I've only been to Stadstuin for one event now, de grote vrijmibo (Friday afternoon drinks), but it seemed nice. I know one of the guys that organise the vrijmibo and can definitely see why they chose this place as their home base for all the monthly editions.
There's a lot of space for bikes out front and it's kind of hidden away from the general public, it being just about a ten minute bike ride from the city centre but sort of hidden between old industrial buildings and a DIY shop. It does make it a somewhat intimidating place if you don't have an event you're attending when coming here for the first time because you can get this sense of "I have no idea if this is the place, the sign says it's the place, is this really the place??" and then you just get really confused. But if you're coming for an event it has more of a sense of "Is this really the place, sign says it's the place, yeah this is the place, yay!".
So, de Stadstuin turns into one of those in-the-know places, which I'd love to revisit on a regular day for it's fingerfood menu alone. (Onion rings!!!) And on the note of events such as the monthly vrijmibo, it's a really laid back venue with good options for a sort of beach on the side of the building and a dancing area around the bar inside.
Also not unimportant: the toilets are pretty decent for an event space.. there's definitely was worse in the world but these fall in my perfectly decent category. Thumbs up!
So, if you want to start off at an event, definitely start at de grote vrijmibo (https://www.facebook.com/vrijmiboutrecht/) and if you're a bit more gutsy than I am, try going there on a regular day and let me know so I can come with you to scarf down ALL THE ONION RINGS!!! read more
