The selection is pretty much what you'd expect to find for the Poundshop, they did have a good deal on Carabao, the Thai energy drink which I'm quite fond off (sadly it's quite hard to find in the UK - even though they sponsor one of our major competitions in football, The Carabao Cup which my beloved Manchester City have won two times in a row - meanwhile Sheffield United have never won it!) Other than having larger cans of Carabao, I was quite upset and shocked at the size of products in the store which was branded, everything was smaller portions than average which I presume was the only way they could offer items so cheap, but honestly the "bargains" they claim to have just felt like they offered no saving (and perhaps were a little more expensive when you compare ml or grams to the pound!) - A real shame. They did have some cool items such as the larger Carabao and the store felt nicer and much more modern than most other pound shops but still for me, they really need to review their product range in terms of sizes of products offered in 99.9% of cases. Also have xmas they have a fantastic display with some great offers. the main problem is though it is totally over stocked so finding what you want is difficult as everything is piled on top of everything, but if you can it will be a lot cheaper then anywhere else. But do not go in with a pram as you will never get round, let alone back out again, as the aisles are that narrow and stock tends to be piled out and falling off the shelfs everywhere.

I go here regularly for their excellent wrapping paper, 2 sheets and 2 tags are only 50p - a total bargain as they are great quality. They do good deals on gifts and I have bought quite a few things from here for christmas. At easter they also have an excellent range of easter eggs. The staff are very nice and helpful and this is one of the 10 shops in Barnsley I regularly visit as it always has what I am looking for. Now Woolworths in Barnsley has closed I visit here even more.

The menswear section is primarily rugby shirts - club shirts like Sale Sharks and Leicester Tigers, and six nations based tops. A lot of Guinness branded items too like polo shirts, dressing gowns etc. A good variety of footwear too as well as many sale items to sift through. On the whole, a good place for a bargain.

TK Maxx in Barnsley is well located in the Alhambra centre, although you do have to pay for parking. It is quite a small branch compared to some of their other stores, and it is of the older style of decor so looks a bit more dated and rather like the jomble sale that so many people compare it to. There aren't many cash desks and each has an individual queue rather than the communal queues you get in their newer stores - so if someone in front of you needs a price, you're stuck! Plenty of bargains to be had though, and always worth a visit.

It stocks mainly clothes, plus shoes, books, CDs, videos, bric-a-brac, and a small section for toys. The central location means that stock turnover is high, so even if you pop in every day, chances are you'll see something new. However this does mean that the shop gets very busy, especially at lunchtime. The clothes rails are tightly packed together so it can be difficult to manouvre between them when other people are trying to do the same. Also, there's only one changing room, so there can be queues if you want to try something on. Prices are average although there is sometimes some illogical pricing - sometimes they have items from Primark etc that are priced close to what the items would have cost new. I particularly like the book section, as they have some interesting books in great condition, priced around the £1.99-£2.50 mark.

The store does feel pretty old-fashioned inside and it hasn't had any sort of refurb which a lot of the more central and mall locations have, such as the nearest other branch of Waterstones at Meadowhall, which despite being a little smaller is one of my favourite branches of Waterstones. Decent selection of books and the location is decent too being the only Waterstones branch in Sheffield centre, located in Orchard Square fairly close to Costa and Primark. Some unique features to decor mainly in the exterior, but in the interior, it is pretty dark, and a tad gothic, and reminds me a lot of one of my local branches at Manchester - Deansgate. 2* - Useful brand and a decent sized store but for me, it lacks that interior beauty juxtaposing old and new which many of the latest Waterstones stores do have.

The space is attractive and inviting, with plenty of space to browse and to enable good displays of the more popular books. In common with all bookshops it faces strong competition from Amazon, but does a decent job in providing an alternative: while it can never stock such a large selection or compete on price, it has advantages such as being able to browse at leisure, especially useful when you don't know exactly what you're looking for.
