Wow! I've been seeing Dr. Tabb for about 3 years now, and I have no idea why so many people are reviewing her so poorly! I love Dr. Tabb! The office is clean and tidy, and they have always been cordial. There is a drastically more pleasant feeling here than in other offices I've been to in the DC area. The hygienists are thorough and polite and Dr. Tabb is also very sweet and knowledgeable. I understand that others feel she is somewhat of a saleswoman-- and I have a small sense of this, but I definitely feel that she has the best intentions. Teeth are an important feature that some people shouldn't overlook! Anyway, if I ever feel like they are offering something I don't need, I simply state that I am not interested and nothing more is said. Anyway, I've had only good experiences here, and I now bring my boyfriend to her as well. read more

The motive of any medical professional should be to provide care for patients. Deborah Tabb's motive is to milk as much money from insurance and the patient. I am a healthy 30 year old male, with good oral hygiene. Deborah Tabb recommended: Two separate teeth scaling appointments, one for each side of the mouth (I don't have gum disease lol) Two separate Gingival Irrigation treatments (Again, no gum disease) Night Guard for teeth grinding (At $375 - you can buy this from Amazon for $100) Treatment for 5 cavities (Only 1-2 likely actually need treatment) For a total cost of $783! After talking to dentists in my family (my uncle is practicing and my brother-in-law will be soon), we determined that Deborah Tabb is simply trying to bill both the patient and insurance for as much as possible. In addition, she is smart enough to avoid damaging her ZocDoc rating. Her technique was to cancel the appointment I booked for her through the ZocDoc, and then affirm the appointment when I called in. read more

Add me to the many others who experienced this dentist attempting to rip them off. My dentist retired, I went to her based on another reviewing service, and it was a striking nightmare. It was so ridiculous, I have to restrain myself from writing all the details. She stated I needed $7000 worth of out-of-pocket services (The total bill was much higher) that two reputable dentists said were blatant lies. she said I had gum disease, and they said that was preposterous. One dentist recommended I contact the insurance company to report her. Insult to injury? The temporary crown she put on fell off within two days and the dentist who repaired it couldn't believe the horrible quality of her work. As others said here, caveat emptor. Used them right out of college prior to moving away from the area and had pretty much the same awful experience anyone else had. They act in a condescending / patronizing manner toward anyone who does not appear professional / well dressed and they attempt to upsell services like a religious cult advertising poisonous kool aid. Make sure you review any options offered with caution independently before committing as most are marginally useful at best, and vastly overpriced. Cleanings were mediocre and somewhat painful. I got a second opinion after she told me I needed 9 fillings by a professor of dentistry at Georgetown University and he said she practices over-practice. I really wish I would have read these reviews before making an appointment with this provider. Unfortunately, I had very similar experiences as others. I would give a negative star if I could. I went for a routine cleaning, but instead she tried to sell me sealants, root planing, enamel replacement, invisalign, whitening, a sonic tooth brush and prescription tooth paste (only $1,700 out of pocket). She told me I needed these services within 5 minutes of seeing me. She even went to the trouble of finding out how much my insurance would pay and how much I would have to pay. She cleverly figured out that it would take over 12 months to get insurance to pay her for all of the things she was quoting (due to yearly caps). Oh, and when I told her that I could not have my teeth whitened because my two front teeth are caps, she cheerfully told me that she could replace my caps with whiter ones. Sure! To make matters worse, I do not believe I got a cleaning at all. The hygienist gouged my back gum and told me that she could not clean my teeth because I had too much gum disease. She washed my mouth out with water. No floss, no polish. Instead, she booked me for a "deep" cleaning the following day and for the following week. After leaving the office and paying $6 for parking, I checked Yelp and other sources because the entire visit was so unbelievable. I just could not believe that just months ago I got a clean bill of health and suddenly I needed thousands of dollars worth of improvements. I made an appointment with another dentist and he told me that I do not have any gum disease. He did not recommend any of the services that Dr. Tabb was so willing to provide. Needless to say, I cancelled my deep cleaning services and will go back to my dentist and pay a higher out of pocket (he is not in network). I would rather pay 100% than to be scammed by someone who accepts my insurance. There were so many horrible things about this visit, but I can only outline these major issues. Dr. Tabb is a salesperson and has had a negative outcome with the Maryland Dental Board. It does not seem as if she has changed her practice since her reprimand and this is troubling. Please, don't make the same mistake I made. Just because a provider tells you that you need something, don't believe them at face value. There is a difference between cosmetic dentistry and dentistry focused on dental health. The word "upsell" does not begin to cover my experience.... Here's what happened to me: My first inkling that something wasn't right came when I had to fill out the forms on a computer screen that you could NOT change, correct, or make any notes upon! You must fill this out in front of a full waiting room of people that hear everything you say to the staff behind the sliding glass window (zero privacy!) On screen (and on two wooden plaques on the wall!), it states that you MUST pay (immediately) "when service is rendered." After a lengthy discussion w/staff (with a waiting room full of people who can hear everything (helloooo? a little privacy please?!), I was finally granted their equivalent of a "Papal dispensation": they agreed to submit my bill to my insurance company FIRST and then AFTER the insurance had paid them, I would pay "my portion." Apparently, I am the only person to ever receive this treatment since everyone else pays on their way out after treatment. (more about this later)* While I was in the dentist chair, fully reclined (with the blinding overhead light shining directly in my face), an assistant comes in with a 2-page (single-spaced) printout of a "Proposed Treatment Plan" and tells me I MUST sign it before they "can" (ie. will) treat me! From that extremely awkward position, I see the Disclaimer: "Guarantor is responsible for all treatment not covered by insurance." The proposed treatment was $8,749.00 and my estimated insurance coverage was $1,892.00 leaving me to pay the $6,857.00 balance IMMEDIATELY "when service is rendered." Since I have personal experience in litigation and the law, I simply amended (crossed out) everything NOT covered by insurance and signed the document with the exclusion of non-insurance covered items. Dr. Tabb comes in and goes over each item (2 pages worth) to try to "upsell" me. She seemed quite upset and started drilling on my teeth WITH NO ANESTHETIC! When a dental assistant asked if I should get novocaine, Dr. Tabb replied, "No, he doesn't want it if it's not covered by his insurance!" To say that was a painful experience is putting it mildly! * I have had to spend many hours of my time talking both to my insurance company and to Dr. Tabb's billing office. I even got a scrawled hand written note from one of her staff "we have been patient with you...but we must now collect, etc." and the insurance hadn't even sent their final payment! (so the account wasn't "overdue") Caveat emptor! PS. There are 33 "filtered" reviews! While many are obviously bogus, no "normal" business should have that high number. Please stay away from this dentist at all costs! I consulted with her and she gave me a laundry list of things that needed to be fixed and I fell for it. We discussed my dental insurance and co-payments and I was assured that it would only cost the allowed amount according to the terms of my dental insurance. After a year and getting a lot of work done, she suddenly decided that I needed to pay everything on my account. I trusted her bookkeeping, but told her that the balance I owed was not correct. In order to get my teeth cleaned, I went ahead and paid with my credit card. Later, I went home and audited my records of what I had paid and my dental insurance paid according to the benefit statements. I discovered that I overpaid $2,000! I sent her the paper work proving that I overpaid her and asked for a refund. I never got a call, note, or any kind of acknowledgment about my over payment. My credit card company insisted that I had to get my refund from her, so I am still making payments on a debt that legally I don't owe. The bottom line is that if there is every a financial dispute then she has an ethical duty to address it. Refusing to return calls or letters is extremely unprofessional and unethical. The proper way to handle it would have been to send me the proof that I did not overpay her if she believed that my records were incorrect. I can guarantee that my excel spreadsheet, benefit statements, and bank statements were not wrong! However, I am an honest person and would have been happy to pay what I truly owed to her. Also, after she would not mail my records to my new dentist, I found out that the remainder of the crowns that I needed are not necessary. One crown that Dr. Tabb had done fell out and had to be cemented again. (Dr. Tabb had already replaced it once.) If you would like to spend thousands of dollars for unnecessary dental work, then that's certainly your choice. If you are a single mom on a budget like me, then stay away. I thought Dr. Tabb was a nice lady and cared about me, so I have no idea why she treated me like she did. I am stunned by her unprofessional behavior and no longer trust health care "professionals". Having just finished treatment with Dr. Tabb, I agree completely with the reviews posted here. I do not know how this woman stays in business. I had just seen another dentist within 3 months of seeing Dr. Tabb and all of a sudden, I had a cavity in every tooth in my mouth. Plus she recommended that I have one of my lower front teeth pulled because she said she couldn't fix it. My previous dentist told me I had a cavity in that tooth and another one in another tooth. So, feeling very stupid now, I agreed to Dr. Tabb's treatment plan and had the tooth pulled and a denture made. Then she did the other work--filling all the other teeth. She billed my insurance company 3 times for the same 3 teeth that she filled and added on a cost of $450 for "materials" for the denture. My insurance paid for the "materials" as they were included in the cost of the denture. The $450 I had to pay out of pocket. By the time she finished, I went over what she had billed me, what she claimed to the insurance company and discovered that she owed me $923. That amount will probably remain in dispute with her. But I am more concerned with the quality of the work that she did. I need to see another dentist but one of the fillings that she put in has fallen out and another tooth that she filled is very sensitive to touch. PLEASE STAY AWAY FROM THIS WOMAN. I don't know how she keeps her license. She certainly is one of the most incompetent dentists that I have ever had the misfortune to know. read more

I recently had to switch insurance companies due to work. Having seen the same dentist for over 10 years, the idea of having to find someone new because of my insurance policy was extremely stressful but inevitable. After some research, I found Dr. Tabb. She took my insurance and had an office in my neighborhood. I thought I won the lottery. Unfortunately, I couldn't have been more wrong. I went to see Dr. Tabb for a routine cleaning and to inquire about a chip to my front tooth. During the consult, she gave me a big pitch about teeth whitening, a new mouth guard for my teeth grinding, and she told me I had multiple cavities and some "potential" cavities that needed fillings. Reminder, I came in for just a cleaning and to inquire about a tooth that was slightly chipped. I stood my ground on all but one of the fillings. Flash forward to today, the bonding she did (a month ago) is cracking. And I've developed sensitivity in the tooth she filled for the "cavity". To all future and current patients - please do your homework. The proof is in the work. These reviews are up here for a reason. Dr. Tabbs knack for selling you on procedures is relentless. You should never feel like you have to "stand your ground" at a doctors office. Tabb is very good, I disagree with other posters. I've been going for years, never had an issue with scheduling or over booking - typically they are flexible last minute as well, I often reschedule the week of. She is knowledgeable, friendly... a little sales oriented when I was new - she recommended I do pretty much everything, but I like that, I've had other dentists that are afraid to bring up ideas or what other people are doing. She did not force anything - I made decisions for myself like an adult - if other posters found this challenging, I don't know why. Her staff is very good - one time I had a guy in that was temp and not as strong, but normal staff is fantastic... my normal hygienist was a dentist in her home country. Overall, I would recommend. I have been seeing Dr. Tabb since 1999 and my smile has become one of my biggest assets. I've sent my kids to her too. She is the only dentist who listened to me when I said I wanted a whiter, brighter smile without capping my teeth. Once the initial restoration work was done which she performed over two years in order to maximize my insurance coverage, saving me money, maintenance of my beautiful and healthy smile has been a breeze. The hygienists always do a great job. I've never had a bad experience at her office and the staff has always been easy to work with on my insurance. Dr. Tabb is into helping you get and keep the healthiest smile that modern techniques allow and if you read any of the latest health care news, a healthy mouth has been shown to decrease coronary artery disease. I had bonding done here and two months later is came off when flossing. They fixed it and it came off again five months later. Moreover, their billing practices are slimy. They claimed I didn't pay for services when I did. I sent several letters with proof and they finally figured out it was their billing system that had the flaw. I had other appointments during this billing dispute and was told I was not welcome in their practice until I paid the bill. Once they acknowledged they were wrong they never apologized. Dr. Deborah Tabb has been my dentist for roughly 25 years. My previous dentist was a man with rather large hairy fingers. I have to say that I much prefer the feeling of delicate female fingers in my mouth. I have very bad teeth. They have always been soft and prone to decay. As a child I regularly averaged eight cavities per visit. I did not floss as a child and consequently had problem with gum disease as an adult. My dental file is inches thick an always elicits surprise from a new dental assistant. Office staff and Ambiance - I have always found Dr. Tabb's staff to be helpful, polite and personable. The ambiance in the office is comfortable and relaxed. It has a family friendly feel. Everything is spotless and the equipment always seems to new and state-of-the-art. I have learned to bring a sweater since the treatment rooms are sometimes a bit cold. The staff is diligent about filing insurance claims. General health maintenance - I now realize how important dental hygiene is to overall health. Unattended infection from decaying teeth can wreak havoc on body and brain. I am convinced that without modern dental care, the weakness of my teeth would have caused me severe problems. I doubt I would still be alive. Dr. Tabb always explains her treatment plan and leaves the final decision to me. If, however, she feels that critical action must be taken she says so. Care and tending of teeth and gums - I have always felt confident that Dr. Tabb was concerned, primarily with the health of my teeth and gums. She has filled countless cavities, fitted most of my teeth with crowns, and done extensive work on my gums, which are now in good shape. I cannot remember having any problems with Dr. Tabb's work. Occasionally a crown has come loose but all I needed to do was return to the office to have the crown re-cemented. Cosmetics - Dr. Tabb prides herself on the aesthetic quality of her work. She does an excellent job of making teeth look as good as possible, matching the color of crowns to the color of existing teeth. I have had a number of other dentists comment that the work on my teeth looked great. I recently mentioned to an othodontist's assistant that I had temporary crowns on two mollars. She showed surprise and said, "They are temporaries!" Apparently they looked as good as permanent crowns. Pain. I am not particularly freaked out by visits to the dentist and I think I have a relatively high tolerance for pain. Nevertheless, I believe that Dr. Tabb does an excellent job of minimizing the discomfort and actual pain associated with the extensive dental work that I have had. Cleanings. Because of trouble with my gums, I need quarterly cleanings. Over the course of 25 years I have had my teeth cleaned by many different dental assistants. As a general rule, I have found that anyone who works for Dr. Tabb is conscientious and thorough in their cleaning. On rare occasions I got a cleaning that seemed perfunctory and inadequate, but again, this was the exception to the rule. Appointments - Appointment times are usually kept within a 15 minute window. I can remember only once during the 25 years when my was left in the waiting room for over half an hour. read more

I unfortunately had a very similar experience to some of the other reviewers. I was required to have my teeth whitened, she refused to put in a crown until I had that done (I was not allowed to schedule my crown appointment until I scheduled a whitening)...and my mouth burned terribly afterwards. Then she kept recommending these horrible deep cleanings. I never understood why but they were twice as expensive and painful. The final straw was when she drilled down the height of a lower front tooth to accomodate a new crown on my upper front. It made no sense and she did not tell me she was going to do it...she just started drilling away on a perfectly healthy front lower tooth and then quickly exited the room. I realized what she had done on my way out...I wish I could go back in time and either stop her or ....oh well. The lower tooth was left with a very sharp edge and looks lower than the others. I would be very carefuly around her. As an update, Dr. Tabb did offer to "fix" her work at no charge since she guarantees her work. read more

I've seen Dr. Tabb twice and it's the only time I've seen a dentist or doctor and felt like I was getting a full sales pitch. I went in for a basic cleaning (I have never had any dental problems) and she tried to sell me everything under the sun. She replaced 2 mercury fillings, which had to be redone by another dentist a year later when the new fillings started to crack and leak. She should have spent more time on providing basic treatment, and less time trying to sell me extra services. read more

I saw Dr Tabb for the first time approx 6 months ago. We had recently signed up for a dental plan through our insurance provider and she was one of the dentists who were covered under our plan. This review was written only after getting second opinions on the laundry list of services she was recommending for my family. Clearly, Dr Tabb is not interested in merely cleaning teeth and x-rays. There's no doubt that she is a nice lady and the office is clean. Candidly, there are thousands of dentists who are cordial and operate in a clean environment. This is a baseline requirement for all doctors with whom we are looking to establish a relationship. For me personally, what I thought was a routine cleaning became a "scaling" or a "deep cleaning", which was not covered under my insurance. Dr Tabb's hygenist initiated this service without seeking my approval to do so. In hindsight, I should have refused payment. I never went back for my routine cleaning and decided I would rather pay out of pocket to a dentist I trust, then to use a dentist who is looking for additional revenue streams every time a patient opens their mouth. In my wife's case, Dr Tabb found 16 teeth that were concerning and needed various services. Today, she received a second opinion from another dentist. They concluded that action needed to be taken on less than 1/3 of the teeth recommended by Dr Tabb. I'm sure Dr Tabb is a competent dentist. The question boils down to whether she and her staff are to be trusted. In my humble opinion, many of the services she recommends are nice-to-haves, not critical requirements. If you want to spend thousands of dollars on unnecessary services, Dr Tabb will sell you the kitchen sink. If you prefer to spend that money on a family vacation, or towards your child's college education--perhaps you want to consider another dentist. Dr Tabb gives dentists a bad name. read more

My husband has dentist phobia, but we love going to see Dr. Tabb. She lets me go to all his appointments so I can sit with him and hold his hand. The other reviewer has it right. Sell Sell Sell. It's unethical. Plans get bigger, electric toothbrushes, unnecessary cleanings, whitening, nitrous for painless procedures. It's really unseemly. It's so bad I actually am suspicious she's doing stuff to my teeth that is not medically necessary. I've even felt that there may be a chance she is damaging my teeth so she can do and charge more, but that's way too paranoid, so I've rejected the notion. Dr. Tabb has been a wonderful dentist for me. I have become pretty anxious about dental work over the years and feel very claustrophobic when in the chair. Avoid Dr. Tabb's office at all costs, unless you like to be scammed. I went in for a tooth cleaning, received a five-minute one-time pass of the water jet, which the hygienist said was what their office considered a regular tooth cleaning, and was charged $102 for that "cleaning"; no scaling, no root planing, no flossing, no polishing, not even a free toothbrush at the end! When I complained to the dentist Dr. Tabb, she said that because I had a deep pocket (7), I had severe periodontal disease and what I needed was not a "regular" cleaning but I needed to come back to be examined by the periodontist and receive a deep cleaning (which cost more than twice as much as the "regular" cleaning). I got out of that office with a bill for $252, and had only received a five-minute water jet pass, plus, when I decided not to come back to be scammed a second time and asked for my records back so that I could go to another dentist, I was told I would have to pay $25 to get a copy of their records, but, after putting me off with the excuse that they were too busy, they then claimed they could not find anymore all my previous years' dental records, which I had personally handed to them only one week before, and finally claimed they had already given them back to me. So I am out $252 and all my dental records prior to them, and I still need to get my teeth cleaned! read more

When I look in my mouth, I see 32 teeth. When Dr. Tabb looked in my mouth, see saw 32 separate profit centers for her practice. From my very first visit, I always had the sense that Dr. Tabb's goal was to maximize revenue from me. She prepared a detailed program of dental work: she made a list of "old fillings" that she said should be replaced. A subsequent dentist (listed in "Washington's Best") told me they were still servicable and that there was no need to replace them until they failed. Guess what? Nine years later, I still have most of them. She asked how old one restoration of a chipped tooth was and when I said 18 years, she said they aren't intended to last more than 10 years and should be replaced. Guess what? Nine years later (the restoration is now over 27 years old) I still have it, and none of my four subsequent dentists ever recommended replacing it. As for her technical skills, I can't comment definitively, but one of the fillings she put in fell out within months; when she fitted me for a tray to bleach my teeth, I got a blister in my mouth that required further treatment. Dr. Tabb gives the profession a bad name. Avoid like the plague. read more

Everything that everyone says about Dr. Tabb is true. Sort of. My experience as a patient over the last 6 or 7 years has been such that I would recommend her to friends who are confident about asking questions, can realize that there's a difference between what's necessary and what's optional, and can say "no thanks." Oh, and want a technically really good dentist. Here's what I think is the most important thing to know: technically, she's a terrific. Her work (fillings, onlays, crowns) is just really good. And, while she'll advocate for, say, teeth whitening, she has not - with me at least - pushed a crown when an onlay will do or pushed an onlay when a filling would do. And she is very good at explaining what she's doing, she shares X-rays, shares photos. And when you're in the chair, she's fast. Don't want laughing gas, teeth whitening, expensive prescription toothpaste or Invisiline? Just say no. Yes, she does push these things, but she's not what I think of when I think of a pushy person. I think of her as really skilled. Finally, I'd add that she and the office seem to be very on top of what insurance covers and what it doesn't. I've been very happy to have Dr. Tabb as my dentist for over eight years. I've been completely satisfied with the care that she provides and with my interactions with her, the hygienists and office staff. My wife, children and even my mother are also her clients. Her services are not cheap, but she does excellent work. I never have to wait long, everyone is friendly and they handle reimbursement from my insurance quite efficiently. The dental care she provides is really outstanding with high concern for aesthetics. She's given me healthy teeth and gums after a long period of neglect before I visited her office. In my opinion, the negative reviews are really off base. She always explains treatment options and costs; I've never felt pressured to get treatments without understanding the need.
