There is so much to say about Dawn, but the best way to really capture the essence of working with her, is to work with her! Dawn was fantastic. Due to Covid, we had to reschedule our wedding and had to find a new photographer. A friend recommended working with Dawn and the rest was history. Dawn walked us through what the new schedule would look like, what photos we wanted, and understood how we wanted photos to look. We wanted a more natural, "candid" picture. She was able to adapt to our individual needs. Even before the event, she was extremely helpful, welcoming and addressed our questions in a timely fashion. She also asked questions that helped her understand the unique situation she was asked to take photos for (small wedding, personal premise). When it came to the wedding, Dawn was fantastic. She immediately started scouting for an additional photo spots to ensure she would get the best view point. This was no small feat, she walked a good distance to the tree line and into a small forest. She really wanted to maximize her working area. The photos of the prep time, ceremony, dancing and speeches captured the magic of the evening. Her photos really speak for her craft. To close and probably the most important reason why we're giving Dawn a sparkling review (outside of the photos of course) is that she truly was a pleasure to work with before and during the event. The stress of changing and planning a wedding three times in a year was overwhelming. Dawn was able to fix one of our problems and became an asset to the team. I have been meaning to write this review for some time, and as we're approaching the one year anniversary of working with Dawn, I think the time is now! My husband and I hired Dawn for our 12/31/17 wedding, and it was one of the key decisions to our wedding's success! (You can find my previous review for her after our engagement session somewhere on this Yelp! page, too - it is also a very resounding endorsement.) In short, I will tell you what I told her when she delivered our wedding photos: "I am so amazed. The angles, the lighting, the expressions you caught are incredible. I am so thrilled and humbled." In long, Dawn is an expert professional who will take care of you emotionally and photographically for whatever big day you hire her. If she's available, hire her. Hire her right now. If you have to, change the date just so you can work with her. From the first minute, Dawn's expertise came forward as we - on the first phone call interview - plotted out what our schedule would look like. She even referenced the sunset time, just so she could be sure her estimates were good ones. That amount of detail and care lasted throughout our process, and created for us a sense of ease on what can be a stressful day. She is everywhere, but unobtrusive; she is creative, yet asks for direction and input; she is careful, yet spontaneous. And she is so skilled. Whenever I get compliments on the wedding, the photos are always one of the top two things that people gawk over (we had a live band that rocked, that's hard to compete with...or else Dawn would be #1 every time). I hopefully will never have to plan another wedding, but if I do, Dawn will be the first call I make. In our interactions with her post-wedding, she has continued to provide excellent information and service. I never felt pressured to purchase prints or books through her, and she has been consistently active and willing to help when I had questions. First off, five stars to Amanda Z! Without her review, I'd never have known about the amazingly talented Dawn Roscoe. Dawn was our wedding photographer, and she also did our engagement shoot. We had met with two other photographers, who were great in their own right, but we immediately "clicked" with Dawn. Her personality put us completely at ease, and her photography style was exactly what we had in mind. Initially I didn't even want to do an engagement photo session. I'm not at all photogenic (believe me, that's not false modesty, but a fact) and I'm not very comfortable posing and having my picture taken. My then-fiance convinced me that having an engagement shoot would be good practice for taking the wedding photos, and would give us an opportunity for Dawn to get to know us better and vice versa, thereby resulting in better photos. As usual, he was 100% correct. We wanted our engagement photos to not be too "staged," so we chose to shoot around our neighborhood, where's there's unusual backdrops and lots of natural settings. At best, I was hoping for a few photos that I could "live with," but they all turned out beautiful. I was blown away. Fast forward to our wedding, and again, Dawn nailed it. Melanie S. and I had Dawn do our wedding in October of 2014. We recently received our photos and are busy posting and sending them all over. She and her team were fantastic, and we could not be more pleased. Months before we looked at several photographers who all were rated highly, but we felt a certain connection with Dawn's photos and with Dawn. It took a little bit of study to see how she differed from the others, because all the portfolios at first glance looked lovely. But I encourage anyone looking for an event photographer (or videographer, for that matter) to take the time to sit with those portfolios until you can tell the difference and feel which one seems to "fit" - that, plus the chemistry you feel with the photographer and the other practicalities involved (rate, packages, etc.), should be your guide. As Mel has stated, the engagement shoot was great for both the pix and for getting to know each other. I believe it paid dividends at the actual wedding. She also had great ideas about where to shoot prior to the event. Being city folk for decades, we wanted an urban feel and to be able to shoot close to our venue (The Hotel Palomar). Building off our engagement session (see Melanie S. review) we leaned on her for suggestions that went beyond the "LaSalle Street Dip" that we had seen in many other wedding shoots. I recommend strongly taking advantage of her eye, as several shots that we thought might not be very special as we stood to be photographed turned out to be striking images. And the photos are lovely - she captured the day pretty unobtrusively and with high technical skill. For example, shots taken in low light (e.g., during dancing) show people clearly without looking "lit". Our only regret is that we did not have her shoot more - had we been more organized we would have had a more extensive list of informal shots for her to take, but as it was it was pretty fabulous. A last note - when we got our flash drive in the mail with all our pictures, it came in a lovely gift box with a card, as though it were a precious keepsake instead of a simple memory stick. A small thing, but a thoughtful reminder that Dawn understands what the pictures on that thumb drive really represent. Highly recommended. read more

In my opinion, the wedding photographer is perhaps the most important component of a wedding. There is so much time and energy poured into this one day that it would be silly not to document it well. Also, wedding planning sucks. It's exhausting. I hated it. So, spare yourself a ton of stress by hiring Dawn. Dawn is very easy going, which is so refreshing. You don't want an anxious photographer raising your heart rate all day. But don't mistake her calm demeanor for indifference. She is dedicated to her craft, and will provide you the highest quality of pics, which is what's most important. I have some friends that skimped on the photography for their wedding in favor of spending more money elsewhere. Don't do that!! Do not hire some college student, or someone guaranteeing you great pics for $500, because you're going to get mediocre results. Maybe you won't regret it right away, but 5 or 10 years down the line when you're skimming through that wedding album... Our reception was a tricky shoot. In the evening, when the sun was going down, and in a glass conservatory. If we went cheap, the lighting in the pics would have been terrible. But Dawn's a real pro, and she captured everything beautifully. We are completely thrilled with how our pictures turned out, and it's just icing on the cake that she was so fun, and easy to work with making our day a lot less stressful. But rest assured if you happen to be a control freak. Dawn will meet/talk with you as often as it takes to ensure your satisfaction. She gave expert input on any suggestions we had, and offered some great ideas herself. She can even offer advice and/or suggestions on other aspects of your wedding like catering and location because she's seen and done it all. I am a lover of all things photographic. True story. When it came time to plan our wedding, I knew that this particular vendor was one that I would fret over. And fret I did. Until I met Dawn. Her easygoing manner and passion for portraying emotion on film made me like her instantly. After our first meeting, I was sure that her portfolio jived with the photographic vision I had for our wedding. (Some people are all sorts of concerned about centerpieces and the like? I couldn't care less about that. I had a photographic vision.) My request: uniquely urban photographs. I had seen one too many "dips" in the middle of LaSalle Street to want that for my collection. While that photograph can be undeniably beautiful, I tend to be a little...different...and I wanted our wedding photographs to reflect that. We chose Chinatown for the scene of our engagement photos. The architecture, the vibrant colors, and the urban feel lent for a beautiful backdrop for us to have photographs for wedding-related purposes. More than that, we became comfortable with Dawn. She shoots in a very natural way, minimal posing, and captures the raw emotions that just aren't there in overly staged and posed photographs. We loved our engagement photos instantly and knew we would be in for a treat for our wedding photographs. As the time before our wedding grew nearer, Dawn worked with me closely to set up locations for our photographs before the ceremony. Since we had limited time between the ceremony and the reception, we decided to have a first look photographed. Dawn really listened carefully to my expectations and wants for my photographs. Dawn photographed our wedding in September, and I cannot say enough great things about her. Of course, the wedding pictures turned out spectacular -- very creative, artistic, romantic. Some of her ideas seemed a little kooky at the time, but it's amazing what cool pictures resulted! ...Like, for example, I'd wonder what she was doing crouching down in the middle of the Hora circle snapping shots, but the photos that resulted were some of the most hilarious and fun we have. I am completely floored with our wedding pictures and have not been able to stop looking at them for the two days since I got the proofs. When it came to looking for a photographer I searched high and low and interviewed several people. I was looking for someone with an editorial eye, who could do edgy, gritty shots, but also could do traditional photography. I found Dawn through various searches and knew instantly when I looked at her website that I wanted her for our wedding. In our first meeting I confirmed she was the one. Her work is amazing and she is so personable. We talked through the details about what was important to me, back up plan if it rained (which it did!) and details about the flow of the day. Dawn is super responsive to questions and concerns. My now husband is not too keen on photography and "staged" photos and Dawn was incredible with making it feel natural and fun so he didn't even question what was going on. I had a final meeting with her about a week before the wedding to finalize everything and sure enough, it all went exactly as planned. On the day of, Dawn and her awesome second shooter Kelly were extremely prompt and efficient. They made sure all bases were covered. They took amazing shots of the preparation with us, were never in the way and just seemed like part of the group and the day. Our limo driver had no clue where to go for location shots and Dawn was great at directing him to the locations for shooting. The day goes so fast you never know what to expect when you get a finished product, but all I can say is the photos brought tears to my eyes and made me relive the day all over again. Dawn has an impeccable eye, she's fantastic with editing and she captured every major and not so major moment perfectly. This review is loooong overdue as I have a tendency to hemm and haww over how to best express myself, but I realized that words really can't do Dawn's photos justice. It's all about capturing the moment. I thought Dawn's website and galleries were beautiful and are what caught my eye but what sealed the deal for us was the homework she did before our Wedding day. The questionnaire, the site visits, all the little details she worked out ahead of time to make sure we got all we needed on the day, and she REALLY listened. We had a tight schedule, tight budget and lots of people and Dawn made it work. I love the way Dawn seemed to be everywhere at all times, capturing moments you never get to see in the hustle and bustle of the day and she does it all with grace and serenity and passion for her photos. Dawn was an absolute dream to work with. When I was searching for the perfect wedding photographer, I wanted to find someone who had an artistic eye but could still take the photos that would make my parents happy. I was smitten after I visited her website and saw dreamy photos and engagement sessions that took place near graffiti/ mural walls - this is my kind of photographer! They were extremely flexible (helped our niece and nephew join the group picture fun), organized (coordinated a mess of family photos :)) and personable (Aaron had the group super impressed by memorizing all of the bridal party's names in the first 10 minutes of being onsite)! Dawn's photos captured the emotion and spirit of our day perfectly and we couldn't be happier with how the photos turned out. My husband I had hired Dawn for our engagement photos and wedding photos. If you have any reservations about hiring her, forget them all! She is very easy to communicate with and makes you feel completely comfortable in front of the camera. She had awesome location suggestions for engagement sessions. We ended up going to the Gardens at the Art Institute, and we were very happy with how they came out! Very candid and captured the love between my then fiancé and me. We were hesitant about the engagement session, because we didn't want them to look too staged. However, we are so happy we decided to do them! We got to know Dawn, and Dawn got to know us. Also, the pictures are so adorable! Not cheesy! Now comes the most awesome part! Our wedding was on February 14, 2015. Coldest Valentine's Day in decades in Chicago! She was a trooper and also convinced us to do outdoor pictures (after extensive researching by Dawn and myself for indoor locations), and we are so happy with that decision! Her assistant, Aaron, was also a super star! Getting on his knees in the snow...and ice when my husband decided he wanted to play a little ice hockey! Also, right before our "first look" my husband broke his button on his suit jacket. In a normal situation, this would just have to do for the rest of the day.. ceremony and all! However, Aaron had his own sewing kit and fixed it before the outdoor pictures. Needless to say, we were impressed. We ended up needing an extra hour of their service at the reception, but Dawn and Aaron were nothing but happy to stay for us. Highly recommend Dawn.. and if you can, please do get an extra photographer, because it gives you a lot more variety in the end. Especially if guys and girls are getting ready separately. It would not have been the same if we didn't capture my husband and all his buddies getting ready too. Also, if you are given the option of a flash drive or a digital file, go with the flash drive! My review is long over-due! I just wanted to recommend Dawn after she shot my July '16 wedding. We absolutely loved our photos and Dawn was extremely discreet while photographing! We absolutely loved that her package included both the engagement sessions as well as the wedding day. I hired Dawn as my photographer for both engagement and wedding pictures. I interviewed quite a few photographers, as these pictures were one of the most important aspects for my wedding. I ultimately decided on Dawn based on her professional, friendliness, easy-going personality, and level of skill. She is extremely down to earth and I loved working with her doing both occasions. She had a ton of ideas for pictures, but also let us do our own thing and create our own backdrops. I was a little worried that I would have the cheesy, cookie-cutter images that seem to be everywhere but I found that Dawn's pictures were very original. Dawn is an absolutely wonderful wedding photographer! We chose her for her artistic and photojournalistic style, as well as for her ability to capture the beauty of natural surroundings (we love the outdoors and wanted our pictures to reflect that). Dawn Roscoe has a certain knack for truly understanding you as a couple; much more than you could ever convey in words. This 'knack' extends to your guests as well. Dawn loves what she does and it shows, and what she does is much more than 'take pictures'. She's artistic, amusing, charismatic, engaging, and intelligent. She is the catalyst that makes an ordinary wedding epic. Her vision and professionalism stood out among all others. She can 'read' a group and conceptualize the best shots in the blink of an eye. All this without ever making anyone feel uneasy or left out, and certainly never against any impromptu goofing around. Guests' commented on how friendly and fun she was and that it just seemed like she belonged . I could go on and on about how easy it was to work with Dawn, her incredible responsiveness and inconceivable flexibility. For our wedding, she had an assistant that was marvelous as well (Steve Koo), and they made a great team. She is well respected and it is easy to see why. We worked with Dawn for our wedding in September of 2011 and couldn't be happier. From the minute we met with Dawn, she was professional and went out of her way to understand the type of wedding we were having as well as our expectations and ideas for photography. We had a blast at our engagement session and received many compliments on the unique places/ideas the pictures showed. On our wedding day, Dawn and her assistant blended right into the day and helped with everything from organizing family for group photos to providing direction advice to the bus driver on our location shots to assure we had enough time to get in everything we wanted to. I can't speak highly enough to the photos she took. She captured every important moment from the day, including some incredible shots of details, of my husband and I, and of the real interactions between friends and family that were happening throughout the day that he and I weren't able to witness ourselves. Every photo that was taken was unique and different from anything I've seen and again, we've received a ton of compliments from friends and family on Dawn's work. One of Dawn's biggest strengths is her attitude and ability to make everyone involved in the wedding feel comfortable. I have to say, both my husband and I are not huge picture takers and usually feel we look "awkward" in most photos. Dawn made us feel incredibly comfortable and I think it shows in our photos, it's one of the first times we are both happy with how we look because we look like ourselves! I would highly recommend working with Dawn and I personally hope to work with her again or recommend her to my friends/family for their future needs. Dawn was an excellent wedding photographer - we have already recommended her to friends who have weddings coming up this year. She was very easy to work with, especially because we had a large wedding party, and also a big wedding with both of our very large families. Dawn was great about keeping the photos moving along, both when we were getting ready, and then throughout the day. We really needed someone to keep our group directed, and Dawn took care of that. Plus, the photos turned out absolutely beautifully - we have so many great photos to choose from, ranging from more traditional family portraits, to some great outdoor shots of just the two of us, to really fun, hilarious photos from the dance floor. Strangely, I don't really remember seeing Dawn during the reception, but she still managed to take so many photos of our guests, it was like she was everywhere all at once. Wedding photography is very expensive as we all know - I found that Dawn's prices fell in the mid-range of photographers that we were considering, but the quality of the prints (and the quality of working with Dawn) were at the very high end of the spectrum. read more

My first regret with this review is not writing it earlier! Dawn and her colleague Tori shot photos for our wedding and they were spectacular! First we did an engagement photo shoot that my husband was not exactly looking forward to. However, we both had a BLAST! We laughed the entire time and we attribute that to Dawn making us feel so comfortable. On our wedding day, Dawn shot the girls and Tori shot the guys at their hotel. They were both amazing! Dawn is so easy going, fun, and incredibly professional. She gives you direction when you need but then after looking at our final pictures, seemed to really blend into the background b/c there were great shots taken when I didn't even notice that she was around. They had great recommendations on where to take pictures during the winter months when outdoor lighting is limited. We were married in December and to be honest, at the time of our engagement it didn't occur to me that winter would have little to no sun in the afternoon/early evening time frame. Dawn reassured me that this wouldn't be a problem. At one point, I just surrendered to the fact as there was nothing I could do but hope for the best. Our final pictures arrived and I was very anxious yet nervous to see them. OUR PICTURES ARE AMAZING! Dawn and her team are creative, professional and very artistic. Our friends have commented on the style of her photos and everyone has sent compliments. Her personality is wonderful and she is by far the best photographer I've ever used for anything. Her style is what makes her so amazing. She has a knack for balancing professional traditional wedding photography while adding a creative edge. I'm so thankful we chose Dawn. Picture Perfect. Dawn did an amazing job capturing our special day. My husband and I had our engagement session with Dawn and our wedding day. Dawn is extremely professional and a perfectionist. We began this process by sitting down and discussing our styles, likes/dislikes, and who we are with Dawn. From there, we worked with her to decide where we wanted to do our engagement session. We wanted a fun, urban feel...Dawn helped us find some really neat spots in the Brideport neighborhood, where we took some fun shots outside of the ballpark. She also led us to some cool, industrial spots that would later turn into some awesome shots! Leading up to our wedding, we had to decide where we wanted our photos to be taken with the wedding party. We had no clue. So, Dawn suggested the garden at the Art Institute. We trusted her, so we quickly agreed, happy we had one less thing to think about. These pictures turned out great! We took some serious, traditional poses and then mixed it up with some fun, silly poses which allowed our wedding party to kick back and be themselves. On the way to the reception, our limo stopped at a bridge. Dawn captured the most amazing pictures of us on the bridge. It screams city wedding. These have turned into some of our favorite pictures from our wedding day. From the preparation shots, to the cake shots, to the ceremony shots, to the intricate detail shots, Dawn captured it all. She has a fabulous eye for what looks great. If I ever need professional pictures again, I would definitely call Dawn. She is nothing short of spectacular. read more
