Mind you, as I discovered, when a train is cancelled, you can still basically get to where you want to go, it is just somewhat more complicated. Anyway, this was the interchange station we used to get to Arnhem, and even if we were going straight to Amsterdam we still would have had to change trains here. It is a larger station and Venlo, and even had a Starbucks, not that I actually went inside and got anything, namely because even though we had time to catch out train, it wasn't all that long.

Station Nijmegen is a pretty decent public transport hub. They have intercity trains here that head…read morein the direction of Amsterdam/schiphol as well as towards den Bosch/rosendaal. Plus all the regional busses connect here to the train network. There's also a pretty decent selection of shops to choose from if you're looking for a last minute book or food for in the train. It's also in a good location in respect to the historic center of Nijmegen if you're coming on a day trip or visit. It's fairly clearly signed and walking distance to all the sights.

Imagine being in a foreign country. Now imagine being there with your parents. Now imagine being…read morethe only person of the three who can speak the local language. You've got a train to catch, and there's some confusion as to whether you're in the right place. You want to go looking for the information you need, but you don't really want to leave your parents alone on the platform. So you bring them with you. You ask a few people, who seem less than interested in assisting you. Yes, it is odd for Americans to end up in Emmerich. It's not exactly the port of entry for many tourists. In fact, the only foreigners who regularly visit Emmerich are Dutch, and they're not there to see the sights; they're there to buy cheap gasoline. Having been dropped off by my brother's girlfriend's parents at the nearest to their house German city that had a direct train to Hamburg, our final destination, I felt like I really needed to prove to my parents that all those ridiculous German classes were worth something. So I struggled through it. And asked. And persisted. And asked more. And basically wouldn't take no for an answer. There's no real lesson in this. The train station is efficient, as are most German train stations, but it's also shabby. I won't say run down, but it could use some sprucing up. But who am I kidding? European train stations are often microcosms of their cities, which take on the personalities of their inhabitants, so all I'll say is that Bahnhof Emmerich is cold, unusually so.

Unfortunately, they demolished a gorgeous old building, which is typical of the city of Ede. I have yet to discover if they have also installed new bathrooms, always necessary when traveling, as sometimes you take more than two or three hours to get to your destination within Holland -- even with its excellent public transportation. Fortunately these days the trains are better equipped. Selfishly I would love to see an improvement at the station level as well. Parking is easy but a good five minute walk away. And free.

As the town was a fortress at the time, the station born with attack in mind: a wood truss construction allowed to be dismantled or damaged with minimal waste. 1896, the original station was replaced with a large brick structure designed by Eduard Cuypers. Neo-Renaissance style, with a second floor for railway employees. 1944 than, during World War II caught fire and burnt down. Never rebuilt to its former glory. 1951, new life in a more modern way, designed by Sybold van Ravesteyn. Happy to be passed in the midst of history, see next time!

Then again, I'm used to Utrecht which is in the middle of the country, so pretty much every train passes there. In Den Bosch, not so much. But, it's only a five minute walk and you're already in the city's centre!

Arriving in the afternoon and departing super early in the morning a few days later, I found the…read morestation easy to navigate with great signage. No problem scanning my ticket to get past the ticket barricades either time. My only complaint? Early on Sunday morning, there is not much open. The one shop is "groundside" and yes, my ticket let me scan out and then back in a second time thankfully. The station is clean, well lit and needs more seating for waiting passengers. If I could give a zero-star review, I would. The ticket system at Terminal 3RLN64 went down at…read more14:25, causing an issue with my ticket printing from the machine. The cashier who initially served me provided great customer service, but her colleague was very abrupt, aggressive, and rude. When the system went down, I was unable to receive my train tickets. I also have a railway discount that I can only get at the ticket office. I was charged twice. When they first tried to give me a refund, I was charged again. When I brought this to the attention of the aggressive colleague, she did not seem convinced that I was telling the truth, even though there were transaction receipts nearby and one in my hand. When I asked if I could receive a discount at another station, the colleague became very aggressive, waving her hands in the air and telling me that she had told me everything I needed to know and that I wasn't listening. I replied calmly, asking her why she was shouting at me. She interrupted me again. I told her I didn't understand why she was talking to me this way. The aggressive staff member then said she had already explained herself and that I was not listening. She walked off. When I asked the original cashier my initial question about whether I could purchase a ticket at another station to receive a discount, she kindly explained that the system had gone down across the whole network, so I might not be able to buy another ticket at another station. I was not told the system had gone down, only that the tickets were not printing, which is why I inquired whether I could purchase another ticket from another station. When I first explained that I was charged twice, the reaction I got made it seem like I was lying, even though the transactions on my card were processed twice. The aggressive staff member needs further customer service training. She is very aggressive and has poor customer service skills. She failed to listen and acknowledge the issue and was very abrupt about the situation. I am a tourist visiting Eindhoven, and this type of customer service is not a good reflection on the culture of the station. Unfortunately, I was not able to get the staff member's name because it was not visible, and when I asked, staff members were not willing to provide it. I was also told there was no manager available to discuss further what had happened. The aggressive staff member was a white female with short hair and she wore glasses. This incident occurred between 14:35 and 14:50 on 26/07/24 at Terminal 3RLN64.

It took me a bit to work out how to get out of this station, namely because they had those…read moreelectronic ticketing gates and all we had was a Eurail Pass. Fortunately there was a symbol on the pass to allow you to enter and leave these gates without having to hunt down somebody in authority that is willing to help you (especially since there wasn't anybody attending the gates). Mind you, I expected more from the Dutch, but such is life. Actually, I also got the same disinterest when I went to catch the train the next morning. On the other hand, this station did look like a space ship, which was pretty cool.
