I haven't written a review in a while but I actually retrieved a lost Yelp password just so I could write this one and give Dedham Veterinary Associates the praise they deserve. My old lady cat was very sick, and on two occasions this year Dedham Vet (and Dr. Tinkham in particular) were just incredible. The entire staff at this practice were so helpful, knowledgeable, kind, and prompt. My cat was a difficult patient and they handled her with patience and humor. When it came time to make a difficult decision about her care, Dr. Tinkham was 100% compassionate and offered me options and empathy throughout the process. I have never had a better experience with a vet. I will absolutely be taking all of my future animal pals to this practice, and I recommend Dr. Tinkham without reservation. read more

We found a new vet after our experience here. Our 6 month (adopted) puppy was healthy. We took him in for routine vaccinations, and they requested a fecal sample. His stools were normal, but tested positive for giardia. The vet may not have fully understood the implications of the treatment - it wiped out his gut biome and left him with terrible diarrhea that has led to serious weight loss. The response to our concerns was tepid: A prescription for probiotics, which provided limited results, and some cans of prescription dog food. We're so sad and frustrated with the situation. read more

Terrible customer service. I'm not sure how much they really care about animals. I have been waiting for a callback regarding a hard lump on my cat's back for almost 3 weeks. I've called back for updates 3 times and always told I'll get a callback with NO follow through. This could be precious time to prevent or catch if my cat has serious medical condition and this vet DOES NOT CARE. I was referred here by my regular vet and requested a referral to another practice that has been much more responsive and have my surgery consultation booked. If you are looking for high-pressure, used car lot sales tactics, this is the vet for you. Every appointment has been focused on unwanted up-selling. Today, was the final straw. Brought my healthy labradoodle in for two needed shots. Was placed into a filthy exam room and when the vet assistant came in, she started with the selling. I held firm to the two shots we came in for. The vet then came in and started to examine our dog. I told her that the appointment was just for shots. She said that they couldn't give them without an exam. This is greed pure and simple. If humans can get Covid vaccines without an exam, so can dogs. I got up and left. I won't be going back and I strongly recommend you keep looking for a vet with integrity and one whose main aim is not to fleece you. read more

This is the most expensive vet in the area. By far. If the Vet is the one to see your pet then there's an upcharge, and it's not your choice if she comes in. They constantly try to upsell on things that pets don't need (based on other vets). I called around to get prices on neutering my dog and they wanted to charge me $1600! Ridiculous! For many years, even before she was at DVA, Sandy Higgins was my dogs vet. I was both sad and upset when she made the move to the Buzzards Bay location, but I my dog has been seen by both Dr Gillecee and Dr Auerbach and they were both very thorough and kind but when Dr Auerbach introduced herself as Naomi Auerbach I knew she'd be the same kind of vet that we were accustomed to with Sandy. What a wonderful staff and facility! We were referred here for surgery for our dog Rosco, and had an amazing experience from the very first phone call. The doctors, client liaison, and nurses were all so friendly, answered all of our questions, and you could tell they truly love their patients. They all made accommodations to handle Rosco's anxiety during such a stressful procedure, and we felt totally comfortable leaving him in their hands. They provided a detailed estimate of the charges and stayed right in that range (which was VERY fair, especially compared with other clinics). We cannot recommend them highly enough! read more

Three strikes, yer out- that's my personal philosophy anyways in regards to any business. Strike number three happened several months ago, so I went out and found new vet. I feel like this yelp review could be very long, and it would serve as therapy for me in order to get the frustration out- but no one likes to hear and respond effectively to a disgruntled customer's complaint... including the director of the vet clinic, and the lead vet which I did approach prior to my last visit visit. Here's the highlight reel: 1. I feel like I'm a cash-cow whenever I walk through the door. If my healthy dog's in good health- I should consider buying this vaccine or this supplement to make him even healthier. Beware the upsell. 2. If my dog's not healthy, such as his "hurt paw", they cannot help me unless I spend even more money on costly tests. Now, I understand that health care is expensive, and would not begrudge any amount which would improve the health of my dog. But $100 to tell me that I have the option to spend more? Really? Beware the "i can't fix this unless you give me more $". 3. As in the other post, my dog disappeared behind a door for some kind of "special evaluation". We left, and upon his next visit, we discovered now that my 90 pound dog is apprehensive around the vet. That's too much of a coincidence. He's too big to be scared of the vet. Scared dogs act in unpredictable ways, I can't have that. Now I need to undo what someone else has exposed him to. Beware the back room. 4. With the office visit, a complimentary nail trim is supposed to be included. Due to the dog's anxious state of mind, it was not in the best interest for him to be put under any more stress. The vet agreed and suggested that I set up another appointment with the nurse. Of course, they'll charge me for the second visit, even though I paid already with the first visit. Beware the "already paid for that". 5. No matter how much I try, I still feel as though they are actively trying to lose or up-sell me with medical jargon as their tool. The problem is I understand much of it. "No, I don't need a leptospirosis vaccine." I'm aware of leptospirosis and have an idea about it's rate of occurrence. Beware of the medical jargon, and what the data really shows. 6. Last, but certainly not least- I recognize that veterinary care is a business. Like all businesses there is a decorum and a response which is appropriate, the attending vet needs to exude professionalism and calm- . However, the other side of this coin is that people who visit the vet's office, need something for a loved pet. They often are in a place of emotional distress or concern. A warm response, one that is removed from the business aspect of the service would be greatly appreciated. A genuine interest, a genuine smile, a genuine light-hearted conversation would be great. Staff at the office could learn from Sheila, the receptionist. She's the best staff that they have. read more

I absolutely love this place. They are super understanding and help in anyway they can. Especially for someone like me that has a bit of anxiety especially when her dog seems hurt. I call and ramble on about what's wrong with my dog. But they calm me down give their opinion on what to do which is awesome. My dog Matty sees Dr. Gilleece and he enjoys her as much as a dog does when they are get poked I'm sure and being at the vet's. But I probably wouldnt change vets unless I had to like if I moved to far away like out of state. These people are awesome! read more

Having moved to Boston from outside the area, and having 2 cats and a dog, I somehow found myself making an appointment at this Dedham practice. Now I've been going there for a year, I must say I'm very happy indeed. It's a well kept, clean and spacious vets. The techs are very good and the vets themselves (4 in total I think) also seem great - I've only met 2 so far, since I decided to stick with one rather than bounce between them. They are attentive (call before for a reminder and call afterwards if necessary), and seem skilled (our kitten's spay was very well done). They do seem a bit pricey, although I'm not sure what they are like in comparison to others - but I do feel it's worth the money. I've never heard anything bad about them secondhand (like for the Angell). So I'd recommend them fully. read more

The pet care here is nothing to complain about. Service is good, the place is clean, and my pets do just fine. But it's the single most expensive place I've ever been to. And of course, as they will tell you, it's YOUR responsibility to evaluate the risks and determine which recommendations to act on. Well I acted on the recommendations (all of them) and walked out paying $694 for my two healthy dogs. One needed a medication for his nose, but was otherwise fine. I already had the medicine at home, so NO that wasn't part of this obscene cost. Are they charging more for their services? Not really - except that my prior vet always cut me a discount if I brought in multiple pets at a time. They don't do that here. They also seem to charge more for "senior" pet appointments - even though there seems to be a la carte pricing for any special "senior" tests that are recommended or required. So is anything extra included in the exam that has a "senior" pricing premium? It doesn't appear so. I pushed back on a couple of recommendations (bordatella vaccine for dogs that are never boarded) and they continued with what I would call a hard sell. I'm debating whether or not to continue visiting this practice, but it's going to take some time to compare other places. I normally don't complain about vet pricing - I know it can be costly - but I've just never seen anything quite like this. read more

0 stars . Enough said. Would never recommend any one to this vet. First reason everyone we encountered at Dedham Vet was extremely rude and very short. Second reason they have there brand on everything so your going to pay a premium rate to have there label on any medications your dogs might need. We paid over $500 for each dogs yearly shots that includes there highly recommended (non needed) extra boosters and such. lastly this was the most impersonal vet I have been to. No follow up after a visit just postcards and junk emails reminding you to get more boosters and shots. You can pay half the price and get people that truly listen at Banfield Pet Hospital. They will even call to make sure your pets doing well after a visit. Dog lovers beware Dedham Vet As. Is not the vet you want to try! read more

I am very surprised to read the negative reviews. I have been bringing my 70lb dog Maya to DVA for about 3 years now and have no complaints. I actually switched to DVA because my previous Vet was even more expensive. Healthcare for you animal is not cheap. You will be hard pressed to find a Vet that will not charge an office visit fee every time you walk in the door. The facilities are expensive to maintain and to offer good care you have to pay for it. Yes, sometimes it is frustrating but having an animal is expensive. If you want cheap care go to a cheap facility. I have found through my experience their office visit and Urine analysis tests are a fair market value, if not cheaper. What is most important to me is that when I bring my dog through the door she has no hesitation or fear- and this is true at DVA. She happily returns time after time and I am always impressed that she lets the Vets prod and poke her- this is because they know how to handle animals and it make her feel comfortable. Also, they do not need to send your dog out-of-house (like many vets) in order to do more complicated procedures. They have the expertise and specialties in the building- no strangers doing surgery on your dog. And, just because they offer you dig food and tick replant doesn't make them bad people. They are just doing their job and you can always say no thank you like I do! read more

This is an excellent and caring vets office. I have taken my yorkies here several times, and I have always been very impressed with the professionalism, care and also the organization of the business. Lola my 4 pound yorkie needed to have a badly broken leg fixed. I really appreciated that the vet who worked on her did not rush me through the consultation (it was Dr Henry) and he made me feel very comfortable that she would be in excellent hands. read more

I would never recommend this practice. I had to use them because my regular Vets office was closed. At first glance I thought they were OK but almost $800.00 later my opinion had dramatically changed. Not only did they withhold information about test results they also failed to recognize that my cat was having an adverse reaction to an injectable antibiotic they gave her. Beware of a drug called Covenia it can be very dangerous for some animals. There are far safer drugs then this one. I thought I was going to lose my precious kitty but now under the care of my regular Vet she is recovering nicely. read more

We had two bad experiences with this animal clinic. I would not recommend them to any cat owner. The first time was an emergency where our Maine Coon had bleeding nails due to a misstep he did which left him hanging on the edge of a shelf. The vet would not let me come in with my kitty, but instead disappeared with him behind a door so I could not see what he was doing. When he came back my kitty's feet had stopped bleeding, but the vet said he had not done anything but clean the wounds. They surely charged us an arm and a leg, but nothing was verifiable. The second time I brought two Maine Coon kittens in which we had just bought. They needed a medical checkup and their shots. For some odd reason the vet each time took the cat away elsewhere out of my scope of vision for having the shots given. Also, the vet showed me that the kitties had lots of bugs in their fur. I assumed that she meant we should wash them, but she gave no advice nor any shots or medicine. Upon getting home (and later visiting a different animal clinic) it turned out that they had diarrhea due to an infection by the bugs, which is quite common, especially if kittens grown up with a breeder with a dog and living in the woods with outside access, like they did.. It shows how careless the vet was not to take initiative on the bugs and let them get sick. He also did not ask for a stool sample nor take any other samples, like of the blood, so there really was not a true checkup. We had that done fully at another clinic. These vets do not seem to care about the pets, not about the owners, who have a vested financial and emotional interest in their pets (major investments that start when one acquires one's pet). As a pet owner you need both, so your money and time is wasted here. PS Oh, and parking is a pain there. Their parking is designed totally wrong is hard to maneuver in. read more

We LOVE Dedham Vets Associates. Dr Gilleece is the best ! SHe is always happy to see your pet ,never rushes through the appointment and will take the time to call after a visit to see how your pet is doing. She really cares for your pets health! The facility itself is extremely spotless wether your appointment is early in the morning or late evening and the staff is always happy and very accommodating. We winter in Florida and when our dog isn't feeling well out of state,Dr Gilleese stills helps and as always will check back. We would never think of taking our dog to any other place. read more

Last November, my husband and I took our yellow lab to Boston Vet Specialists in Dedham to have his hips evaluated by who we were referred to as an incredibly competent and expert in the field of hip dysplasia - Dr. William Henry. Now, many months later, we have come to realize that compassion and respectful patient care are not synonymous with competence and number of degrees. If I could take back the initial call I made to the office I would do it in a heartbeat. I wish I never allowed this man to touch our dog. After initial review, Dr. William Henry determined that our dog's right knee was the source of his walking problems not his hips. (It took about $500 of xrays for him to figure this out). Thank god, we didn't jump to the surgery that he had wanted to perform in November . He was ready to operate but we said we'd wait two months and see the progress of his hips in January. It was then after more xrays, that Dr. Henry said that his knees needed surgery not his hips. Magically... his hips looked better. ??? In mid-February he underwent his first surgery on his knee. He returned to our house three days later. Under firm directions of Dr. Henry, we kept him limited to his bed and crate. He only got up to move around and to use the bathroom. Believe me when I say, he was limited! Several days later, he began whining at night and appeared uncomfortable. Back to the vet we went, to find out the terrible news that our lab had bent the wires in his knee requiring a second surgery to fix the problem. It was a terrible thing and we felt absolutely awful. I bawled in the vet's office. To make matters worse, Dr. Henry completely blamed us and made us feel like terrible owners. "I'm not happy." was what he uttered with tears streaming down my face. If you see the way we take care of our dog - nothing could be further from the truth. Dr. Henry was more concerned with the fact that we ruined his handiwork than the future of our dog's life. After the second surgery, Dr. Henry demanded that our dog stay at the hospital to be boarded and cared for, saying he wasn't safe under our care, forbidding us from visiting for his several week stay. Again, he made us feel like we had abused our dog. He made us feel like crap. Twice while being boarded for 2-3 weeks, I had to go into the vet to pick up some papers and drop off extra food. The secretary offered a quick visit with our dog, under the supervision of a nurse. Literally the visit was 10 minutes and our dog stayed lying down and I just said hello and gave a couple of scratches & love..if you're a dog lover, you can understand that it was like losing a member of the family. We missed him so much! Dr. Henry was away on vacation and just when it couldn't get any worse, we received a call from the other vet, that our dog again was looking bad and after an X-Ray, it looked like he shattered his patellar tendon and basically severed his knee cap from the attaching ligaments. This was under THEIR care!!! He was in an incredibly tenuous position. After his THIRD surgery in a three-week span, our dog was in an incredibly precarious situation. We are thankful that BVS covered the cost of boarding and the final surgery, but he would remain at the vet hospitalized for another three weeks. At the end of this nightmare, Dr. Henry left us feeling like we were to blame for everything, insinuating that we had twisted the arms of the nurses to visit the dog (not true) and had allowed him to jump up on furniture when he had initially come home from the first surgery (not true.) In writing he implied that our two 10 minute visits caused him to chip his bone and cause the final damage. Most of the staff was incredibly kind and caring to us and our beloved pet, but Dr. Henry was nothing but pompous, arrogant, conceited and didn't care or listen to anything we had to say. Despite spending $5,000 to repair his knee, Dr. Henry wants to operate on his left knee (yeah right, like he's ever touching our dog again!!!). We also demanded his chart (getting the run around from the staff who didn't want to release the records) and were appalled to see what Dr. Henry wrote about us. Actually saying that he was going to send our dog to his other practice on the Cape to keep us away from our own dog! He made many other very unprofessional comments about us. At the end of all of this, all Dr. Henry could tell us was that he needed the other knee done and that our dog would never run again. That's it. Not a word of hope, compassion, understanding that we had been put through hell during the months of February and March. There hasn't been a call to follow-up on his progress or to ask how he was. Every word this man utters is laced with condescension and a pompous "I know it all, you know nothing" tone. You know, for all the awards and diplomas that this man has on his walls - it obviously doesn't get you anything when it comes to compassion and respect. read more

I almost forgot to add that last April I found a fast growing lump on my then 13 year old dog's chest. Dr. Kuo is amazing and I am so happy that she has been my dog's vet since she arrived at DVA. She set me up again with Dr. Catherine Briere, the orthopedic vet. After x-rays she gave the diagnosis of a tumor on his chest that was cancerous. We set up surgery the following week. She did a fantastic job on his surgery and removed the tumor. A couple of days later he was back to his self. I cannot do anything but thank all of the staff who are always so friendly and caring whenever I come in or call. They always follow up with a phone call. They are part of the reason why my 14 year of rescue Beagle is alive and still very healthy besides some bumps in the road. I can never thank them enough. read more

The vets and staff at Dedham Veterinary Associates are amazing and compassionate. Our 6 year old Australian Cattle Dog became sick, lethargic and unable to keep food down. We called them and got information to make her more comfortable and a same day appointment. They were able to perform x-rays and in-house reads of blood tests so a diagnosis could be made that day. After a thorough diagnosis they treated her. The next day, a Saturday, the vet personally phoned to check up on our dog Spencer. She now feels great after receiving such thorough and compassionate care. Also vet is very accommodating to us, worried dog parents. Dedham Veterinary Associates is the best. I brought my pet into DVA for surgery and Dr. Briere is absolutely amazing. She is thorough, caring and honest. She is very personable and very intelligent. She knew exactly what was going on with my pet and knew the exact course of action to take. She was very confident in her diagnosis as well. I have experienced very unsure vets in the past that have caused my pet further, unnecessary problems (for example, at Angell in Jamaica Plain). The surgery, incision and recovery went just as planned and there were no complications during or after the surgery. I was VERY happy with the outcome and if I could have given this vet office more than 5 stars, I would have. I will be returning there from now on. I should mention that the technicians and people at the front desk were very informative and helpful as well. The entire staff seemed to be on the ball, very organized and worked well together as a team. The office is beautiful inside as well. It is very clean and new looking with a large salt water tank. I really can't say enough about how happy I am with the vets at this office. I have had pets my entire life and have only once found another vet (in a different state) who was as good as these vets at DVA. My education and career are also in the medical field so I know when a vet is top-knotch versus the one who graduated last in their class from vet school. Those interested in price, I found them to be the most reasonably priced. Of course when you're dealing with major surgery, nothing is "cheap" but the surgery was about 50% compared to other nearby (ER and non-ER) vets. I highly recommend this office to anyone with pets who need routine care and especially to those who need surgery performed. read more

The vets, vet techs and clerical staff at Dedham Veterinary Associates are amazing and treat me and my Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Audrey, like valued family members. When I adopted her from a rescue organization four years ago, she suffered from many health problems. The vets here have seen her through two knee surgeries, dental surgery, discovered her food sensitivities and much more. I am a devoted and concerned "pet parent" and extremely picky about my dog's care. The team here meets my high standards and answers all of my questions thoroughly, with great patience. Thanks to them, Audrey is a healthy, happy pet. We have worked with several vets here based on schedules; all are extremely kind and knowledgeable. Dr. Kuo in particular is Audrey's main care giver and is fantastic. (I wish my human doctors were as nice or spent as much time with patients!) The vet techs are skilled and gentle. Never once have I felt pressured to purchase any product or service. In fact, the staff always look for ways to help me manage costs. Everyone here is an animal lover and it shows in the care they provide your pets. read more

Over the past year and a half I have had to bring Fig, my female tabby shelter cat, to Dedham Vet several times. I have always been treated courteously and Fig has always been given excellent care with gentle handling. She is a difficult cat, with an unhappy history but Drs. Mason and Gilleece (the only doctors that I've met of the four on the staff ) have been most helpful. The medications prescribed have always been appropriate and effective. As for the appearance of the clinic, it is shining clean, neat, attractive and with a comfortable waiting area. The entire staff is friendly and efficient. I like the fact that there so many doctors at this clinic; I foresee many more visits in the future and am more comfortable knowing that various doctors will get familiar with Fig and her record. I'm very grateful to the friend who recommended this hospital. read more

While I do agree with the reviewer who said to "beware the upsell" and I do find the practice of bringing my dogs to the back room annoying, overall my experience has been good. Particularly when I brought my dog in with an emergency. They immediately went to work on her and when she passed away (there was nothing that could be done for her) everyone in the practice had tears in their eyes. read more

I am a client of Boston Veterinary Specialists. My cocker spaniel, Lady was a patient of Dr. Henry's. I was appalled at the bad review someone "named" Jack gave. Every time, I saw Dr. Bill Henry he was gracious, and wonderful. I went to him because my friend Diane stated he was a wonderful man. I had no problems with Dr. Henry. All I can say is, once you meet and speak with Dr. Henry, I think you will agree, he is a great man. He is very patient, explains everything, and does not push you into any decisions. read more

I took my dog here for shots and a check up. He is usually pretty nervous around new people but he really like the staff and vet that I saw. They were very kind and welcoming. I was offered the lepto shot but did not get it since my dog does not spend much time outdoors. They were very supportive of my decision. I did not feel like they were trying to push or sell anything. I did elect to get the blood work profile done. I did not feel pressured about this. I just wanted to know that my dog is healthy since I tend to be a worrier. I am happy to have piece of mind. He is lazy, not sick. Overall I think that they were very thorough with the exam and really took some time to answer lots of questions that I had. I will definitely go there in the future! read more
