I debated whether to write this review because I'm generally not someone who leaves reviews, but I felt it might be helpful to share my experience since it was a bit mixed. When I first arrived, the initial interaction with the receptionist wasn't very welcoming. They asked me something while I was walking up to the desk, and when I mentioned that I didn't hear them, they didn't look up from the computer or repeat themselves. Fortunately, another staff member nearby stepped in and was very kind and helpful. I went in for a curly cut to clean up my split ends and even out my layers. I also wear a hijab, and they were very accommodating about that, which I appreciated. During the consultation, the stylist explained that styling was included in the service. I specifically confirmed that this wouldn't be an additional charge because I only wanted the haircut I booked and didn't want any add-ons. She was attentive, answered my questions, and overall the interaction felt pleasant. The appointment itself took about three hours, which was longer than expected. The stylist apologized several times and mentioned that she was taking longer because she chose to take her time with the process and do everything she felt was needed. She even asked if I needed to be somewhere because it was taking so long. I appreciated her efforts. The confusing part happened at checkout. I was initially told I would be charged for a medium/long haircut even though my hair was quite short--barely at or just above my shoulders. The agreement was also for short hair, which my hair is. When I asked about it, she said, "because we charge for the time spent on hair." Mind you, she chose to do it and I thought it was part of it. She also said that because I hadn't had previous haircuts, that was why it took longer. That explanation didn't feel accurate since I came in specifically for a simple clean-up of the ends and to even out my layers. What made it more uncomfortable was that others parts of our earlier conversation were brought up to justify the higher charge. It felt a bit weaponizing to use things like me mentioning I hadn't had recent haircuts as a reason for increasing the price, especially when the service I requested was straightforward. The price difference was around $50 or more, which caught me off guard. I was prepared to pay it, but after noticing my reaction, she changed the price back to the originally expected amount and said, "I'll do the regular agreed price today and we will see in the future." The whole interaction made me feel pressured and uncomfortable, especially since pricing had not been discussed that way beforehand. Unfortunately, after getting home and looking more closely, I also noticed the cut itself was uneven in some areas, with some pieces longer than others. Because I wear a hijab and the hair is already shorter than I prefer, I can't easily get it corrected elsewhere without making it much shorter, which has been frustrating. And to be clear, my right side is longer than the left and it's very obvious. To be fair, the salon does offer a complimentary 15-minute adjustment if something needs to be fixed. I appreciate that policy, but personally I don't feel comfortable returning for it because I don't trust it. Overall, there were positive aspects -- the stylist was attentive and the salon was accommodating of my hijab -- but the checkout experience and the final result left a bad impression. This was my first time getting a curly specific hair cut and it was phenomenal! I booked an appointment with Nelly. Thanks to Dina who helped schedule via text as I was very happy to get this earlier June appointment instead of in August. Nelly took the time to explain how to take care of my hair, things to look out for, and what she was doing. Each step of the cut, wash, and styling process she explained her thoughts and checked in with me. She also talked about the products she used and how I could use them at home. I learned a lot! Normally getting a hair cut brings me a lot of social anxiety but she was very easygoing and never judgmental. I never felt small for not doing anything with my hair or not having a routine. I was able to ask her questions and she responded genuinely which I was grateful for. Regarding location, I had trouble finding it at first but it helped to know it was a corner unit and there was a sign on the door. I won't go anywhere else, honestly. I refuse to been worked on by someone who A) doesn't have curly hair or B) has curly hair but doesn't wear it curly. I don't know how to describe the belonging I feel when everyone around me in the salon has curly hair. I did a big chop with Sandra and the curl care I receive is first class! Been maintaining with them since. We've transitioned from DevaCurl products into Innersense (which I was on the bandwagon on for a while) and my hair care education is further enriched. GO HERE IF YOU HAVE CURLY HAIR!!! 90% of the salon's clients have curly hair. They do something called a "curly cut" which means you style your hair per usual, and they'll cut your hair as styled so that it'll have the best chance of ending up the way you had imagined. (After cutting it dry they wash your hair and restyle to confirm /adjust the result.) They can also do a normal haircut if you don't like the idea of a curly cut, but I thought that idea was really cool. The process of hair care and hairstyling really seriously, and I know as a person with curly hair I just really want someone to care what they're gonna do to my head before they do it (which, fairness is possible to find other ) and be confident with curly hair (which has always seemed harder to find). If you are a new client, they'll have you fill out a questionnaire first. The questionnaire was super thorough, and really inclusive (same examples, they ask if you wear a hijab and require privacy, what your pronouns are, whether you can walk up to the second floor so that they know if they shouldn't book you an appointment requiring you to go to the second floor.. things like that). I was concerned that because of the questionnaire being the first step, that they were so busy that they'll never get back to me, I'd have to wait a long time to hear back. The level of attention and detail Rian put was incredible almost like cutting one hair at a time :D talked to me at every step, answered my questions, took my requests seriously (in the past I was always told: no that won't work!) Then the styling stage, explaining the techniques and really taking the time to make sure every curl looks perfect. I rarely give 5 Star Reviews, as I reserve those for exceptional experiences. If you have curly hair, even factoring the 6 month wait list, DBS Salon is an exceptional experience. The owner, Sandra, is incredibly knowledgeable and friendly. I am a client of her apprentice, Rian. At my first appointment, I had asked for warm caramel highlights after I'd turned my hair completely dark. Rian helped to soften up the color, give me the highlights I wanted, and made my usually-frizzy, super fine and unruly curls bounce like they've never bounced before. I've seen Rian three times now and every time, I walk away from my appointment more in love with my curls than the last time. Rian has taught me how to properly care for and style my hair in between appointments, and even though they're specializing in vibrant colors that pop and wow, they pour just as much love, thought and attention into my "regular" highlights. Rian is amazing! Each time I visit, ALL clients walk out of there with amazing-looking color, cuts and styles, so I am more than confident that you'd be in excellent hands with any stylist on the team. But I'm biased towards Rian :) It's so hard to find a place that does curly hair well, and usually high reviews on Yelp are unreliable, but this place lives up to its reviews (actually, I think they're a little low). This rating is for Sandra. She is amazing! This was the first time I have ever loved and appreciated my curly hair. She really knows and understands different kinds of curly hairs and textures. So the cut she gave me was a perfect mix of what I wanted and her insight on curls. She cut it dry first and then adjusts after your curls set. She also recommended the perfect products when I said I don't like the gel, sticky or other gunky hair products. So all she used was a spray in conditioner and one styling cream which is a total game changer for me. Nelly did an "Awwwesome" job on my hair. She listened to how I do my hair wash and she suggested how I can improve. The whole session was almost two hours - so, prep up if you have medium length, thick hair. Hair trim was around 1 hour.The wash and drying took almost 1 hour. Nelly made sure my hair was completely dry (she picked my cues on my sinus issues). She had to take two dysons (almost like Arnold in Terminator ;)) and start diffusing my hair. My hair after the wash was so amazing that the patterns stayed until the next wash. I was comfortable with all styles that week from free hair to pony. I wish DBS has even hair wash sessions - you know just in case I have a party/vacay planned I can rock my curls. read more

Using pictures, we had a couple video calls, and she was great at giving me little diagrams and instructions to do cut and temporary color. She has an Amazon affiliate page, which helped me buy the right kind of scissors. She also guided me to hair products that wouldn't ruin my hair and has some for sale locally. Both my husband and I were very slow and meticulous about cutting each other's hair, but the result was great! She was very attentive to what I wanted. For my consultation, we started with a picture of what I wanted and asked what I liked about it. From there, she asked about my hair and daily hair routine. She didn't want just a cut and style that looked good when I left the salon, but one that I can recreate and maintain on my own. She included me in every decision, ensuring to deliver exactly what I wanted and educated me throughout the entire process. She named every product she used and even gave me a hand held mirror to watch and learn what she was doing. Long overdue review for my wedding hair and make-up by Sandra. I found her on Yelp. I was going to do a trial hair and make-up day (but the distance just did't work out for me) I arrived on the day of my wedding and brought a friend. She was able to get a last minute hair style by one of Sandra's co-workers. Sandra made me feel right at home on a stressful day. I had sent her a photo of myself and a couple of styles I was thinking of beforehand, and she said "no problem" My hair is notoriously thin and hard to stay in any up-do. despite much hairspray and many pins, towards the end of the wedding it was falling out - but this is not on Sandra, just my damn thin hair. My make-up was perfect as well, not overly done but pretty and natural (for an old broad like myself!). If you are looking for a heavy super glam red carpet look, this is not for you. I came in with a scary ask for any stylist: I wanted to chop 8 inches of my hair to donate it. Cue the alarms that would make most people quite nervous because every girl loves her hair, and you don't want to be caught between her and a "short hair don't care" gone wrong moment. Mehr made me feel comfortable from the start as it was very clear that she knew what she was doing. I got a deva cut and she also styled it afterwards using the deva products. I absolutely love how my hair came out. I'm so glad to have found a hair stylist in Sunnyvale that knows what they're doing with curls!!!! Cannot recommend Mehr enough.
