This was my first time getting a haircut from Kim, and I'm so happy I found her! I'm extremely picky about my hair and love keeping it long, so I actually hadn't gotten it cut in over a year. I came all the way from San Jose to Sunnyvale specifically to see Kim because I had heard so many great things about how good she is--and she absolutely did not disappoint! I've been to this salon twice before and had very good experiences with Helen and Kim. The salon isn't the cheapest, but I've found their prices to be fairly reasonable compared to other salons in the area. Unfortunately, my experience yesterday was very different. I had another stylist, and from the beginning, I wished I had waited for either Helen or Kim. The hair washing and conditioning was extremely rough. She repeatedly scratched my scalp and got water all over my face. I have long hair and specifically asked for a blunt cut just below my shoulders with long layers. The final haircut isn't terrible, but it's not what I asked for. Instead of a blunt cut, it ended up being more of a V shape with layers. While cutting my hair, she used a men's hair clipper to remove most of the length and then seemed to roughly chop at the remaining hair. The entire haircut was also very rough. She repeatedly pushed and moved my head around throughout the appointment, which made the experience uncomfortable. When she asked how I liked the haircut, I didn't say anything because, while it wasn't a completely bad haircut, it simply wasn't the length or style I requested. At that point, I also didn't want to spend another 30 minutes being handled so roughly. I was charged $75 for the haircut, left a $10 tip, and was also charged a $2 fee for paying with a debit card. I was surprised by the additional fee and would recommend the salon review its policy regarding debit card surcharges. Overall, I would still recommend this salon for a trim or haircut if you book specifically with Helen or Kim. Helen is kind, quiet but takes her time and passion in her work. Kim is conversational, kind and does a fantastic job. Based on my experience, I would not personally return to the other stylist. Unfortunately, I'll now be visiting another salon to have the haircut corrected, which means spending additional money to fix a cut that wasn't what I originally requested. read more

I went in for a cut color and hot oil treatment with Evan. He did a great job with everything else but the cut, I wanted only an inch cut instead he chopped at least 3 to 4 inches off of my hair and put way too much layered in my hair then what I asked for. I've had a few haircuts at Sunny Salon and today was my first time requesting highlights. Ivan did an AMAZING job and I couldn't be happier. He exceeded my expectations, hands-down. I typically color my roots at home and it had been at least a year since a round of balayage/highlights, so I was in desperate need of adding dimension to my hair color. I prefer a natural, more subtle highlight and try to avoid chunky or jarring blocks of color. He did such a great job. Ivan doesn't speak a lot of English so I'd recommend you bring a photo or two of what you're looking for to simplify the process if you don't speak Vietnamese. Others did help us translate a few times and it all worked out. Beyond the color, I'm really happy with the cut as well. Ivan was efficient with time and I was in and out within 3 hours including the highlights, root touch up, a relaxing head massage, haircut and styling. I am shocked that this place has good reviews. When you visited I was one of 3 and all of use seemed unsatisfied with the service. I went in for highlights. I should have just left after I explained that I wanted to have the roots covered. Then she said ok so I will add highlights and I will not touch the roots. That didn't make any sense to me because my hair is already pretty blonde. So I re explained. She said that I didn't have enough out growth for highlights (this also doesn't make sense) and it would be better to do all over color. I was not opposed to this since my hair doesn't have the highlighted look anymore. Plus she seemed reluctant with highlights. (Why didn't I leave?!) The end result was my roots were yellow. I saw myself in the Mirror and I told her that it's too yellow. She said no it will look better when dried. I told her I didn't think so. Either it needed to process longer or it needed toner. But I had it dried and yes. It's yellow. She then said that she could tone it. I said no I wanted to leave. I had to be very blunt about no haircut. "Just a little bit ?!" No. I had to be a little assertive with her. Ok I'll dry it more. No Ok I'll finish it. (Grabs a flat iron) No Then she runs at me with a bottle of I believe hairspray. I had to get out of there. So I paid and reluctantly tipped because she was staring at me. As I left she yells out "great color". What a mess. This is not my place. read more
