It stands on a corner beside the busy main road which runs straight through the village. Its walls are 3 feet thick and there are two windows high up in the gable. There is a clock tower and a stone bearing the part of a date, '17'. In 1874, lightning demolished the weather vane and 12 feet of spire, which were replaced at a cost of £84/17/9d. The iron neck ring and chain on the front, known as the Jougs, were last used in 1812 to secure a woman found guilty of stealing, before she was banished from the area! This Tolbooth has been considerably restored over the years and is in fairly good condition for its age. There is a small free car park immediately to one side, where I parked the other day to get out and have a good look at this fascinating old buidling and take photos.

One of the bedrooms has original wood panelling bed recesses which show grafitti of the time carved into them. It's quite shocking and sad that graffiti of this time can be found daubed on the outside castle walls! Inside the castle scottish music is played in the grand hall which gives a sense of what it was like at the time. The castle is reputed to be haunted - ask at the gift shop and I'm sure the steward will tell you the whole story as well as show you some seriously spooky pictures!

I've spent many an hour playing on it with my nieces and nephew - the kids love the perspex, multicoloured panels - they rotate and provide a great opportunity to play hide and seek. This ruin is part of the citadel built in the 17th century on the orders of Oliver Cromwell. The round turret overlooking the street and harbour was constructed in the 19th century by John Miller and is known as Miller's Folly. When Miller returned from India he acquired the Citadel and actually lived inside. It's less than a mile from the town and worth seeing if you're interested in history.

Unfortunately, the Municipal Buildings remain uncompleted to this day as a local man, Robert Cowan, refused to sell his business in front of the tower. As a result, the shop was inserted into one corner but was destroyed during a bombing raid in 1941, leaving the unusual effect still seen today. The bricks are different to the rest and this area has become known as 'Cowan's Corner'. These days the Municipal Buildings include the Town Hall and various Council offices. There are a few parking spaces nearby but it's very difficult to find a space. However, there is a large public car park only about 5 minutes walk away.

It's difficult to know how to 'rate' this!! As a road, you can drive across it much of the time but…read moreevery time there's some heavy rain the river, the Kilmarnock Water, overflows and blocks the road. Sometimes there's only an inch or two and the majority of people drive through it, though several times people have got stuck midway! There is at least one video on YouTube showing the fire brigade rescuing people from the middle of the ford! I have heard that cars have been swept away by the force of the water. I confess that I nearly got stuck once myself last winter when I tried to drive through thinking it was only about an inch deep whereas it was quite a bit deeper. It gave me a fright and I wouldn't dare to try that again when the road is flooded! For pedestrians, there is a footbridge to one side, but motorists have to find another way around if the road is impassible. Although a new £1m state-of-the-art road bridge was promised by the council back in 2009, nothing has happened so far. It is to also incorporate a new pedestrian footway and even a fish pass. All residents in the area (including myself!) are still waiting to see this marvellous new bridge!!

I have a great fondness for this ram statue! Often when driving to or from Scotland we stop in…read moreMoffat for a meal and usually park near to this wonderful ram (it is surrounded by parking spaces in the middle of the main street). This statue was sculpted by William Brodie (1815-1881) and presented to the town by the local businessman William Colvin in 1875 to commemorate the town's thriving wool trade. Other notable works by Brodie which can still be seen today include his marvellous 'Hercules', a bronze statue in Portmeirion, North Wales. The Moffat Ram sits on top of the Colvin Fountain whose water was used by men and animals for drinking. There were once iron cups for men to fill from the water spouts whilst the animals drank from the filled bases the lower ones for dogs and the higher ones for horses! The ram was constructed without ears and a myth (apparently without any foundation) circulated for long afterwards that Brodie committed suicide when he realised his mistake!
