Lo and behold the science center was super cheap to attend for two classes, and the exhibits are very engaging and fun! Anna, Bradley, and David, made our experience fun and exciting! I've done a lot of field trips, in 27 years of teaching, but this one is one of my absolute favorites! I feel like their spot is totally slept on and underrated, we need to usher in more educators to take their kids here for their field trips! They're a non-profit and need our help to stay open! For example, feast your eyes on the new-ish Shrem museum, right on the edge of campus. New to Davis? This museum is directly across the street from UCD's visitor and conference center on one side, and the campus concert hall (wine-named Mondavi Center). High-tail it over to the museum and keep your wallet in your pocket -- it's free. It's 30 minutes or so you won't mind giving up. A fun mix of modern art that is always changing, so i won't date my review here. At the very least, it's a beautiful space with some thought-provoking installations every time I'm in town. I believe there's some kind of rule that all the artists have some connection to UC Davis. Davis hates cars, so the adjoining parking lot is about $10, during the week only. Weekends? Cars galore, no charge. Inspiring!

They have a small case for live/preserved bugs that you can hold, but if you come without ideas you might find it a little underwhelming with young ones. Ideal for kids who can safely hold a bug or glass jar without dropping or shaking. The staff is kind and knowledgeable. The room is small, you may like a mask on hand. They have a gift shop area and they have bug nets you can borrow.

They also boast the second largest mosquito collection -- shhh, don't tell Bill Gates! This was my second visit, this time with kids on a field trip. The collection is vast -- so extensive that they have installed rolling bookcases to house the specimens. Our 45 minute tour led us through some of the cases and then on to live specimens which included a giant millipede, hissing cockroaches, a scorpion, black widow, tarantula, walking sticks, and a leaf bug. Our group of little bookworms with ants in their pants was enchanted! The museum is open to visitors from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Wise people call first before they go to ensure the museum is available. While there is a small charge for tour led groups, the museum is free for general admission. But don't be a stink bug; put some money in the donation box.

The owner greeted our group and invited us to explore the museum following our event. Only negative was rather loud background noise of some sort, perhaps a central heating and cooling system? Located in central park in downtown Davis. Plenty of bike parking (duh!) and nearby un-metered street parking. A nice option for off-campus events.

Love, LOVE, LOVED this!! A friend and I were visiting for another event, but decided to book this…read morenight time tour afterwards. I saw an advertising online for this place, so it was perfect timing. When we walked in, we were greeted by 3 generations of lovely ladies. All really sweet and bubbly. We were told to pick out our favorite animal to ride and learned their funny nicknames. Then we were given the do's and don't for the ride. This was a night time tour, so we were able to experience the booming nightlife of downtown and ride by some local hotspots. I have been to Napa several times during the day time, but the night time happenings is sooo much better. The animal scooters were so much fun! Picture a bunch of adults acting like kids in a playground lol. Our tour guide even let us race them against each other. An hour and a half worth of shenanigans from the beginning to the end. It doesn't get any better than that. This place is a MUST do and a MUST go!!

I really enjoy spending time at the Yolo Wildlife Area. It's a great spot to walk around, clear…read moreyour head, and catch a sunrise or sunset. The open space and wetlands make it feel peaceful, and there's almost always some kind of wildlife to see. One of the coolest things is watching the bats fly out from under the causeway at dusk. It's such a simple but unforgettable experience. If you go during certain times of the year, you can also do guided wildlife talks and tours with the Yolo Basin Foundation, where you drive out in a caravan with walkie talkies throughout the wildlife area and share a lot of interesting information about the ecosystem. It adds a lot of context to what you're seeing. Even if you're not doing a tour, you can still go to the main entrance and explore on your own. It's just an all-around solid local spot to enjoy nature and slow down for a bit. Highly recommend :)

This wildlife area is right off the highway and has a decent length dirt wildlife road to check out…read morethe property. Lots of birds around, so bring binoculars and a scope if you have them. You do have to put up with some noise from the highway, but it's worth it if you're looking for birds like I was. I didn't see any visitor center or information signage around the property, but I may have missed some.
