We started by sharing the mixed provincial appetizer with grilled bell peppers, tapenade, anchovie tapenade and more served in a wooden plank. My dad got the gnocchi in a slow cooked beef stew. It was excellent. I got the woodfire grilled rabbit that tasted great, but I do have to critique the rabbit was too cooked and dry. The Bandol wine was without surprise excellent! I recommend getting not just coffee, but the "coffee gourmand" as the sample deserts that they serve the coffee with were unforgettable.

I have a foodie bucket list, and on that list was eating bouillabaisse is Marseille. I can now mark…read morethat off my list after the wonderful experience of eating it at Abaco. My daughter and I were on a Mediterranean cruise and the thing we were most looking forward to was the stop in Marseille. We were up and ready early so we caught a taxi at the dock and rode into the main port. I had previously researched all the places to get bouillabaisse and kept coming back to Abaco as the desired destination. Abaco isn't in the main tourist area, it is more a neighborhood hang out spot, so we had a bit of walking in the city. We arrived at Abaco at 11:15 am. We knew it didn't open until 12 so we were prepared to settle down and wait. Shortly after we arrived, I saw a head poke up in the window and the door to the restaurant opened with the cutest owner, Ms. Jeannine, inviting us in. Walking into Abaco is like walking into your grandmother's house. And this grandmother wants everyone fed. Ms Jeannine didn't speak English and we didn't speak French. Her son spoke enough English that I was able to tell him I would like bouillabaisse and my daughter wanted salmon. I had no idea what salmon dish I ordered for her, but I knew she would like that. The salmon dish was house smoked salmon that looked amazing. It was a large plate so she was barely able to make a dent. My bouillabaisse was wonderful as well. The son explained how to eat and I nodded when he asked if I understood. I guess I was doing it wrong because Ms Jeannine came over and explained it to me speaking french and indicating with her hands. For anyone who stops by in the future, you are supposed to take a crostini and top it with a bit of the incredible aioli they serve on the side. You then drop it into the main bowl of soup. Then take some soup from the small bowls and pour it in top and then eat. It is a really wonderful soup. For desert we shared the chocolate mousse which was amazing. She served it with fresh cream. We were on a cruise and one of my favorite things to eat when I cruise are bagels and lox. Since my daughter had half her meal left, i asked to pack it up so I could eat it for a snack later. Alas, when we returned to the ship we were told we couldn't take carry out meals on the ship. In my state of panic of breaking a rule, I threw it away without even getting a bite. I will now live the remainder of my days upset that I didn't even get to try the salmon. One additional thing I noted is that when we were finishing up, a sole diner wearing a cruise card walked in to eat the bouillabaisse. I think this is the place that the foodies who do their research come to try real bouillabaisse.

The Perfect Pizza Nightcap…read more We wanted a pizza to close out the evening, so we walked right across the street from the burger spot to Bobolivo Pizza... and thank goodness we did. The smell alone sold us fresh dough, bubbling cheese, and real ingredients; we were instantly excited to get it back to our rental. There is something about that crust... thin, light, crispy edges with just the right chew... absolutely delicious! The ingredients tasted fresh and balanced, olive oil was present, no heaviness, just a quality pizza that didn't miss. Sometimes, simple is the flex... and Bobolivo proves that. If you're in Marseille and craving a solid pizza to end your day on a high note... this is the spot.

Also, the restaurant next door also had a patio and had a singer and guitarist out there so we were able to have some entertainment during our meal as well. Service was very friendly but since he didn't speak English and my French is elementary, there was a lot of pointing and repeating things until one of us finally understood the other. He was good about it though and laughed when I told him I don't speak French well in French. Just a heads up, the menu is entirely in French but if, like me, you have at least some grasp on the language and know basic food terms, you can probably figure out at least the main ingredients in each dish. If not, there's always Google translate. We enjoyed a bottle of wine with our meal, and received complimentary olives as a snack before our meal. As for the menu (which I posted a picture of) it's a lot of salads and grilled meats. My husband ordered the duck breast which was served with frites and a salad. The duck was nicely prepared to medium and had a tasty seasoning on it too.The meat was very tender, and the portion was also generous. I ordered the goat cheese salad (salade chevre) which had tomatoes, grilled onions, goat cheese atop small baguettes, fries, and cucumbers. The dressing was a sweet balsamic and was delicious. The salad portion was generous and ingredients were fresh. The location is several blocks back from the Old Port so it's mostly locals I believe that visit here given that we were the only ones speaking English at any of the tables near us. I'd absolutely return here for another meal in the future!

Not quite the famously amazing green sauce from Le Relaise de Venice, but different from the typical black pepper variety you usually get. This was clearly a mix of black and green pepper corns. First taste had a hint of juniper and was almost off putting as i tasted a bit soapy. But it tasted great on the steak. By the end of the meal, I was pouring the sauce over bread to eat more of it!!! The only downside was that the fries are not the thin french fries one expect with steak frites. My wife had the mushroom farfalle. Some restaurants will through in a lot of fresh mushrooms, but no mushroom water as it makes it very brown and very dirty looking. But, then it lacks flavor. L'Egoiste clearly used plenty of water from re-hydrating dried mushrooms, and the hearty mushroom flavour had soaked deep into the noodles. It was a very low key, very in expensive, and very delicious. Great for backpackers all the way to couples on a fine dining vacation who just need a break from the fancy food and want something simply tasty.

Because it's hard to wow the crowd of now. So when you do actually find such a place that brings that extra, a holiday for your palate, it should be celebrated! And that is how I feel about le relais. The dinner was a wonder, 5 courses, each wonderfully leading to the next, and ending with a dessert that didn't feel like an end but a new beginning. Long story short: ambiance-excellent. From location, to service, to plates, to setting-10/10 food-unforgettable Price-not cheap but when compared to similar in Paris or Aix de Provence or even other Marseilles establishments, very acceptable.

Not really sure why this was even suggested as a Michelin recommended restaurant…read more Although accommodating to our reservation need the day off, that was the extent to the customer service. Lacked detail, focused on a big group ignoring the little tables. The big issue for me is the lack of execution on the wine paring. For me when I order wine pairing I'm paying not for the alcohol but for the experience. They brought the food out but forgot the paring which I had to remind them 2x. Not great service! The first two wines were actually the same???? I did bring it up which was really uncomfortable and just excuses, not to mention the guy stating he will bring the last one before the last dish to make sure I get it for sure. Excuses but no "how can I make it better". The food itself was so plain and completely unfulfilling. First, not a fan of Wasabi yet it was in all the fish dishes . Second, the desert was a HUGE let down and I almost felt like I was being played a joke on (pictures below) 3 strawberries and a little tiny pasta?!?! My most regrettable Michelin experience EVER!
