The Wolfhouse - The outside of the wolf house with the beach in the far distance

The Wolfhouse café is part of small 'Wolfhouse' complex of converted outbuildings and wooden cabins also comprising a gift shop, a gallery, and a quirky garden with children's play area. The gallery was shut on our January visit, but everything that was open was in the best possible taste and oozing a relaxed charm. Although only going on one visit, the culinary firepower here seems to be beyond outstanding! Ignore the fact that their website lacks contact details or even an address - this is probably just them being arty! Instead, click through under 'Goods' to 'Savouries' http://wolfhousekitchen.co.uk/goods/savouries/ and 'Pâtisserie' http://wolfhousekitchen.co.uk/goods/patisserie-menu/patisserie-menu-2/ and feast your eyes. Both myself and my friend had different and interesting Pukka herbal tea blends, and a chalkboard advertised that their coffee beans were roasted by a local Lancaster business, with Valrhona hot chocolate, so I think they have the drinks covered. I had goat's cheese, pistachio and prune cake which I think may be this recipe http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/cheese_pistachio_and_85849 from The Little Paris Kitchen series on BBC2. My friend had a salted caramel slice, which I also tried and it was good. But my cake worked for me on a whole lot of levels - the colours, sweet-savoury flavours, the textures - see photo. The cake display was very impressive, with other options spread along the sweet-savoury spectrum. I note that the pâtisserie list on The Wolfhouse website just goes on and on and on, with 20-30 items on the list advertised as being available each day. This quote from their 'Savouries' webpage sums up the cheerfully inventive spirit, "When we run out of one thing, we find something else to cook. Simple! It's just so much more fun that way!" With so much inventive spirit, plus everything so well-sourced and made from scratch, I think we can safely say that this 30-seater café is a better option for the serious foodie than a lot of fine dining places. Plus, it is totally relaxed with great staff, and priced at not much above your average country tearoom. Highly recommended.

Staff are generally welcoming of almost anyone, whether a small family, large family, group of hikers, dog walkers, children. Everyone. The sign at the entrance even reads "muddy boots welcome" It's absolutely the best on a bright sunny day, table seating inside makes it an all year place to go if you're in the area.

It was just a matter of time before something on the events night emails from Inox would catch our…read moreeye. The event that caught our eye was 'Game Night'. I actually thought, "Oooo board games and food?!" You can tell I work with students because that was my first reaction. However, it was actually a celebration of game meats, pheasant and venison. I have been to the venue before, as we used it for a training day, but it is very easy to forget that it is at the top of the Students' Union. University car parks are available for free (if there are no barriers) after 6 p.m., so customers coming in for an evening event should be able to find parking close to the S.U. They are not open for dinner each night, just for events at night, but do have a lunch menu and also offer Afternoon Tea. We were a bit early, but were greeted, checked in, and then shown to the bar where we were able to order drinks. What is interesting is the fact that Mr. Snarky's reaction was similar to mine and other reactions I've heard... "It is very corporate." While it is modern, it doesn't quite have that intimate feeling that restaurants of this style typically have. We found a place to perch while having our drinks and waiting to be seated. I have to say that the service is really very good, very friendly... even when we were there for our training day causing problems :). We were seated near the window, although sadly we could not see much because of the bushes and trees in front of the S.U. They also offered a wine flight that provided a wine chosen for each course, so I decided to take part in it. The brought us two rolls and two mini Yorkshire Puds with a bit of gravy in the bottom. It was lovely. My first wine was brought out, it was a white wine that was really refreshing and a bit citrusy. The first course was pheasant done in an Asian style with Pak Choi (Bok Choi for my American friends) and a dumpling made with the leg meat. The pheasant was very nice, but the sauce was too overpowering. Not entirely sure what the sauce was made of, but it seemed like a thick soy sauce that was more bitter than salty. The dumpling, the part I was most excited for, was a good idea in theory, but in practice the outside bit of the dumpling was quite thick and the little bit of leg meat that was inside was a bit dry. However, I will say that the dish and the wine really went well together. For the second course, they brought out a red wine that was lovely because it had this hint of spice, great for a red meat, but there was a bit of sauce on the plate that was so sweet that it kind of ruined the wine. To be honest, I'm not sure what the sauce was because the only sauce it mentioned on the menu was a jus, which was there and lovely, but this was like a fruity puree that was far too sweet. The venison was served medium rare and it was beautiful...very tender. I was a bit skeptical of the Venison Faggot as I've never had Faggot before, but it was really nice, particularly with the jus. It was served with some kale and a fondant potato. By far my favourite course of the night, although again, that fruity puree was unnecessary. And dessert... was a Pear and Apple Crumble with Salted Caramel Ice Cream and Pickled Blackberries. The crumble was missing the actual crumble part... there was a bit of the hazelnut crumble sprinkled around, but there wasn't enough to call it a 'crumble' in my opinion. The apples in the crumble overpowered the pears, but the star of the show was the Salted Caramel Ice Cream. I told Mr. Snarky that if they sold pints of the ice cream, I would buy a few, which he agreed with me on, which is unusual because this is not a flavor of ice cream that he would choose. The one bit that was a bit off was the pickled blackberry... the blackberry was already a bit sour itself, but then to add the pickling on top, it was like eating a Warhead (you know those super sour candies). Overall, we did enjoy our night and while there were highlights, there are also some things that could do with some improvements. Around the time dessert was coming out, the club in the bottom of the S.U. started playing music and it kind of killed the mood and made us think it was time to head home, even though it was only 9 p.m. For the 3-course event it was £32.50 pp, and the wine flight was £19.00, so a bit of an expensive night out, but not bad. A bit of a strange place to have a restaurant like this, but would be happy to come back for another special event.

Amazing food! Everything is always beautifully presented with kind and prompt service. This is one…read moreof my favourite spots in Sheffield.

The interior is lowly-lit and intimate with an understated modern design which gives the place a hushed atmosphere without detracting from its social qualities. I visited on a weekday evening for food (they serve until 10PM) rather than booze, but I was impressed by the eclectic range of beers I noticed (Black Sheep, Peroni, Staropramen etc). Even more impressive was the food I was served (rump steak with peppercorn) - it was uncomplicated, like the rest of the pub, but it was downright delicious. In short, it felt cooked, rather than microwaved, something you don't always find in pubs nowadays. They offer the pub classics you'd expect, but also more classier, expensive options, meaning that the Fox succeeds in being both a pub and a restaurant at the same time. And the beer garden is great.

The ducks wear wellies here you know, good job with the rain we get. As a stop off, and a regular one too, it's the turn of the Fox. This is a great pub. Simple as that. It's an impressive stone building and equally beautiful inside. With the feel of a big roaming farm house or even small stately home (at a push), it's got a big fire and lots of wood. I'm a fan of lots of wood, it screams importance to me. Maybe I've watched Anchorman too many times though. You'll also get real ales, just the way you like them. You'll also get some excellent wines too and it's a real all rounder. As for the food, excellent. This is better than your usual pub affair. We're talking high end, good quality meats, fish and vegetarian dishes. It's not cheap but it's a class act and worth the extra. If you're looking to impress, the Fox will deliver.

Magical? Chemical?…read more The alchemist is not only a nice surrounding to sit in but the service and food are great and delicious. When we checked in and were asked if there were any allergies we made jokes about my husband's allergy to cinnamon - that we would not need to worry about out it before desert. We ordered a few items from the menu - which is a very delicious mix of classics with some twists (tempura fried fish and chips for example). Order was taken and a couple minutes later the manager came and said "I am sorry - but the sauce to the fish contains a bit of cinnamon" wow! We change the order of course and the manager came back to the table asking if we would be worried about cross termination. We have been not and everything went well after that. Great service. The food itself plays with the alchemist theme for example the chorizo meatballs come with a syringe to inject your own amount of cheese (what you think? Yes of course o injected the whole Syringe into the little delicious meatball duhh). The menu consist of a lot of small items which makes me so happy since I can have so many bites of different things and at the alchemist they are all worth it! And of course classics like burger, salads and sandwiches alongside their mains. The menu is not too big but literally has something for everyone. You have to try the crispy pork skins! After we had been told that the crispy fish contains cinnamon my husband learned they offer their "chicken in a basket" as a vegetarian version as well and that is what he got. Damn that is so good: A bed of chips (fries for our American friends) are surrounded by one of the best coleslaw I had in a long time (almost as good as Guy Fieri's if not even better) then slightly pan seared onions and peppers layer on top of the fries. Ready to be mixed in. Then of course a generous amount of chicken or in this case plant based chicken smothered in a sweet chili sauce. Not to forgot to mention that it came with an extra little bowl of dipping sauce. Delicious! We also had a mocktail which name I might not be allowed to recite here let's named it "virgin adult film star" what a perfect combination of fruit, creme and sweetness. Yummmmmm To end the night I had coffee and Choclate - any serving of coffee comes with a set of three pralines. What a way to end the night at the alchemist. Great atmosphere perfect service and delicious food and drinks.

After a bad experience at the New York Street branch earlier on in the year, where the restauraunt promised (and lied) about getting back to me, I didn't have really high hopes for this branch and while it was better than NYS (That wouldn't be hard), it wasn't fantastic by all means. The current systems in place for Coronavirus have gone far too far, this includes removing the gluten-free menu which can only be accessed by a QR code. The funniest thing was that their own wifi had blocked their website, meaning it comes up with an error message when I tried to view their menu. This meant it was impossible to see what was and wasn't gluten-free. I used my initiative and connected onto my VPN, which then allowed me to see the menu. The mobile signal here is pretty sucky especially towards the dining area, which meant I couldn't use my standard data. I decided to order the gluten-free Honey and Sriacha Chicken Burger, it came with Bombay potatoes which I find to be a strange combination. I would have prefered any other type of potato to replace the fries, which do contain gluten and the Bombay potatoes just don't seem to go with anything else on the menu including another option which was grilled seabass with you've guessed it Bombay potatoes. My burger was okay, while it was a good chunk of chicken and I did like the flavours, everything else just wasn't. The bun was doughy and came apart easily, the slaw on the burger was so hard I had to scrape it off, and the Bombay potatoes just tasted strange and I didn't end up eating them. In the end, I just ended up taking the chicken off the burger and eating that. I really wish they did a simple grilled chicken meal as the chicken was good, but it was ruined by everything else. I would say the service was a little poor, it was difficult to get a table at first, but I admit I did not reserve a table as they prefer so I'm willing to let that slide a little. 2* - The chicken was good but everything else wasn't, the menu isn't too accomodating for gluten-free especially considering they have no physical gluten-free menus right now and only regular menus and it's like a puzzle just to find it online while inside the restauraunt. Perhaps if they change the gluten-free sides and work on the points I have mentioned I would return, but until then it's unlikely. 2*
