Lovely lamps, overstuffed chairs, couches - the only thing missing was a fireplace. :) Then.... After I got my computer/etc. settled (near the table that has a "Quiet Room" placard on it, which made me happy because I get distracted easily), I discovered the ladies who work at the information desk (just 20 feet from this area) are non-stop talkers! Now, I completely understand the need for an information area to ask questions, and talk daily tasks, etc., BUT they never stopped chatting. (I see a Seinfeld episode brewing here!) I tried to ignore it, turning my headphones up, but I continued to hear the one talking to customers on the phone (and not using her quiet voice). I waited and tried to talk to her nicely, but she did not get off the phone and I had to go. I did mention my dismay to one of the nice ladies and the book check-out desk. I cannot understand for the life of me, WHY they would put and INFORMATION desk, where people talk, just 20 feet from a quiet reading area????? This makes absolutely no sense to me, and it made me angry! And yes, I did check out the "quiet study rooms", but they were all taken. This library needs to move the information desk (which is right in the middle of the library) to another part of the Library, and also strategically put up some soft partitions, maybe. Just an idea. While in the process of packing and moving, the kids and I took a break from visiting our library. I didn't want to borrow material and then possibly loose items during the move. The Graubner Library is located just north of 30 Mile Rd, on Van Dyke and was the closest to our new home. On our 1st visit I was throughly impressed. Not only with the size and amenities available at this public library but with the staff, that was more than welcoming, friendly and helpful. They signed me and 3 of my children up for our own library cards. My kids got a kick out of having their own cards, as this was a first for them. Since moving to our new home we have been to this library a half a dozen times, in just 8 weeks. We have borrowed approximately 30 items, including books, magazines and DVDs. Can you tell we really love the library! This library, as with all other libraries I've been to gets 5 Stars from me. How can they not!? This is a FREE service and resource center available to EVERYONE!! Kids and adults should really take advantage and make use of your public library. People "read" too much on their phones/devices. I've been saying, for years, books will soon be extinct, and then what!?! That would be a sad day, to not have anymore documented text/reading material. It will be a hard sought after thing like the Bible in the Book of Eli. (Haven't seen it- go to the library and borrow it! Fantastic movie with Denzel Washington) Pick up a book. Turn real pages. Read to your kids and elders. Read for your own knowledge and take yourself on an adventure of the imagination. Borrow a book on a hobby you want to start or something you want to learn to do. Support your local library and tell the librarians Thank You for all they do! Side note, this library has an amazing kids section, offers MANY free clubs, events, activities for both kids and adults. It also has tons of PC for your use. DVD rentals are FREE and don't have late charges. There is a 24 hour drop box for returns. Oh, and in case you're forgotten what a library is- cuz you haven't stepped foot into one since grade school----" a library is a collection of materials, books or media that are easily accessible for use and not just for display purposes. It is responsible for housing updated information in order to meet the user's needs on a daily basis. A library provides physical (hard copies documents) or digital access (soft copies) materials, and may be a physical location or a virtual space, or both. A library's collection can include printed materials and other physical resources in many formats such as DVD, CD and Cassette as well as access to information, music or other content held on bibliographic databases." If you've never visited the grounds of the C.S. Mott Estate, you probably should at some point in…read moreyour life. One of the most attractive and well-maintained properties in Genesee County, if not all of Flint, the estate is home to a rather lovely apple orchard and gorgeous gardens. If you're into horticulture/gardening on any level, then you will love the grounds. Occasionally, there are events hosted on-site for the public and I believe those are usually free. If you're any kind of Flint historian, you will note that a couple of scenes from Michael Moore's well-known documentary, Roger and Me, were shot on the estate. Here in Flint, we have the patronage and generosity of the Mott family to thank for many of our treasures in the cultural center and the family's donation of the Mott Estate is no exception. The C.S. Mott Estate is a definite must on any sightseeing tour around the city for tourists and is a cool place to visit from time to time for any local. It's definitely a bit of "local flavor" around these parts.

The Mott family has (and continues to) enriched the area so much through their generosity and dedication to the people of Flint. The estate and tours are just one example of how they do this. The tours of the house and garden are free (with reservations) during the warmer months. The docents are very friendly and knowledgeable and do their best to give visitors a feel for the family's charitable contributions to the area over the years. The house is warm and welcoming - the absolute opposite of the Biltmore Estate in almost every way. I, for one, view this as a great thing. Don't get me wrong, it's a gorgeous home but far more modest in scale and design than most of the other historic estates I have visited. You get a real sense of how the family lived - the guides will tell you during the tour that the home was designed for living rather than as a way to show off the family's wealth. The grounds are open to tour without reservations, but I strongly recommend making a reservation so that you get the most out of your time there. Very close to the Flint Art Institute (another local jewel).

A slightly above average experience when it comes to dealing with the local post office…read more We all know how frustrating it can be to do business at the post office. Be it standing in line, arguing about the merits of overnight delivery, ascertaining what happened to damaged or lost packages, we've all been there. When it comes to local post office locations, this one rates slightly higher than a few of the others around town. If I must use the post office (and let's be honest, we all have to every so often, even if we try not to), this is the location around Flint that I prefer to use above any other. I'll break the good and bad of this particular location as follows: Parking- it's woefully inadequate and the lot appears to have been laid out by someone who was stoned. There's too much unused "green space" where vital parking spaces are needed and no reason for it. The space between rows is so narrow that anything larger than a Mini Cooper dare not scoot through (especially in the winter during heavy snow, which piles up and narrows the rows to about half their original size). Yet, there's a considerable swatch of land untapped for parking. Hmm, go figure. Customer service- it's largely inconsistent, but has been better lately. The lines have traditionally been very long and they have a habit of only opening that last "special services" line if there is a line of epic length extending out the door (it happens more often than not) or a bizarre customs inquiry that requires attention. However, lately the lines have moved quicker than normal. I think they might just be doing their best right now to deal with the Christmas onslaught. Time will tell if the gridlock will make a comeback. As for pleasantness of the employees, they are super nice and always courteous, even apologizing when the line gets bogged down. Expediency/Accuracy- well, if you mail anything from this location, be it a check you owe the IRS at tax time, a Christmas gift, everyday mail, packages from Amazon, etc, chances are it will actually make it to its destination on time and intact. Problems with slow, lost or particularly damaged mail/packages have been ongoing at other USPS locations around town, but not at this one. In other words, if you do a lot of online shopping or have important documents or packages to ship, do it here and forgo the downtown Flint locations. What you send from those locations will either arrive late or disappear entirely. I wonder what the "Dead Letter" sections of some of those branches are like. I'm pretty certain some of my lost mail is there. Convenience- this location is fairly convenient in many respects. It's large, the doors are always open day or night, they are open on Saturday (Sundays in December to handle the Christmas holiday), they sell packing accoutrements, like tape, boxes, packing materials, etc, as well as gift wrap, bags, cards and so on, they rent P.O. boxes, and take passport photos. However, it would be nice if it wasn't so hard to make a left turn out of the parking lot. Car accident, anyone? Like I said, this location is passable and obviously better than other USPS sites in town. It's not great, but it's okay. It beats some of the downtown Flint locations on E. Boulevard, Flushing and Saginaw streets.
