I was kind of dreading coming here because with many vehicle inspection stations/DMVs in other states that I've lived in can be hit or miss. Fortunately this place was a hit. I had to get my work vehicle inspected in order to complete the registration since vehicles that are going to be registered in DC have to show a specific decal in the windshield. Firstly, I think they have really great hours. I went today, a Thursday, since they opened at 7am. It might not be beneficial for someone who has to go to work but it worked for me. There hours change based on the time of year, so check the website before you go. I pulled into the vehicle inspection station (VIS) promptly at 7:05am. I was expecting a wait, but to my surprise there was none. Zero cars waiting. They have about eight drive thru bays to inspect cars and once you pull around the back, the workers ask if it's commercial or personal and send you to one of the eight bays. I pulled right in and the workers told me to walk around the front and wait. Basically there are two stations. One worker hooks your vehicle up to a machine to check the specs and then your vehicle is driven forward to be weighed and other aspects tested. I think they check to see if your windows go up and down, what your emissions are like, and if your brakes work among other things. The whole process literally only took 4 minutes. I was shocked! The worker in the last station passed me a sheet of paper and I passed the inspection. What a nice experience and there apparently was no reason for my initial dread especially since my work vehicle is in impeccable shape.

Shout out to Misters Sean and Dwayne for great service!!

If you come in during off peak hours, it will be a quick drive through experience. The gentlemen were nice and patient working with me, possibly because I was very big and pregnant but I imagine it wouldn't be much different if I weren't. I was actually at the DMV waiting in line for my turn to register my vehicle but also needed an inspection. I left the DMV, got my inspection, and went back without losing my spot in line and without having been called yet.

It's 2pm on Saturday. They don't close until 3pm. The holiday is on Monday...

Usually a quick and easy process. I think the fact that they are just a service station and doesn't handle any other transactions, especially involving money makes it all a breeze. There is online scheduling, but I've had decent experiences with an appointment or not. Now the kicker is to figure out their schedule and fees. I arrived on a Saturday at 2pm when the sign says it's open. There was an additional sign that said "CLOSED FOR HOLIDAY". I found out from someone else that they will close on Saturday if Monday is a holiday. I was told this was on the website (I didn't check), but dealing with DC, you have to cross check everything, twice, even three times. Any time you pull through the station, IF YOUR CAR DOESN'T PASS INSPECTION you are accessed a $35 fee. Beware of trips there for inspection sticker extensions. Every 20 days you are late for your inspection, you are accessed a $20 fee. There are more finicky conditions that you should be aware of the first time you don't pass. They will hit you over the head with your transactions and fees when you have passed and will be ready to renew registration. February 2016, the station is still under construction so your experience will be an outdoor one, no bathrooms, but port o potties if needed. THE STAFF IS FRIENDLY. It's what's helping me to give them 3 stars....

I arrived just before 9:30am last Friday after receiving the flash flood and tornado watch warning. Was that the most cautious thing to do? Of course not. However, I knew it would be pretty empty given how terrible the weather was. Before arriving, I had visited their website and completed their questionnaire that ensures you have your checklist of items to bring. This was very helpful in making my visit run smoothly. I prepared all the documents that were on the checklist and went to get my ticket at the check-in counter. The clerk ran through the items I would need and handed me C135. When I sat in the lobby, I did not see any "C" tickets on the screen and began thinking I would be there forever. Fortunately, it went by very quickly. Within 45 minutes, I was approved for my Real ID driver's license, had taken my picture, paid the fees, and was back home. Things ran very smoothly and I really can say it was because I went through their webpage and responded to the questions that populated the most accurate checklist of items I would need for my visit.

I highly recommend going there instead of the SW location. Also, don't forget to bring a credit card, cash, or check - they don't accept tap payments. It worked out for me, but I still think the Georgetown location functions so well because it's in a wealthy neighborhood whose residents have the time and resources to demand better. I also received an email survey from the Georgetown location, which tells me that the SW staff are turning people away with zero documentation, which means they can never be held accountable for poor service. Everyone in DC deserves a functioning DMV, not just the people who live in NW. +++ My experience at the SW Waterfront DMV today was completely unacceptable. I moved to DC from Massachusetts a few years ago, but still had my Massachusetts license as I don't own a car or drive in DC. When I lost my MA license, I figured it was an opportunity to get the correct license and a RealID at the same time. I brought all the requisite forms: two bills showing proof of DC residency, the application, my up-to-date passport, and proof of driving ability - a "true and attested driving record" from the Massachusetts RMV with the registrar's signature, intended to be used for official and court purposes, which I requested by mail for $20 as instructed on the state's website. The DMV agent took one look at the driving record and said, "This doesn't look like the ones I've seen." She said it didn't "feel" like the correct form, and when I told her this was what the RMV provided and that there was no other form they offered, she still refused it. I asked if she had an example to compare it against, and she said no. I asked her what I was supposed to do, and she suggested I call the RMV. When I told her I had, and this is what's available, she replied, "Well, you'd better find the license, then." The manager at the front was no help either, and said it was policy not to accept a form without a stamp, even if it's the most official form a state offers - the implication being, apparently, people from Massachusetts simply aren't allowed to move to DC. I get that this is a hard job, and it's the week before the holiday, but... I'm a person who can work remotely from the waiting room and take PTO if necessary. I don't have kids, so I don't have to worry about childcare, and, while infuriating, multiple visits to the DMV fundamentally only costs me time. That's not true of everyone. Denying service for something as arbitrary as a form not 'feeling' right and requiring people to come back until they can get someone to take them seriously is just going to make people trust government less. My takeaway, if you need a form from another state that they don't immediately recognize (like VA or MD) bring other materials to make your case - the envelope it came in, the receipt from any fee, instructions from the website, a customer service email confirming it's the right form. Even then, plan to have to go more than once, until you get someone who's willing to listen to you.

This has been one of the most challenging, uninformed, and incompetent government office experiences I've encountered in a business context. * OTR requires businesses to register/maintain good standing with the Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection (DLCP), yet they refuse to accept DLCP documentation for corrections or account updates. This creates a frustrating catch-22 where agencies seem misaligned and uncoordinated. * There is no effective escalation process -- standard customer service channels do not escalate matters, and follow-ups often lead to the same unhelpful responses. * Many representatives have been rude, dismissive, and outright unhelpful, providing inconsistent information and showing little interest in resolving the issue. * Overall, the process gives the impression that OTR is not interested in supporting new businesses or taxpayers in the District of Columbia.
