Rothesay was an extremely popular tourist destination in the heyday of the Clyde steamers from the beginning of the 1800s onwards. It reached its height in 1913 when up to up to 100 steamers every day of the holiday season called at the town! This harbour has been renovated and greatly improved over the past few years. A new marina has also been added with many extra pontoon berths (run by the Bute Berthing Company) and the inner harbour has been dredged. The pier has also been altered to adapt to the new Caladonian MacBrayne ferries which arrive several times a day from Wemyss Bay on the mainland. The Waverley, the world's last seafaring paddle steamer, makes regular trips to Rothesay during the summer. It's such a lovely place to sail into with beautiful views of the picturesque town with its Victorian villas and lush green countryside beyond - the Isle of Bute is one of my favourite places to visit! read more
