The sidewalks felt open enough that I could wander around the Davie County Courthouse without anyone getting in my way. The soft light worked in my favor as the building's pale brick and classical detailing stood out cleanly, and I was able to photograph it without a single car or person drifting into the frame. The courthouse is a block from the very center of town and has that solid twentieth-century civic look, the kind of place build to project order and permanence. David County was formed in 1836, carved out of the western portion of Rowan County and it was named for William Richardson Davie, Revolutionary War officer, North Carolina governor and one of the state's most influential early political figures. Mocksville, the county seat from the beginning, takes its name from the Mock family, early settlers who owned land in the area long before the courthouse took shape. This current courthouse dates to 1909, a restrained Classical Revival design with brick walls, stone trim and a symmetrical facade that still reads as dignified more than a century later. Later additions expanded the footprint but the original brick remains the visual anchor. Walking the perimeter in the drizzle, you can see how the building as been adapted over time, but the core still carries that early-1900s courthouse personality. Tall windows, a centered entrance, and just enough ornamentation to remind you that this was meant to be the county's more important public building. it has handled the steady, everyday legal life of Davie County for generations, which in its own way makes it a satisfying stop if you like courthouse architecture and Mocksville makes it easy to linger a bit longer than you planned. Often, the…read moremarkers point to things that are blocks or miles away so it is great to see one that is right here! The marker reads, "William Rainey Holt, 1798-1868. Physician. Advocate of scientific agriculture. His plantation "Linwood" was 6 miles southwest. Built home here, 1834." Online, there is more information. "Dr. William Rainey Holt of Davidson County was among North Carolina's most versatile men of the nineteenth century. Born in Alamance County at the Holt homeplace (today the site is the Alamance County Historical Museum), William R. Holt was the brother of textile pioneer E. M. Holt and the uncle of Gov. Thomas Holt. Graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1817, Holt studied medicine in Philadelphia and soon after his marriage in 1822 set up practice in newly created Davidson County. Dr. Holt was among Lexington's first and leading citizens and purchased his home lot at an early courthouse sale. On that lot he constructed "The Homestead," a large Greek Revival house, in 1834, soon after his second marriage. That residence today is the oldest remaining home in the town. Holt, a Democrat and secessionist who lost three sons in the Civil War, had his house occupied by Union troops in 1865." The Civil War was 1861-1865 so his service is particularly noteworthy. "Jonathan Worth frequently disagreed with the Confederate administration but, despite his hatred of war, never became associated with peace movements. He supported the Conservative Party in 1862 and was elected state treasurer on December 3. At the close of the war he was asked by Governor William W. Holden to continue in that office as part of the provisional government. He resigned on November 15, 1865, to run against Holden for governor in the general election called by the convention that met earlier in the year. A combination of Worth's popularity and Holden's lack of it led to Worth's victory by nearly 6,000 votes." "The new governor faced major obstacles: quarreling factions within the state that needed to be reconciled; a president in Washington whose skepticism of North Carolina's sincerity had to be assuaged; and a hostile Congress demanding satisfaction from increasingly stringent rules and regulations. Worth enjoyed moderate success in the first two, but the last proved intractable. He had barely taken the oath of office for his second term when Congress passed the first of the Reconstruction Acts that imposed military rule upon the South." First and foremost, Spooky Woods only honors military discounts for active duty members, not their families. If your spouse is deployed or TDY, you cannot use your dependent ID to claim the advertised BOGO tickets. Additionally, the attraction does not recognize Gold Star families, which was especially disheartening after my friend--who lost her loved one in active duty--was also turned away. I strongly encourage management to reconsider this policy, as these families have made profound sacrifices and deserve recognition. We attended on opening night and waited approximately three hours in line. While some wait time is expected, better organization could greatly improve the experience. There were fun moments--music, light interaction, and themed characters--but compared to a competitor we visited the night before (which featured a full fall festival and concert guests could enjoy while waiting), the overall setup here felt less engaging and far less efficient. There was also a bar halfway through the line, but guests were not informed during ticketing that a green wristband was required to purchase drinks. After standing in line for hours, many people were understandably frustrated when they discovered this too late. Clearer communication would easily fix this issue. The "Bates Motel" and "Camp Crystal Lake" sets were the standout features in terms of design and atmosphere. However, the actor performances lacked coordination and consistency--several repeated the same handful of lines, and some of the scariest characters weren't even in their designated themed areas. One performer in particular, a female clown with black and white hair, blew an air horn directly into my mother's and my ears at close range, causing immediate ringing and a migraine that lingered for hours. That kind of proximity-based scare tactic poses legitimate safety concerns and should be addressed immediately. Furthermore, the terrain was uneven and poorly lit, with unexpected drops and steps that posed a hazard, especially for elderly guests. Adding proper signage, lighting, or a simple warning at the entrance would help prevent potential injuries. Overall, while there were moments of entertainment and strong visual effects, the experience did not align with the ticket price or expectations.

The bridge itself is beautiful and well maintained, showing only moderate signs of wear that add character rather than distraction . During our mid autumn visit, the waterway and surrounding landscape were bursting with color , making the views especially memorable. I later realized there was a walking trail close by that I missed, so that's something I'd definitely suggest checking out when you visit ‍. Parking isn't clearly marked or abundant ‍, but with a bit of patience, you'll manage just fine. Overall, it's a quiet, scenic spot that feels refreshingly untouched and worth the effort to find .

Fantastic little country roadside find! This historic bridge, one of the two remaining covered…read morebridges in the state of NC and designated a local/federal historical landmark, was built in 1911 at a whopping cost of $40. It was built to span the west fork of the Little River when horse & carriages were the main mode of transportation. There is a great little loop trail that circumvents this section of the Little River w/a little footbridge on the other side and a couple of off-shoots to go down to the water's edge and even rock hop to the middle (do so at your own risk ). Fantastic hues at Golden Hour and the soothing sound of the babbling waters make you quickly forget civilization is right there. I had the place to myself when I went, so the solitude was welcome. Definitely worth a visit when the weather is as gorgeous as it has been!

The guild has a very full store, with numerous artists represented & a gallery space for showings. I managed to stroll in 10 minutes before they closed and Penny didn't make me feel rushed at all. She happily directed us to the gallery portion and then I hunted through the store to find a little art treasure to take home. I love whimsical art & fell in love with one artists works in the store! Penny took down my email and sent me information on the potter, so that we could connect! Talk about above and beyond. I love the commitment to the arts- connecting artists is so important to the craft. I appreciate that they had items for all budgets, too. This was definitely a favorite stop and I look forward to returning in March and popping in again!
