We came here for breakfast on our last day in Amsterdam. On a hectic street consumed by construction, this tiny shop is an oasis of tranquility.
The menu is very simple - espresso drinks, apple pie and plain croissants.
We had one of each plus a hot chocolate and it was hands down the tastiest, most relaxed meal of our vacation. The apple pie was of a legendary, grandmotherly quality with extra cinnamon, apples cut up tiny and melting into the chewy crust. We shared a single piece and at one point my son defensively wielded two tiny forks in an attempt to secure a larger portion for himself and to hoard the ample whipped cream.
The drinks were hot, richly flavored and delivered down to our lower level table beneath the stairs by what I presume to be the owner, who also thoughtfully brought glasses of water on his tray.
The other patrons all appeared to be locals working quietly on their laptops, while we plotted our day around yet another train strike and battled each other in Connect 4 (there was also Scrabble and other games).
A true neighborhood gem! Be sure to stop by if you are staying at the Hoxton Lloyd. It is walkable from there. read more
