Four of us had dinner at De Markt. We all ate salads (including the "mista") and pasta dishes. (Mine was the tagliatelle with duck.) Each of us was happy with what came to our table. De Markt has a perfectly reasonable selection of wines by the glass; there were also at least four beers on tap as well as plenty of bottled beers. I had a draft beer by Brouwerij Maximus; I'm pretty sure that it was the brutus. I basically loved the beer -- one piece of evidence for this is that I ordered a second glass immediately after finishing the first one. De Markt is nice inside (where we sat). The servers were friendly and came over quickly when our pitchers of tap water were empty or when looked as though we were otherwise needy. read more

This is one of my new favorite restaurants in Utrecht. It has a fresh look to it from the space to the menu to the decor. They have a patio in front and the back overlooks a garden giving you the illusion that you're not in the city anymore. The platters (Antipasti plateau) were HUGE and maybe the best deal in the city. You could share one of these and an appetizer for two people and be satisfied. We over-ordered and got the main courses, which were smaller plates (thankfully for us) and tasted really good. Hip place to go in Utrecht for some interesting combinations of food. I had a raw tuna pizza that was pretty nice but there were a lot of other things on the menu that I would have liked to try out as well. The place was decorated quite nice and the service was good. It felt quite local and not very touristy for being right in the center. read more

I have to give De Markt extra points for accomodating 13 people with practically no wait time. All they had to do was put together the tables. It was a bit past 7:30 on a Wednesday, but there were tons of people out on this sunny day, and I was impressed. I ordered the fried duck with lentils and other vegetables. Duck isn't very common in the US, so I thought it would be more European. It was quite tasty and chewy, and it reminded me of Peking duck a bit. I did find the lentils to be quite salty, so that is one area of improvement. The restaurant did have quite a variety of tasty foods, and my conference colleagues enjoyed it! read more

Restaurant De Markt is one of my favourite places for italian food in Utrecht: it's contemporary, delicious and just couple of minutes away from home. Since not so long ago Drieharingstraat became one of the most famous restaurant streets in Utrecht and it's swarming with different places, but be sure not to miss De Markt. I personally fall in love with almost any place that serves Vitello tonnato with fresh tuna and not the salty greasy tuna sauce. Vitello tonnato in De Markt is my all-time crush. The interior is inviting and personeel is welcoming, food is delicious and the check is quite democratic, what more do you need? Go for the location and not the food! Fairly decent meal, focus appears more on size than the flavor! Amazing sized portions for single person. When going with friends for dinner and drinks remember to order the sharing platter of appetizers, it's excellent! The seafood tagliatelle is also pretty good! read more

Came here for a work dinner after a conference at the jaarbeurs. The restaurant was a bit too crowded and quite noisy but what really bothered me was that they brought us appetizers of spreads that go on bread but it took ten to fifteen minutes for them to bring us more bread to eat with it. By that time everyone had worked their way thru the appetizers the best they could, but it was overall not a pleasant eating experience. read more

We had lunch there. The menu outside was very different to the one the gave us. They brought me wrong tea. Green instead of Earl Grey. And when paying the bill found out they brought starter for two though I've asked starter only for myself and it was on single plate that's why didn't notice it at the beginning. The interior is well designed and looks fashionable with hints of Italian style icons. The menu does not show many options but enough to make a good selection of fish, meat pasta and pizza. I ordered the soft crab tempura as an appetizer which looked nice when it arrived. The taste however was dominated by the fried material of the tempura batter and it was unclear what was inside. For a main course I took a salad with ham. The taste was excellent and the use of small potatoes made a difference. The ingredients were fresh. The two other persons at my table took the meat dishes, lamb and beef, both were excellent. We paid an average of 40 Euro per person for a meal that included appetizer, main dish and coffee. Our waitress looked after us and did a good job which is not always the case in a city where the majority of restaurants employ students as waiters. It is certainly a place to return too. read more

The food is good and the service is very nice. Diners have a choice among eating outside in front, inside, or inside in the back looking out at a lush garden. We took one star off because it was a bit pricy for what you get and some aspects of the dishes we tried were rather plain. read more

Making a dining choice in Utrecht is hard... because everything looks and smells so wonderful. Twisting and turning our way through the busy streets of the shopping district we turned down a crowded table filled alley. Having been to Naast De Markt a year before my friend was hoping I might be interested in checking it out. He was right! The menu was reasonably priced, the offerings were varied and there were available tables... all a huge plus on a busy late spring Thursday. We opted to sit inside just a table away from the windows which were wide open letting us soak in the noise and excitement of the happy crowds. Service was quick and chipper. We ordered an appetizer after just a quick glace and even though it took only a few minutes to receive it I had already forgotten what had been ordered and was delighted when I saw an artfully created plate of small delicate fried cheese next to a luscious basil foam and a not too sweet tomato chutney. For our mains he had ordered the Mercado which is a chefs selections of meat, fish and vegetarian dishes. With about 10 different items (9 actually as we got two salmon carpaccio - good thing- no fighting over it!) there was a bit of everything and we were impressed with all of it. The duck was better after a few grains of salt but the mango topping was perfect. I admit I was kind of horrified when I saw shrimp skewers with fennel with what seemed to be simply a bright yellow mustard drizzled on it but was honestly delighted when I found it to be a turmeric cardamom sauce. Its hard to say if I will return because of the sheer number of eateries in the shopping district but then again I saw a seafood pasta that made me want to go steal a bite. It seems I might just have to try Naast De Markt again. read more
