This 17th Century Tolbooth was once a gaol and a meeting…read moreplace for local people and the magistrate, being also a collection point for customs dues. It stands on a corner beside the busy main road which runs straight through the village. Its walls are 3 feet thick and there are two windows high up in the gable. There is a clock tower and a stone bearing the part of a date, '17'. In 1874, lightning demolished the weather vane and 12 feet of spire, which were replaced at a cost of £84/17/9d. The iron neck ring and chain on the front, known as the Jougs, were last used in 1812 to secure a woman found guilty of stealing, before she was banished from the area! This Tolbooth has been considerably restored over the years and is in fairly good condition for its age. There is a small free car park immediately to one side, where I parked the other day to get out and have a good look at this fascinating old buidling and take photos.

Apparently, during a major refurbishment of the town centre in the 1970s, many shops were built over the top of the river known as 'Kilmarnock Water' (sometimes Marnock Water) and the statues in King Street show where the water runs under the streets a clever idea I think! I intend to take photos of the others soon to add here. I also want to find out some information about the sculptor I have drawn a blank so far.

Newark Castle is very well preserved and stewards are always very welcoming and helpful. The…read morehistory is told in the upstairs gallery and it is a very interesting history indeed. One of the bedrooms has original wood panelling bed recesses which show grafitti of the time carved into them. It's quite shocking and sad that graffiti of this time can be found daubed on the outside castle walls! Inside the castle scottish music is played in the grand hall which gives a sense of what it was like at the time. The castle is reputed to be haunted - ask at the gift shop and I'm sure the steward will tell you the whole story as well as show you some seriously spooky pictures!

Rainbow Bridge is an integral feature of the Art Park. Located within the grounds of House For An…read moreArt Lover, the park was completed in 2008. I dig bridges, and few more so than this one. I've spent many an hour playing on it with my nieces and nephew - the kids love the perspex, multicoloured panels - they rotate and provide a great opportunity to play hide and seek. I'd highly recommend a visit - especially to burn off some of the kids energy!

This ruin is part of the citadel built in the 17th century on the orders of Oliver Cromwell. The round turret overlooking the street and harbour was constructed in the 19th century by John Miller and is known as Miller's Folly. When Miller returned from India he acquired the Citadel and actually lived inside. It's less than a mile from the town and worth seeing if you're interested in history.

These spectacular Italianate buildings (splendid both inside and out) were finished in 1886 and the…read morebeautiful Victoria Tower (75m in height) can be seen dominating the skyline from many parts of the town. Unfortunately, the Municipal Buildings remain uncompleted to this day as a local man, Robert Cowan, refused to sell his business in front of the tower. As a result, the shop was inserted into one corner but was destroyed during a bombing raid in 1941, leaving the unusual effect still seen today. The bricks are different to the rest and this area has become known as 'Cowan's Corner'. These days the Municipal Buildings include the Town Hall and various Council offices. There are a few parking spaces nearby but it's very difficult to find a space. However, there is a large public car park only about 5 minutes walk away.

A steel walkway and steps have been built inside the castle and you can go up to the top and check out the view. Also, entry is free unlike many attractions. I have a great fondness for this ram statue! Often when driving to or from Scotland we stop in…read moreMoffat for a meal and usually park near to this wonderful ram (it is surrounded by parking spaces in the middle of the main street). This statue was sculpted by William Brodie (1815-1881) and presented to the town by the local businessman William Colvin in 1875 to commemorate the town's thriving wool trade. Other notable works by Brodie which can still be seen today include his marvellous 'Hercules', a bronze statue in Portmeirion, North Wales. The Moffat Ram sits on top of the Colvin Fountain whose water was used by men and animals for drinking. There were once iron cups for men to fill from the water spouts whilst the animals drank from the filled bases the lower ones for dogs and the higher ones for horses! The ram was constructed without ears and a myth (apparently without any foundation) circulated for long afterwards that Brodie committed suicide when he realised his mistake!
