Are you looking for a dentists' office with terrible communication skills? Koch and Crossley is the…read moreoffice for you if you'd like to be frustrated and embarrassed every time you show up at their office for a scheduled appointment. Here's a taste of what could happen to you, should you choose to let them be responsible for your dental care. I've had multiple fillings done at their office, with at least two of them resulting in re-dos because of the poor work done the first time around. I was even contacted after one of my cleaning appointments after they reviewed x-rays to come back and get another one repaired at no charge. Flash forward to beginning of January, I show up for my daughter's cleaning appointment and present them my new insurance card. My employer had switched providers for the new year and the informed me that they did not accept my new provider. That was fine. I had them cancel any of my family's standing appointments so that we could find a new provider that would accept our insurance in the area. However, they kept my appointment to fix that single filling they did incorrectly at no charge. I confirmed my appointment when the reminder came through and didn't hear anything else from them. I come to the office for my appointment and no details were confirmed at the check-in window, I was never called up. So I get back to the exam room with my tech and I ask her to please make sure that everything is okay with my filling being done at no charge still, because that was the original agreement and since they don't take my insurance anymore, I didn't want any surprises after they were already done working on me. I saw her review my chart where it said the filling was to be done at no charge on at least two different entries, but then she said that since it had been over a year they would no longer be able to do it at no charge. She consulted with the doctor and he confirmed. My question was why I hadn't been contacted previously and notified of this change to an already agreed upon price/procedure and they didn't really have an answer. My time taken off work isn't valuable to them and apparently, as a patient here, you are supposed to be familiar with all their internal rules and policies. Needless to say, I left and didn't get the filling replaced due to their inability to communicate their internal policies. Everyone I spoke to just had an excuse but no reason as to why this wasn't communicated to me even a month ago when they confirmed they were keeping the appointment. If I had known there was going to be a charge, or a statute of limitations on when they would honor their word, I wouldn't have bothered keeping the appointment or going in and wasting my time.

Spoke with an assistant that informed me I would need to pay over $100.00 just to get the appointment, prior to being seen. She indicated this would go toward my bill. It acted as a deposit and in case I did not fulfill the appointment time. I do not have dental insurance but do have income to support my appointments. I was shocked at this requirement and moved on to another dentist that did not require a prepayment - deposit just to be seen. I realize some people do not meet their appointments but I am not that person. Perhaps $25 like many medical entities but was shocked at this requirement. This will not be my dentist.

Nicest healthcare professional I've ever had the pleasure of dealing with. You can't go wrong choosing this dental practitioner for any of your dental needs. She's knowledgeable, understanding, and she treats her patients with a kindness and a heart rarely seen among people in general in my experience. A+

This creates a recipe for what I call Disaster Mouth (pairs perfectly with Disaster Body if you also avoid the doctor). Needless to say, I was embarrassed and nervous before I finally made an appointment, but as soon as I walked into the office, all my trepidation and worry melted away at the warm and caring environment I was welcomed into. My awkward jokes were received with laughs as opposed to the usual blank stares I get, which was nice. The environment feels a lot more like you are visiting with good friends who just happen to really care about your teeth. Miss Debbie, who cleaned my teeth, made me feel more like I was at the spa getting a facial, only for my teeth. Tiny, little teeth facials, if you can imagine. Dr. Hartwig explained what was going on with my teeth due to years of maintaining a diet of mostly cake and candy, and gave me hope that my teeth wouldn't yet fall out of my head now that we have an action plan and a consistent maintenance schedule. At the end of my visit, I did not have to peel myself off of the chair due to me losing my body weight in sweat from the pain and anxiety I have experienced with previous dentists and hygienists. I was relaxed, happy, and dry as a bone. I went back the following week for some fillings, and the experience was just as pleasant as the first one, even though there were scarier instruments involved. Typically, even a minimal amount of pain is expected when receiving a giant needle to the gums, even with the most skilled hands, and I was prepared for that, but Dr. Hartwig performed some type of magic in which I did not feel any pain, whatsoever; not even a pinch! She was able to quickly drill and fill not just one but two of my teeth, with no pain or discomfort at any given point. Dr. Hartwig and her staff are nothing short of miracle workers in every capacity; they have managed to minimize the stress that often accompanies visits to the dentist, and have transformed it into a fun, pleasant event that makes you feel like you're winning at adulting. I've stopped eating cake for (most) dinners, and am so grateful to have found Dr. Hartwig and her staff, and look forward to my next and every visit with this amazing team.

I originally switched to this dentistry because they accepted my insurance (unlike the dentist near my house). I figured it would save me money to go somewhere in-network. What raised a red flag for me was that as soon as I switched, I was suddenly told I needed a crown and had a cavity--despite being told everything looked great just six months earlier at my previous dentist. I'm not a dentist, so I trusted their x-rays and advice, and went ahead with the work. Here's the problem: my mouth felt perfectly fine before the procedures. Afterward, I experienced pain and sensitivity that lasted an entire year. I couldn't eat on one side of my mouth--hot, cold, spicy, it didn't matter. When I brought this up at my 6-month checkup, I was told it was "normal" to have sensitivity after that type of work. But after a full year with no relief, they attempted to file down the tooth. The assistant even mentioned I might eventually need a root canal (which they outsource). Sure enough, I woke up one day in extreme pain and had to go back to my old dentist. They were able to get me in immediately, did the root canal in-house, and since then I've been pain-free. I won't be back to Lake Joy Dental. I'm not claiming they push unnecessary treatments, but in my experience, the work I received here caused more harm than good. Even with insurance, the out-of-pocket cost was high, and I would rather pay more with my old dentist for excellent work than save a little and deal with long-term discomfort.
