There are intercity trains and sprinter trains which are slower or quicker because of the number of stops I think. We needed the 11:13 train on platform 5a to Uitgeest. We were t hungry yet but if we had been, the station has multiple places to buy pastries or snacks for travel. We only had to wait on the platform for about 15 minutes. The seats were comfortable and had options for 2 together or 4 facing each other for families. The ride was very smooth with only 2 stops before ours. You tap out at the platform of arrival at a little tap screen about waist height there.

Mind you, as I discovered, when a train is cancelled, you can still basically get to where you want to go, it is just somewhat more complicated. Anyway, this was the interchange station we used to get to Arnhem, and even if we were going straight to Amsterdam we still would have had to change trains here. It is a larger station and Venlo, and even had a Starbucks, not that I actually went inside and got anything, namely because even though we had time to catch out train, it wasn't all that long.

Plus all the regional busses connect here to the train network. There's also a pretty decent selection of shops to choose from if you're looking for a last minute book or food for in the train. It's also in a good location in respect to the historic center of Nijmegen if you're coming on a day trip or visit. It's fairly clearly signed and walking distance to all the sights.

Such a bad boy. The year before I ran away to America, I went to stay with my Uncle in Holland for a second time. These were trips of a lifetime because I was a naughty boy and Holland was a naughty place. We'd buy rail passes (my brother and I), and would spend the days wandering around Holland. We went to The Hague, to Rotterdam, and to Amsterdam several times. Also Arnhem and Utrecht. The starting point was always Veenendaal, either the Central station, or this one in the West. My Uncle lived a similar distance from both of them. He now lives in Northern VA, but back in those days, he was in Holland, and we loved visiting him there. The trains in Holland were some of the best we'd ever experienced, and still are. This station is quiet, suburban, and perfectly safe for two little kids running around Holland with no adults watching them, doing things that kids would never expect to do. I've been back to Veenendaal and to this station as an adult and it seems so tiny now. That's what she said.

It took me a bit to work out how to get out of this station, namely because they had those…read moreelectronic ticketing gates and all we had was a Eurail Pass. Fortunately there was a symbol on the pass to allow you to enter and leave these gates without having to hunt down somebody in authority that is willing to help you (especially since there wasn't anybody attending the gates). Mind you, I expected more from the Dutch, but such is life. Actually, I also got the same disinterest when I went to catch the train the next morning. On the other hand, this station did look like a space ship, which was pretty cool.

The architecture alone stands out: lots of glass and steel, tons of natural light, and a very open, airy feel. Even when it's busy (which it often is), it doesn't feel cramped or chaotic. Platforms are clearly numbered and well marked, and the electronic displays make it easy to see exactly what's coming next without stress. What I really appreciate is how practical everything is. There are shops, food options, and services everywhere, from sit-down restaurants to quick takeaway spots. Even better: each platform has its own small kiosk, so you don't have to hike back to the main hall just to grab a coffee, snack, newspaper, or last-minute essentials before boarding. It's also a major international hub -- you'll see plenty of intercity and international trains heading to destinations across the Netherlands and beyond, which makes transfers pretty smooth if you're changing trains. Overall, Utrecht Centraal manages to be massive, modern, and efficient all at once -- not an easy combination. If you choose the right exit, then you are pretty much in the clear since it's close by to a huge indoor mall and a 10 minute walk to the old city. As the town was a fortress at the time, the station born with attack in mind: a wood truss construction allowed to be dismantled or damaged with minimal waste. 1896, the original station was replaced with a large brick structure designed by Eduard Cuypers. Neo-Renaissance style, with a second floor for railway employees. 1944 than, during World War II caught fire and burnt down. Never rebuilt to its former glory. 1951, new life in a more modern way, designed by Sybold van Ravesteyn. Happy to be passed in the midst of history, see next time!

Bilthoven seems to be a fairly quiet village, part of the Utrecht municipality, and so it was a very small but busy railway station with only two platforms. I was there on a weekend, and the shop+cafe on the train station was closed. There were toilets, but they seemed to be locked. Entrance to the station was only thru one side, but there was a good number of turnstiles to enter/ exit. With only two platforms, it was easy to figure out which side your train was going to be coming on, so no complaints from my side on my experience using this train station! Yelp 60/ 2019
