Online the place looks great and interesting so we decided to hit it up around 9pm because it doesn't close until 2am. So when we walked in the place was pitch black and the vibe was really off. We had to pay $20 a person to enter which at first I was confused because I thought this place was games, bars, music, and vibes...not at all. So we were walking around and the crowd I'll just say wasn't the type I wanted to be around. Only one bar was open and the music was weird. So we decided to leave and when I asked the person who was taking the money what was going on tonight they said an event. Now, this event was not posted anywhere on their website or social media. So I would caution going at night or call beforehand because I don't think I would want to come back because it was nothing like it is portrayed online.

There is no charge for entry although donations are very welcome. One could almost go exclusively to visit the gift shop and the museum cafe as they are both so nice and full of fun things to feast the senses on. But for now I will stick to the museum. You start on the third floor and work your way down. There are displays for all ages and levels of interest, from very technical linguistics to basic "repeat after me". There's karaoke for the brave, joke telling for the dads, a Photo Booth for the tweens and an absolutely epic library in which fairy tales come to life. There's also a section on advertising and it's lures. The café is really fabulous and delicious and gives you a true taste of the global plate that America thankfully has adopted. I thoroughly enjoyed my West African chicken and shrimp curry. I was only sad that it was too early in the day on a weekday and with kids to enjoy one of their dozens of fantabulous looking cocktails! I'll have to go back for that!

Its all about the Monet, Monet, Monet…read more... I've always enjoyed the works of Impressionist Claude Monet, and here you get to experience his works projected on floor to ceiling screens. There's a short section with informational panels about his life and his process (TL:DR- LOL). Unexpectedly, there is also a section that recreates his studio and his garden at Giverny. (Note: I visited his house several years ago and obvs they have taken liberties here). Enough about this, what about the immersive experience? If you've attended the Van Gogh experience, I think that was superior. Maybe it's Monet's artwork, but projected like this, it's not as interesting. Maybe it has to do with the proportions, but it's a lot more impressive when there are just a few large paintings than several. And the music quite frankly was putting us to sleep. However, it is quite interesting when he revisits the same location and repaints it over the years. And of course the water lilies are gorgeous. The abrupt ending with caricatures of (famous?) people was a strange choice to end this experience. The projection area is set up nicely with chairs, benches and bean bags and everywhere you sit is a good spot for viewing. Just settle in and get comfortable. Optionsl to purchase a VR experience. The gift shop is tasteful and has lots to choose from. When is the Klimt show, I'm still waiting.

This exhibit was different from the Van Gogh in some respects. The first room we entered a Victorian-like parlor with furniture and artwork. From there, you go into a garden with hanging flowers and blue and green lights. From there, you go into the main room with the artist's works animated in a half-hour loop. There are bean bag cushions on the floor and numerous sling chairs on which to sit. From there you go into the last area, where you can select a drawing based on the artist's paintings and color it in. (The crayons were clearly left over from the Van Gogh exhibit and needed something to make the points finer.) Unlike the prior exhibit, there was as scanner we used to take a picture and display it on a screen. You can also pay extra to do a VR experience, but as my boyfriend and I didn't care for it the last time we went, we skipped it for this exhibit. Feel free to take as many pictures as you want; just don't use your flash or disturb other people at the exhibit. Although I didn't like the Monet exhibit as much as Van Gogh (maybe because I like Van Gogh's oeuvre better), it's still worth a visit and a nice experience. I hope to see this type of exhibit with more artists.

A Little Movie Theater Nostalgia Right in the Neighborhood!…read more I really wanted to see If I Go Will They Miss Me, and since it wasn't playing at my usual dine-in theater, I decided to visit the Angelika Pop-Up right here in Union Market -- and I'm so happy I did! Now, this definitely isn't the posh moviegoing experience I've become accustomed to. There are no cocktails being delivered to your seat or plush recliners to kick back in, but honestly, that was part of the charm. It brought back a nostalgic feeling of simply going to the movies -- grabbing your popcorn and candy, finding your seat, and enjoying the film. Even better, the concessions were surprisingly affordable! I came specifically to see If I Go Will They Miss Me, Walter Thompson-Hernández's 2026 drama expanding on his 2022 short film of the same name. I've made it a personal mission to be more intentional about supporting independent films from Black and brown creators, and this one reminded me exactly why. The film was shot beautifully. The cinematography alone was worth seeing on the big screen, but the story also pulled at my heartstrings. I thoroughly enjoyed it and was glad Angelika gave me the opportunity to see a film that wasn't available at my usual theater. The experience may be no-frills compared to some of the newer luxury theaters, but there's something refreshing about that. Sometimes all you really need is a good movie, popcorn, candy, and a big screen. I know Angelika is technically a "pop-up," but as a Union Market neighbor, I'm hoping it sticks around for a while! Having a local theater that gives smaller and independent films some screen time is definitely something worth keeping.

When you walk in the exhibit, it is an open space with a large sunflower backdrop for pictures. After you check in, you can take a more professionalized photo, chose your background and purchase it at the gift shop for $10. It was not crowded at all which is great because it gives you time (and space) to read about the artist Vincent Van Gogh. I learned a lot and saw more replicas of his artwork. Only reason why I had to deduct a star is because there were some evident errors in years posted of his work. One piece said he created a masterpiece in the 1900s and another said he did artwork in 1837 when he wasn't even born yet lol. The best parts of the immersive experience were the 360 room of theatrical lights, the 10 minute Virtual Reality ($5 p/p) and the staff I met along the way. My bonus dad and I spent about 30-40 mins in the room watching the story of Van Gogh's background. I was amazed at the different screens displaying so much I didn't know where to look because every screen was covered. The strobe lights on the floor were emulating birds and rain. The VR was well explained and made comfortable by Perry. At the end of the VR, you then walk into the gift shop and explore a few souvenirs. We met Donnie and Paige there who had wonderful, vibrant personalities. I purchased our pics from the booth earlier and he bought a flask with shot glasses. This was my 1st time at this exhibit and in this area that I saw many cool places to check out later like Metro Bar, a movies theater next door, & an indoor pickle-ball/rollerskate place. The dinosaur exhibit was right next door so don't be frightened if you hear a tyrannosaurus while checking out Van Gogh's work :D

I think I was expecting there to have been more actual rooms in 29rooms, and for the delivery to have been more art-centric. I didn't care for the long lines at each display, (although that was to be expected) and the minimal artist engagement. I think it would have been nice to meet a designer or two, or maybe to have had an employee to provide insight into the installations...but perhaps I'm a bit old-fashioned. After being completely disoriented (and borderline violated) by the unexpected bag search and wanding that preceded entry, I was a bit perturbed. Likely because, in my mind, the bag full of makeup and random necessities that I was carrying would have been a more dangerous weapon than the sealed can of soup that I had on hand (after coming directly from work and not having had lunch that day) should I have been so inclined to use my purse as a weapon. Obviously neither of which I would have assaulted anyone with, but security I guesssssss... Price wise, I didn't think the tag matched the quality; $20 would have been just right.
