The Van Der Valk hotels are well known in The Netherlands. They get compared to Hiltons in the US. So a mid-level hotel.
Location wise this is near Oosterbeek, and not too far from the Kroller-Moller Museum, a short drive to the center of Arnhem, passing the Arnhem Museum of Modern Art along the way.
In 2012 I stayed here twice for a few nights each time.
First, I would give 5 stars for the breakfast spread they put out. It does cost extra, but its a fixed price and if you like breakfast well worth it. The coffee alone is very nice. The restaurant here is a destination restaurant and its filled with locals for lunch and dinner both. I have learned that the hotel chain actually started as a restaurant, which may be why it remains so good. I did have dinner there once or twice, and it was also very good. They also have a conference space so have large meetings in the hotel, which then gets catered food.
The rooms here are fairly large and pleasant. The bathrooms are very nice, they have been kept updated, roomy baths and showers. The beds are ok, not the best mattresses ever, but manageable.
If you are on the ground floor your room will have a small patio, which is very pleasant. Chairs, a table etc. If you are on a higher floor you will have a small balcony. Since I believe the facility is nonsmoking, this is where people go to smoke, so it can be hit or miss on having the door to your room open etc.
The parking lot is great and easy. The location of the hotel is just off one of the main highways, and I found it to be perfect, but I was spending time in Oosterbeek, at the museums as in a part of Arnhem near the hotel.
3 stars because:
The wifi is not free, and was really expensive. I found this to be annoying, but also ludicrous. Even then, it was not very good wifi in the rooms, so you are paying for something that was sporadic and frankly not very useful. They need to upgrade that system pronto. When you discuss this with the front desk they say - "its not our system, its managed by xxx company, you need to call them etc." Really? Its a service you offer, but you don't support it? Get a better system, make it free and call it a day.
They have an elevator, so you get onto that with your luggage and assume all will be well. Well, it may not be. The floors are not level and have stairs all over. 2 here, 5 there, 15 somewhere else. You get the idea. So walking with bags is really difficult.
I did not find the front desk people to be equally helpful. There was one who was terrific. But some of the others were rude, they would keep you waiting while they reviewed something on their computer, they were not very helpful, in general I just did not find them to be terrific.
