Here is how this all went down: It's the day before Thanksgiving. Kelly G. is packing up the car so that we can take off to my family's house in Maine. Outside, next door at the Y-Not convenience a police woman is getting her paper. She walks outside, smells the burning plastic smell, looks around and sees smoke coming out of our chimney, then calls 911. The chimney was busted and the smoke was drafting out of it instead of into the house so Kelly G and my best friend have no idea what is going on. The fire department comes running up the stairs as Kelly is taking stuff down to the car and is like, "Where's the fire?!?!" To which Kelly replies, "I don't know, where IS the fire?" They wind up chopping a big hole in the roof to get to the fire and hose the thing down. Meanwhile I get back to my desk from lunch and give her a call to let her know I'll be getting out at 3:00 and she tells me the roof is on fire. I repeat her, and my coworker starts singing the roof is on fire song as I dash out the door to get home. When I get to our house, the street is blocked off, there are 3 fire trucks around the house, and I'm directed to the Fire Chief. He lets me know that the house is not livable and we'll have to get all our valuables out that day. This is the reason they get 5 stars: He asks if I have the land lord's number and tells me I need to call him. I'm like, "Really? There is a hole in our roof, our stuff all buried in rubble, I'm homeless, and I'm the one who has to call my land lord and tell him the house burned down?... Can you do it?" The fire chief let me know that it wasn't exactly standard procedure, but that he'd be willing to make an exception. He called and explained everything to my landlord who lives in Florida. That was above and beyond the call of duty. Bravo Somerville FD.

It's tragic that the bar for government services is set so drastically low that not being spat on…read moreby a worker generally warrants at least two stars. With that being said I am astounded with how professional and courteous the people in this office are. Not once was I scowled at, shunned, talked down to, or otherwise harassed during my brief visit here. In fact I was served promptly after being greeted with a polite hello and smile from the two women working the front desks. The waiting area is awfully small which seemed a wee bit overambitious but luckily I never had a chance to sit down. The woman who helped me with my air conditioner disposal needs was nice, patient, and clear in what I had to do even outlining a plan for getting my money back should someone take it for scrap in the night. I respect that. This may well be the best government experience I've ever had. Fast, courteous, and stress-free. I think that's worth Yelping about.

Just Go (#4)…read more Massachusetts was the first East Coast state we visited in 2012, it was in the middle of winter, it was brutal but it was an adventure. In my recent review for the Trinidad Memorial I had mentioned Gloucester from the movie, "The Perfect Storm" (2000) where they had the names of those who perished at sea inscribed in plaques... we found the plaque and the monument from that storm at the Gloucester Fishermen's Memorial. That same year we took a one-hour tour at Lizzie Borden Bed & Breakfast Museum. We were the only guests so it was nice and private. Robin, our tour guide, was great and shared loads of information about the history recounting the murders, explaining the photos and furnitures. I also enjoyed listening to her East Coast accent. All rooms are available for booking including the room where Lizzie's mom was killed from 18 blows to the head by an ax... reserve up to a year in advance. We enjoyed a basketball game between the Boston Celtics and Orlando Magic with KG and Paul Pierce vs Dwight "Superman" Howard and Vincinity. It was nice seeing some of my Sacramento Kings who got traded to the Orlando Magic roster play on the hardwood. It was just impossible to make it to everything we wanted to see in one visit so we returned for another trip in the summer of June 2023. We took a ferry ride and spent a whole day at Martha's Vineyard. When I hear of Martha's Vineyard I only know to associate it to presidential vacations and retreats but there's so much more charm to it and I want to go back! Make sure you purchase a bus pass to take you around town. Edgartown was the first town we visited, a quiet lovely village with a deep history of its New England whaling past. This is the town where they filmed some of the scenes from Steven Spielberg's 1975 blockbuster "Jaws." The original sign used for Amity National Bank in the movie was displayed inside the Edgartown Nat'l Bank. We hopped on the VTA bus and visited the Gay Head Lighthouse and the multicolored clay cliffs of the Gay Head Cliffs in the Town of Aquinnah. It's the least populous town on the island and the views are breathtaking. The lighthouse was also featured in the movie "Jaws." Lastly, we took the bus and hopped off in the Town of Oak Bluffs at the northeastern shore of the island. Oak Bluffs is a vibrant and happening town, contrast to the old world charm of Edgartown. Here is where the Flying Horses carousel can be found. The carousel was acquired from Coney Island in NY. The manes and tails from the horses are real horsehairs and the eyes are inset glass eyes. This is a landmark attraction. Btw, there are no actual vineyards on Martha's Vineyard and the island is only accessible from the mainland via ferry. Before heading out of MA we stopped one more time at the Lizzie Borden House. It was already evening and there were occupants in the rooms so we just took pics from outside. So much to see and do!
