Before I start my review, there's quite an amazing and sentimental backstory here. So this will be…read moreabout a five minute read. Imagine this: over 20 years ago a teenage Teagin Henderson applied for, and was selected to fill, a position we had for a receptionist and general office duties. She lived at Paddington with her parents, which was a bonus, as our office, Lape & Partners, was located in Petrie Terrace, about five minutes away. We loved Teagin's energy, warmth and genuine nature. Then, one day, she told of us her desire to be a dog trainer and was moving to Melbourne to pursue a course degree in it, with an optimal view of working with our border patrol and customs declarations. But, and there's always a but, that didn't quite work out and she relocated back to Brisbane opening a dog grooming salon in Bardon. And while I admired the move and success she was achieving, my wife was the one who chose the groomer for our Westies, until recently. With her away overseas, along with our usual groomer, and our Westie Pippa in need of serious stripping, I had the liberty of booking her in with Four Paw. And, so, it's become full circle. We had Pippa in today for a stripping and she looks fabulous. The amount of hair removed is quite remarkable and she looks sleeker and fitter than ever, which she was but hidden under a thick coat of fur. It's a pleasure to see someone truly achieving their goals and dreams and then to reconnect with them to experience it personally. It is truly a humbling and awesome feeling and to think we were there, at the inception of Teagin's future thinking, and then to experience it today, was a fulfilling experience few will ever have. Well-done!

In between groomers, our four-legged charge had nothing to loose. I was lucky to be able to get a free spot. Let it be know these guys are popular and are, for example, already booked out for December. I took that as the sign of a good dog groomer. The second sign was how happy the furball was when he was picked up. He'd been able to wander the salon while he waited for us to collect him, and the cut was one of the best I've seen him have. And when they ask you to re-book for 8 weeks take it - they book out mighty fast.

Then, behind the counter, there's a row of flea tablets lined up like cigarette packets. Glancing at the beer and tablet line-up, I felt like I was in the equivalent of a dream toy shop for dogs where they also sell beer and smokes. This large store sells an insane amount of toys for your pet. There's stuff for cats, birds, fish and other pets, but as I have a dog it was mostly dog-specific products I focused on. The dog selection seemed to take up a large proportion of the store, and there's even a dog (a surprisingly docile Chihuahua) that sleeps on the front counter. (He's six, called Louis, and likes pats but not being held.) Besides a huge selection of toys - so much you can't take it all in in one visit - there's other stuff to pimp out your pet, including a doggy clothing rack if your pet is that way inclined. The Pet Cafe also boasts a wide range of health foods for dogs, particularly those suffering from health issues (e.g. calcium deficiency, obesity - general medical issues that also seem common to humans). The store stocks both Science Diet and Advance food and health products. In terms of The Unhealthy, the front counter showcases an assortment of doggy cookies and chocolates (actually made of carob) that are home-made looking. They weren't as expensive as I thought they'd be, but I'd bought enough stuff here already. The counter staff were also incredibly friendly and chatty, which you'd gather from a business where there is a resident pet.

Katie in particular was just so kind and caring and full of great ways to help Snoopy settle in with us and gave us some samples of food to try him on as he's had been very fussy and nervous about eating. It's helped us a lot as buying a big bag of biscuits and him not eating any of them was a real worry. Look forward to coming back in a few weeks to show him off after we've washed him in his new shampoo and conditioner and we've figured out what he really does like to eat.

I scoffed…read moreat this initially but with almost weekly, sometimes bi-weekly visits, to our closest Petbarn store in Kenmore, I'd say whoever came up with that statistic was right on the money. Thankfully, like a lot of big warehouse type retail institutions, their purchasing capacity means discounts are passed down to us, the consumers. Petbarn is one of the cheapest pet supply stores we've found and there's always a great range available in store, plus the staff are readily available to give genuinely helpful advice about the best food for your pooch, and more. I'd also recommend signing up in store for their store rewards. You get a 20% off voucher when joining and they email you regular deals which can come in handy when, for example, you need to purchase Rovers regular food.

Have you ever been into a pet shop that didn't have puppies? Or at least kittens? It's like an ice cream shop with no chocolate, or a sushi place with no salmon. Luckily I soon located them and realised they had simply been hidden behind the Christmassy white spray all over the front windows. This isn't a very big pet shop, but it's adequate. They have a limited range of animals including guinea pigs and fish along with the requisite puppies, pet food and of course accessories. It's not the most exciting of its genre, but it gets the job done.

The times I have been here I've seen puppies, little kittens, guinea pigs and an array of beautiful fish. The puppies, kittens and guinea pigs are located towards the front of the shop and the fishies are towards the back wall. The little pups are the front window cannot be seen by passer by's unless you walk into the store. I think this is a good idea as it might be stressful for the little guys to see lots of people coming up to them. However, having a front view of a paper plastered window does not make this store look appealing. They should consider replacing that. All in all though, the pups don't seem to be bothered and look happy and healthy. One thing I noticed here that I didn't approve of, was all the little children poking the pets and the shop minder didn't seem phased by it at all. I know parents have a responsibility over their children, but I should hope the pet shop staff would protect the pets from children who are stressing them out. Still, despite this, it is a nice little pet store with quite a lot on offer. Good range in toys and pet accessories.

FishChick focused on bettas and guppies, and while you can still get them here, the bettas at least aren't at the same standard. These guys are more into the Australian natives. There's still a great range of fish available, the prices are good, and the staff are more knowledgable than your typical pet store.
