be able to float. They had us to 1/2 way since the water was low, the current was almost non-existent, it took about 3 hours. My whole family was left standing on the side of the road while the person who came to pick up, drove past us and sat in vehicle. We were wet and tired after climbing the hill alone and she was sitting in the SUV. When we were finally acknoweleged, the person started cleaning out the trunk space to fit the rubes, that we loaded into the vehicle for her before we were offered towels. Other than the ride, pretty much every thing we paid for, we had to do ourselves. Ourselves included the birthday child with us. The only reason we were acknowleged was because we went and sought her out parked and hiding on the other side of the parking lot after at least 15 minutes of standing there waiting and wondering and realizing she was there the whole time. We planned this outing as our almost-10-year old's birthday adventure gift. He had never been tubing before, and was so excited he woke up before the sun was even up. We purchased our tickets online, which was very convenient. We selected a 9 am departure time. The website recommends you show up 10-20 minutes earlier than your departure time. For us, this meant leaving our house very early at 7 a.m. We arrived around 8:30, had no trouble finding the hidden location via Google Maps GPS. The company is located at a pseudo-farm with horses, chickens, dogs & geese. A couple (the owners?) greeted us, told us where to park, but their reception gave us the impression we were way too early. We slathered on our sunscreen, got our gear ready to go, and were told the check-in person would be there shortly. Additional patrons arrived & prepared, but the check-in person didn't arrive / begin the process until around 9:15. Long story short... we waited... and waited... and waited... it was so disorganized. By the time everyone was checked in, the tubes and passengers loaded & delivered to the site... we didn't get floating until 10:20, almost 2 hours after our arrival. I am a patient person, but I don't think the website should instruct patrons to arrive early if staff isn't going to arrive early as well. We would have enjoyed leaving our home for the 90 minute drive another 30 minutes later... With that said, our moods were still good. The employee that drove us to the site was very personable & friendly, as was the other employee (Christopher) that helped us with our tubes. We selected the "full" vs. "half" float, and it took us 3 hours to complete the trip. The river was cold, but the adventure was fun. There were slow sections, and some rapids; we never had to stand up or walk. The river was clean & the scenery beautiful. We saw 5 ducks, 1 heron, 2 bald eagles & a bat. Not sure what the bat was doing flying around mid morning?! Once we arrived our final destination, we called for pick up & the van arrived 10 minutes later with towels and quick delivery. All & all a fun time, memorable day. My advice to the company would just be to get the check in process more streamlined & organized. read more

I took my boyfriend here for his birthday, and it was his best birthday yet... says the boyfriend. It was definitely worth the two hour drive each way to get to this place. It's actually pretty easy to find if you do your homework. The address they provided directed us straight to their location (I used maps on my iPhone). The tip of looking for a black mailbox with yellow numbers helped, it says 617 right on it. This place is someone's home which makes the experience that much more special. They have tons of animals you can interact with and the people here are super friendly and personable. Chris, Danielle and Sarah are very informative, funny and kind. Part of why this is an awesome experience is how laid back and relaxing the entire journey is from check in, to the river, to even back to your car. I think there are one too many people who have complained about how it takes them a while to get to the river. There is a check in process people... that takes time. Just like if you are waiting in line to purchase your ticket to enter into six flags... there is a process. They have streamlined that process as much as they could and they try and get you down to the river as soon as possible but you have to wait for everyone at your time to be ready to go. The drive to the drop off location was about 15 minutes or so. The van was super clean and air conditioned. The walk down to the river could be tricky to some people, especially when you are carrying down gear but just take it slow and think about where to place your foot and you should be good. Don't be afraid to ask for help. The walk down was maybe 3 minutes at most. The river itself was a lot of fun. We did go when it rained two days before, just an fyi. There are some parts on the river where the water level is really low, which is mostly passed the halfway point. I probably had to get out of the tube and walk maybe twice for about 20 feet. There are some minor rapids throughout the trip which makes it a ton of fun. Just make sure to pick your butt up or lay on your stomach with your feet picked up. There will be times where you hit a rock. It really doesn't hurt that much, if anything it just startles you. We spent about 6 hours on the river (we were with the 11 am group), and got on the river a little after 12. We did stop and have lunch about halfway through, there is a nice spot after the halfway point near a stream with sand on the right hand side if you wanted to stop and have lunch. We also stopped a lot to swim in the deeper parts of the river. If you are spending your whole day on the river just be conscious of time and where you are on the river. Towards the end the river does get real slow, just keep that in mind for time. Definitely bring a cooler with snacks and drinks. They will provide a tube for your cooler or you can purchase one of those inflatable tubes with a cooler built in at Walmart. Also, make sure you wear shoes (not flip flops) that can get soaked. I would bring an extra pair of shoes or sandals to switch into when you get back to your car. Similar to other posts, the nice day on the River was sort of washed away by A) the ridiculous hike at the end and B) the lack of any professionalism by the young lads helping us out. A simple "stay to the right" would have prevented my party of 14 from taking a wrong turn on the path out, making a normally ridiculous hike with coolers and gear into something miserable. They should really invest in a few signs like "get off the river here" and "this way to the van" instead of making the tubers figure these thing out for ourselves. 2 stars because the driver out (Hannah I think her name was) was actually very nice and enjoyed showing off the sites around Conway. This was a great experience! This was our first time tubing on the Deerfield River... and since it was an occasion to celebrate our daughters 13th Birthday... we wanted to make sure all went smoothly. The staff was extremely friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating and made us feel at ease. Don't be fooled by the not-so-usual setting... complete with a horse, pony and guinea hens.... They even handled a leaky tube situation we had on the river... met us with a new one! Welcomed with a basket of dry towels at pick up. Everyone had a great time... even 4 13 year old girls!! The activity itself was fun. The four of us clung together and rode the whole way down. There were points where it was incredibly slow and we found ourselves having to paddle with our hands. Watch out for rocks and low points in the river! Rocks sneak up on you and hit you in the butt! Also in the shallow water it was easier to just walk instead of floating. And watch out at the end when you get out of the water! The rocks are SLIPPERY. We fell several times. I'd say it was fun until we got to the end. The rocks were painful and it was not fun walking up a steep hill to get to the truck. And the people who run this place... not the warmest of people! I would love to go tubing again, but definitely with a different company. Still definitely a really fun time and I'm happy we tried it out. read more

The place was a bit difficult to find since it was in a field and parking lot. Service was helpful but providing an inner tube is about all you get. They did provide a 15 minute ride to the river and back but for the most part is is costly for a group of four. There are portable bathrooms but no place to change out of your wet clothes. It was a relaxing time on the river. May do it ourselves next time!!! read more

Great experience, very well run and the employees were very respectful and helpful in everything. They supplied everything down to the rope to tie down the cooler I brought, they even carried my cooler down and up from the river. The only downside was climbing up a huge hill after tubing but its to be expected when doing outdoor activities. Great job guys read more

This was a fun experience! The river was clean and relatively warm and there were lots of places to stop and have a snack. There were many places where your butt hit the rocks. I once tubed at a place that strapped a piece of plywood to the center of the tube. This may be something DR Portage should consider. We got in the water about 2 pm. Perhaps earlier in the day would be better if you catch the damn release to avoid some of the butt rock bumps. In an approx 3.5 mile run it tooks us 4 1/2 hours to tube. We saw a bald eagle on our way down. The place does not have any signs and it looks like you are driving to the middle of nowhere. Well you kind of are. But the GPS brought us straight to the house where there was a tent set up to check us in. After you get checked in it is about a 20 min ride to the drop off point. We checked in at about 1 pm and we got into the water about 2 pm. Keep that in mind if you are on a clock. At the end they greeted us with clean towels which was a really nice touch! The ride back was under 10 mins and we were on our way home. The staff was friendly especially the guy with the longer hair from Cali. I do recommend a hard cooler and water shoes! The tube for your cooler is an awesome idea!!! Great day trip not far from NH, VT Boston MA or Hartford CT! read more

Okay yelp-ers, not sure why more of you aren't reviewing this awesome find - you should! We took advantage of the Deerfield River Portage today and had an AMAZING time as a family. I'm so overwhelmed with the awesomeness at a reasonable price that I don't know where to start. There aren't a lot of easily located river tubing experiences in the MA area. We looked into northern New England but the time in the car and mandated overnight stay were a huge deterrent. We wanted some place reasonably close by but still a fun adventure and boy did we find it! To start, be sure to plug in the exact street address to your GPS - we got lost trying to find this place using Waze. Second, the family that runs this business understands customer happiness and appreciation. This is nothing fancy, although anyone looking for an afternoon of a river tubing experience isn't likely to be expecting fancy. I loved driving into the location and seeing chickens roaming freely, horses grazing in the field and rescue dogs barking their welcome (tip - bring them treats. Not many folks do and they are bound to be your friends if you do!). Just awesome. We signed the typical waivers, asked to use the clean, very family friendly facilities and we were off. Danielle talked through the process on the ride to our launch site. There are two options, with no price difference between the two. One being the full river tube, the other dropping a the half-way point. To say that Danielle knows her stuff is an extreme understatement. Ask her a ton of questions and listen to her advice. She knows this stuff. The water levels/currents were on the lower side so we chose the half river tube. She literally walked us and our tubes through the hike, right to the water. She was so amazing with our 7 and 9 year old kids, giving practical outside advice, passing along words of wisdom that her grandfather taught her. Once Danielle was sure we had all of the information we needed and were set to go, we were off. The tubing experience itself was so pristine and relaxing. We never saw another person along the river! We brought a cooler and paused about halfway down (thanks to Danielle's spot on navigation advice) to enjoy our lunch on the river. There were certainly parts of the tubing that were more exciting than others but it is what is to be expected. The end was very, very slow - we ended up paddling and water walking a bit of the distance. But, we connected and so totally enjoyed ourselves. We saw a bald eagle, some herons and a bunch of other birds and ducks along the way. To the negative nelly that griped about a suburban with a dog smell, I could not disagree more. I found everything to be clean, orderly and neat - honestly, well beyond the money we paid for the day. You definitely need decent water shoes for this adventure. A cooler, packed with normal essentials is smart. Pay attention to water levels - the lower the levels, the more you are likely to walk through the water. We were lucky, having taken Danielle's advice and going the half-river run, to only really walk through the initial area and bumped around the rest but there wasn't a lot of room for error if the water levels dipped. Nothing this organization could have done - just an understanding for people who want to do this. This was an amazing family experience that we will be back to experience again and again! We used this service yesterday for a truly perfect day on the river. We drove out to Deerfield (a little less than two hours) and were met by three of the fine employees of the DRP at the "drop spot". Parked our cars, lathered on our sunscreen, and gave the folks $55 each to buy our tubes. Then we piled into some big old vans/trucks and were driven 20 or so minutes up the road. Totally worth it, because if you were to drive yourself, how would you get back to your car at the end of the ride? Anywho, we got our tubes, and the folks set us up with some tubes and rope for our coolers as well. Then we got in the water for four hours of awesome tubing naturey heaven. Not a power line in sight, and a lovely current carried us through picturesque scenes. No one brought their phones, and it was nice to be tuned out for a bit. The water is unbelievably clean and clear! We had a wonderful time, and we're looking forward to making this an annual pilgrimage! Random notes: -SPF 70 for the win -if you find two pairs of sunglasses or a pair of high-waisted jean shorts, can you get those back to me? -Don't litter! This is a business that two woman do together. They pick you up in there old Suburban, very bad dog smell! With tubes. For $30.00 pp. You pay $50 pp up front and after they give you back $20.00. So here is how it works. you go and park there and they pick you up with tubes. You buy the tube from them and the ride up the river, then when you are done they buy back the tube from you. So it's really $30.00 but if the tube pops or something then it costs you $50.00. Now that I know how it works I will buy my own tube and take two cars. I think what they are doing is good cash only business, but the ride up there in that old smelly truck was not that great. I wouldn't do it again, now I know how it works, but if you don't know the area and you don't want to buy tube then go for it. We enjoyed it....until the end. We had lots of laughs and fun for the first 3/4 of the trip, even while hitting our bottoms on rocks in the shallow area! However, the last 1/4 of the trip, when we reached 'still water' (it was literally still), we had to paddle hard to move. It took soooo long to move and we were tired at this point. We finally reached the bridge where you get out. OMG, it was dangerously slippery! And we had water shoes! The water was also mucky and unpleasant. We saw crab/scorpion creatures on the bottom and could not get out fast enough. But was a challenge trying not to fall while getting out on rocks that were like walking on marbles and holding a big tube! If they could end the trip before this last 1/4 ending, we would have enjoyed our experience. But it ended on a very bad note and unfortunately, we won't be back. read more

They drive you down to the river, help you get all set up, a tube per person and another tube just for your cooler! The river is so peaceful you feel like you left the rest of the world behind. We brought that up to the staff and was told yeah that needs to be fixed . We were given a ride to the location ,the man handing out the tubes was great and they did help us down to the water . They fail to tell you that you climb down a steep slippery rock hill and definitely fail to tell you that when you get off at the "3 hour ride " you have to climb up an extremely steep uphill climb . Then we waited over 20 min for a van that could support our group of 11 . When we were told the vans run "all the time" . The price is towards the higher side for this unorganized establishment . The water was so warm, the trip was amazing and overall a great time. They give you a nice shuttle down, the shuttle back took a bit of time but they had warm towels to dry off with. Overall this was a better experience than the Soco river. Their headquarters were quaint. There are horses, chickens, and ducks. If you use the restroom there is a little window where the horses can come up for a treat (they encourage you to feed them). It was cool and different. Our float time was 1 pm, we didn't leave headquarters until 2. They provide floats or will pump up the ones you bring. The cooler floats are an extra inner tube that you shove over the cooler you bring (it works well unless you hit a rock, then it may tip over). The number you can call for how high the river is that day said 650. MOST of the river was very shallow. We did not have to walk but we could easily touch the bottom while in our tubes for most of the float. We had to get everything out of the water many many times (butts up!). We had tied our tubes together and got stuck on rocks a lot, which took some coordination to get unstuck. Once there was a hidden rock and one of the tubes flipped over. The passenger was okay but scraped her shoulder and tore her swimsuit. The river was BEAUTIFUL. We did see a bald eagle multiple times which was awesome. They people running the operation didn't seem very organized but we're nice and provided us towels when the picked us up. Last thing, it's a steep hill to the drop in point and a steep hill to get back out. Overall, fun experience. read more

Great time! Plenty of parking, port o johns when you arrive. They take you up to the river in a large comfortable van. Staff was very accommodating, responding to questions via text. They explain everything to you. A little bit of a downhill to get to launching point, wear sneakers or water shoes but flip flops might be dangerous. River was not too high but we didn't have to get out and climb or walk. Keep an eye on the water height, makes a difference in your experience. At the end, there was a very steep hill to climb (another reason for sneakers or water shoes). Staff picked us up immediately and brought us back to our car. Great day!
