SCAM ALERT! Do not use David Smith Custom Builders. We paid him a big deposit up front for a deck job back in July. He tore down our old deck down, and only did maybe 1/4 of the job. Still waiting on stairs, decking, a roof, screens, railing etc. Came back in September asking for more money to get the "rest of the supplies" so he could finish the job and then we never saw him again. Our family is devastated and can't move forward with the money he stole from us. He left us with nearly a 9 foot drop off out of our kitchen door and we have young children. And now he has filed bankruptcy!!! We have learned he has done this to DOZENS of people in Jasper, Kimberly, Montgomery, Tuscaloosa, Hoover, Alabaster and Pelham. Search his name on Facebook and you will find a post of all the horror stories. I don't want anyone else to lose money and deal with the stress we have dealt with. I used David Smith back in 2015, for just remodeling a small bathroom. He was Johnny on the spot for the gutting part, but after that, I was constantly having to call him to inquire when the remodeling would start. He kept telling me that his guys were on different jobs but just as soon as he could turn a couple loose, they'd be over to get started. This went on for over a month (after they had already gutted this SMALL bathroom). I even went as far as going myself and buying all the material (which he didn't take off the bill). Everyday I would come home from work, go straight to that bathroom, hoping for some sign of something starting. I'd ask my son, "did any workers come today?" Sometimes he'd say, "one guy came, but he was only here for about 30 to 45 minutes, left and said he'd be back, but he didn't." My husband, who works 12 hour days (not counting his driving time) plus two Saturdays a month as maintenance at a steel company, would come in DOG TIRED and do some of the work himself (David didn't take that work off his bill either). I went and purchased the ceramic tile for the floor and guess who laid them? My husband. He borrowed a tile saw from a friend. So in all, after I went myself bought all the materials, and after my husband done part of the work, the bathroom was finished in almost 4 months and David charged me over $4000.00. Believe me, he knows that I can't stand him. Anytime I'd see him out, I'd stare a hole through him. He'd drop or turn his head. Honestly, I wouldn't hire him to build a dog house now. I would leave 0 stars if possible. David Smith is a very dishonest man that took our money, strung us along for 15 months with lie after lie, and never completed our job. We would never recommend him to anyone after what we experienced. It's been a horrible nightmare. read more

David has been paid for a month and has been to the property to build maybe 2 times. His "crew" shows up the same amount of times,, at 10:30, then stops at 12 for lunch. Then leave at 2. In the month, they have completed posts and holes. When reaching out to Mr Smith, he assured that it would be done the week after Thanksgiving. Here we are at December 13, no fence and no one out working on it. I would not recommend him nor would I hire him again. read more

1 star isn't low enough. An absolute crook. Took half payment (thousands of dollars) for a remodel, everything gets demo'd, then started complaining about not being able to find workers, personal problems, etc. strung out the absolutely no progress on the job for 6 months. In the end, had to line up contractors ourselves and pay them out of our pocket just to get movement on the project so we could actually have a living space, which cost thousands more than the payment would have been to him for each phase, since he had half the money up front. Never paid the difference back that we were paying above contract for the services we had to line up. Now it ends with a bankruptcy notification from him and an unfinished project. So many people have reached out with the same story. Really tried with him to get updates, to get support, tried to be patient and flexible. Just didn't end well. Never again. read more
