They are surrounded by forestry plantation and composed mainly of quartz which explains their glittery appearance when seen at close quarters. One of the stones has been split by frost. Not far from the village of Kingarth, drive south along the A844, soon turning left onto a B road which runs down the centre of the peninsula. Continue along here until you see a signpost on the left pointing towards a forest track (it's possible to park here at the side of the road). The stones are found a short distance along here on the right on the edge of the Blackpark Plantation (hence the name of the stones). It is well worth it as it really is a little time capsule and is so well loved and looked after by the stewards that their enthusiasm is infectuous. There is a real loom and spinning wheel which the stewards work for you (in period costume)and you are given the opportunity to try it out too. Nothing has changed in the cottage since the 1800s - furniture is all authentic. It really is remarkably well preserved. It is also very child friendly. Kids are given treasure trove sheets to go through as they walk around. It has a lovely garden at the back to sit in on a summer's day. A great day out for all the family.

I was fascinated, the last time I was in Kilmarnock, to see some unusual 'water-themed' statues in…read moreone of the pedestrianised shopping streets but it took me some time to find out anything about them. Apparently, during a major refurbishment of the town centre in the 1970s, many shops were built over the top of the river known as 'Kilmarnock Water' (sometimes Marnock Water) and the statues in King Street show where the water runs under the streets a clever idea I think! I intend to take photos of the others soon to add here. I also want to find out some information about the sculptor I have drawn a blank so far.

** 200th review! **…read more It feels very weird reviewing what it basically a motorway junction on Yelp, but hey - who am I to complain? The best way to appreciate this area is from the centre of the pedestrian bridge that links the bottom end of Renfrew Street with Woodside Crescent and Woodlands Road. From here you get pretty good views of the whole area. As you can see, the motorway swoops through in an underpass, leaving a complicated web of access roads on the surface, as anyone who has attempted to drive from the southbound M8 to Woodlands Road will attest! The motorway construction was very controversial back in the 1960s as whole swathes of typical Glasgow Victorian buildings were demolished to create this motorway corridor that now basically cuts off the city centre from the West End. But we should consider ourselves fortunate, as this is one of the few parts of the accursed 'Bruce Report' that actually materialised. The Bruce Plan recommended that the entire city centre be demolished and replaced with a sterile Bauhaus-inspired collection of faceless concrete tower blocks with wide boulevards - (rather like Milton Keynes actually). Many of Glasgow's architectural gems would have gone, including Mackintosh's School of Art, the City Chambers, the Art Gallery and Museum, even Central Station. Thankfully the destruction at Charing Cross and Anderston caused by the motorway elicited such outcry from Glasgow folk that the rest of the city centre plan was quietly dropped, including the eastern leg of the motorway ring road that was to have been built down the High Street, and would have required the demolition of the medieval heart of the city and some of its oldest buildings. Looking south from our viewpoint, we can see spanning the motorway a rather odd-looking bridge with an office block on top. Originally this was to have been part of a high-level shopping walkway that would have extended right along Sauchiehall Street had the Bruce Plan gone ahead, with the required demolition of all those buildings. It sat as a bare concrete platform for many years before the office 'wing' was built in a desperate attempt to give it some purpose. Some of the other concrete monstrosities in the city arose as a direct result of the Bruce Plan; places like the Sauchiehall Street Centre, Empire House, and the infamous Red Road flats. To the left as we look south, the curve of the buildings sweeping round into Sauchiehall Street is Charing Cross Mansions, a wonderful façade that fortunately escaped the axe and now marks the start of Sauchiehall Street's shopping area. To the right is a hideous brutalist office block that replaced the Charing Cross Grand Hotel. It's worth taking a stroll down past this building to see the famous and quirky 'leaning fountain', erected in1896 in honour of Sir Charles Cameron, the newspaper owner-editor and Liberal politician. It's been leaning for quite some time now and seems quite happy about it. Turning now to the north, you are greeted with the sight of the splendid St. George's Mansions at the corner of Woodlands Road and St. George's Road. The large ground floor of this building has been inhabited by several short-lived businesses over the years - I put it down to the bad feng-shui - but the current occupiers The Chocolate Factory have been there for quite a while so they must be doing something right! The motorway curves around the back of Garnethill towards Port Dundas, but the view continues northwards towards the high flats of Possilpark and Springburn and a glimpse of the Campsie Hills beyond.

Hey, Charing Cross. You'll alright, you know? I mean, you'll never be my #1 favourite area in…read moreGlasgow, but you definitely aren't at the bottom of the list. The parts of you that people hate I actually quite like - you're like a multi-level maze of amazingness, in a way. To the uninitiated, there's a motorway that runs right through the middle of Glasgow which is incredibly handy, but it means the Charing Cross area is a little odd. So you'll be standing on the street in Charing Cross, and then underneath you is the motorway and further down towards Anderston is another level underneath that. Well trippy. Add on the fact there's an office block which stretches along Sauchiehall Street and it's all very bizarre. There's some nice spots worth visiting including the Mitchell Library which looks very glamorous at night time, the corner of Woodlands Road area has a few cafés and shops worth visiting as well as a couple of Chinese restaurants further along St George's Road. If you cross to the city centre side you'll find the lovely Big Top Toys as well as Maklab for all your geeking-out needs. Of course there's much more to Charing Cross but this area was where I explored recently. If you're travelling by car the first time you drive through Charing Cross will be an experience you won't forget - especially if you're trying to go from the north of Glasgow to Woodlands Road. Hold on tight, it's a bit of an ordeal!

This impressive and striking old building is a familiar sight in this part of the city. One of the…read morehistoric Merchant City buildings, it was built in the 1920s and designed by A. Graham Henderson as part of the redevelopment of Glasgow Cross. It has a very grand façade fronted by two large Ionic columns and featuring some interesting scupture by Benno Schotz. These days (rather a shame I think) the ground floor is simply a large furniture store. It's found at Glasgow Cross between London Road and the Gallowgate in the southeast corner of the Merchant City.

This is an easily accessible burial chamber at the top end of hilly Douglas Park, set alone in a…read morefield surrounded by trees - a very atmospheric place. Although much smaller than the original multi-chambered tomb, the orginal capstone remains, giving an impression of the scale of the original site. A must when visiting this area!

These spectacular Italianate buildings (splendid both inside and out) were finished in 1886 and the…read morebeautiful Victoria Tower (75m in height) can be seen dominating the skyline from many parts of the town. Unfortunately, the Municipal Buildings remain uncompleted to this day as a local man, Robert Cowan, refused to sell his business in front of the tower. As a result, the shop was inserted into one corner but was destroyed during a bombing raid in 1941, leaving the unusual effect still seen today. The bricks are different to the rest and this area has become known as 'Cowan's Corner'. These days the Municipal Buildings include the Town Hall and various Council offices. There are a few parking spaces nearby but it's very difficult to find a space. However, there is a large public car park only about 5 minutes walk away.

I walk through this beautiful wooded area everyday to work when I take the train. The woods are…read moresituated on the top of a steep hill, connecting Henderland Road and Ravelston Road by many trails and paths. The woods have many different kinds of old large trees, wild flowers and large thickets of berries. As you walk along the paths you feel like you are in a hallway of singing birds. I'm sure there are various wildlife that lurk in here too. Lovely carvings in trees must be from a local carver or a community project. If you are looking for a weekend place for a stroll or a unique place to walk the dog around Glasgow, Cairnhill Woods is a good choice.
