We had to scope out a table. My cousin tried to order a dessert and they were out of all of them except what he got. I was overwhelmed here and didn't care for it. In Den Ouden Vogelstruys is a brown cafe with various claims to historical permanence. Take your pick 1700's...1800's...there's even a canon ball stuck in the outside facade labeled 1670. There are a half-dozen bars on this block all beckoning for your hard earned (or recently converted euros). I have sampled them all and In Den Ouden is by far my cuppa. This time I was not alone and wanted to get a second opinion. Kate was not disappointed. We ordered the 4 cheese plate (Limburger, Brie, goat cheese and bleu). Two wedges of each along with a French roll, 4 slices of fruit and nut bread, apple syrup and a salad of grapes, walnuts and rocket all for $13.50. We accompanied this with her local herbed liqueur coffee and my Le Trapp. We had anticipated this to be a simple bar snack but in fact turned into our lunch of the day. We in particular loved the paring of the apple syrup over the bleu cheese and the Brie on the fruit/nut bread. All was yummy and beautifully presented. This was a perfect meal to linger over and be thankful for your blessings. We will come back.

The service was also professional, yet relaxed without the pomp. And, the water was cheap. I think our bill stated just 5€. I hate it when fancy restaurants hit you hard for the water. Of course, the place was beautiful and the food was perfectly plated.

I have submitted a jpg of the bill and absolutely no contact has been made. \ Highly disappointed in the service. Food was good, service and managerial oversight were and continue to be extremely disappointing.

The staff disappeared for long stretches and when they did circulate they avoided eye contact. We asked for a couple items that were never delivered. The food itself was a mixed bag. The schnitzel was pretty dry even with the sauce and the frites were just ok. The salad with shrimp and smoked salmon was very good. There are too many other places in this town to dine so no need to tolerate poor service.

Their menu is inspired from all over the world, which can be tricky, but they manage to balance it beautifully. They serve their food tapas-style, or street food-style as they call it, so smaller portions that allow you to try a little bit of everything. A table favorite were the mini empanadas as well as the seafood gyoza. Very tasty! Also great were the Bao buns (the red bao) and the sweet potato fries. We also had the fried chicken and the gado gado, which were both good, but slightly less than the other dishes we tried. Together with a bottle of red wine, this was a surprisingly filling dinner and we really enjoyed our time here. Service was friendly and attentive, speaks German and English as well, so there were no communication issues. Great place, a little more on the fancier side!

While this restaurant's food, staff and setting were all very regal, perhaps it was a bit too formal for my taste. Don't get me wrong, I love fine dining! I just remember being 2 hours into the meal and we weren't even halfway through our courses. We had to ask to skip a few courses and ask for the dessert menu. Maybe this is very American of us (we've noticed that Americans enjoy dining out but tend to work through a dinner seating much quicker than the Europeans), as we saw many others who came before us and stayed after us. I understand it is Dutch culture to relax and treat dinner & drinks as a full-evening event. The food was fantastic, amazing chef! I can't express enough how intimate the restaurant is. I just didn't have it in me to sit through a 3-hour dinner:( Overall, lovely evening.
